About this product Product Information It takes a certain kind of person to stand out from other mixed martial arts fighters as both a wild man and a rock star. Chris Leben, otherwise known as "The Crippler," is that kind of person. His reputation started on the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fightera reality show where hopeful fighters vie for a UFC contract and a path to greatness. The world saw an out-of-control brawler with a penchant for destruction. But that was only half the story. From the slums of northwest Oregon, Leben has spent a lifetime coping with deep scars left by an absent father and ever-present struggles with alcoholism and drug abuse. He's been in jail eleven times, including for going AWOL. During his ten-year career in ultimate fighting, Leben became one of the most recognized figures in the sport, enthralling audiences around the world with his wild, headfirst style of fighting as he took on some of the world's best fighters, including Anderson Silva, Yoshihiro Akiyama, and Wanderlei Silva. The Crippler is not just an exciting account of his rise to prominence within the UFC; it's the incredible story of a renowned wild man dealing with his personal demons and learning that the toughest opponent is always yourself. Additional Product Features Dewey Edition. People everywhere ask me to tell them my now infamous stories. But Chris Leben took 'infamous' to a whole different level! This book is hilarious, heartfelt, and powerful. I love it! Chris holds nothing back, and his brutal honesty makes it hard to put this book down. Many readers, even those outside the MMA fanbase, will find this personal account of a flawed fighter meaningful. This book is well deserving of all five possible stars. In very short order, the reader will find themselves hearing Leben's raspy voice in their head as they read. Leben's memoir is a good read. It's Chris Leben, warts and all. • Cultivating Identity and the Music of Ultimate Fighting
CULIVATING IDENTITY AND THE MUSIC OF ULTIMATE FIGHTING Luke R Davis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2012 Committee: Megan Rancier, Advisor Kara Attrep © 2012 Luke R Davis All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Megan Rancier, Advisor In this project, I studied the music used in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events and connect it to greater themes and aspects of social study. By examining the events of the UFC and how music is used, I focussed primarily on three issues that create a multi-layered understanding of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters and the cultivation of identity. First, I examined ideas of identity formation and cultivation. Since each fighter in UFC events enters his fight to a specific, and self-chosen, musical piece, different aspects of identity including race, political views, gender ideologies, and class are outwardly projected to fans and other fighters with the choice of entrance music. This type of musical representation of identity has been discussed (although not always in relation to sports) in works by past scholars (Kun, 2005; Hamera, 2005; Garrett, 2008; Burton, 2010; Mcleod, 2011). Second, after establishing a deeper sense of socio-cultural fighter identity through entrance music, this project examined ideas of nationalism within the UFC. Although traces of nationalism fall within the purview of entrance music and identity, the UFC aids in the nationalistic representations of their fighters by utilizing different tactics of marketing and fighter branding. Lastly, this project built upon the above- mentioned issues of identity and nationality to appropriately discuss aspects of how the UFC attempts to depict fighter character to create a “good vs.

For Immediate Release: July 1, 2008 ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP® UFC 89: BISPING vs. LEBEN MICHAEL "THE COUNT" BISPING vs. CHRIS "THE CRIPPLER" LEBEN LIVE FROM THE NATIONAL INDOOR ARENA, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND SATURDAY, OCT. 18, 2008 London, England (UK) - The Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization will storm into the British Midlands for the first time when UFC 89: BISPING vs. LEBEN touches down at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, on October 18. In a middleweight showdown, which has set mixed martial arts fans ablaze with anticipation, England’s own Michael ‘the Count’ Bisping will finally collide with Chris ‘the Crippler’ Leben. Two of the most explosively exciting strikers in the 185lbs division, Bisping and American Leben were originally set to face off in London at UFC 85 in June but, now, are set to do battle in Britain’s Second City. “This is one of the most exciting fights we could have made in the middleweight division,” said UFC President Dana White. “Bisping has looked a monster since dropping down to 185lbs, and he’s dominated Charles McCarthy and Jason Day inside a round already this year. And Leben is coming into UFC 89 with a ton of momentum, too, having just knocked out Terry Martin and Alessio Sakara; two of the biggest wins of his career.” White added, “That these two guys were willing to fight each other in London with six weeks’ notice shows you the kind of warriors they are. But now we will see this fight probably as it should have always happened, with both guys getting plenty of notice and coming in 100% ready for each other.” Tickets for UFC 89: BISPING vs.
