  • The Confusion of Conditions a Sociological Look at the Television Series E.R.*
The Confusion of Conditions A Sociological Look at the Television Series E.R.* By Sabine Chalvon-Demersay Translated from the French by Teresa Lavender Fagan E.R. is an American television series that portrays the daily activities of a medical team in the emergency room of a hospital located in Chicago. The pilot episode was broadcast on NBC in September 1994. The series was bought by France 2, which aired the first episodes in July 1996, and has presented a new season every fall. Michael Crichton created E.R. He wrote the pilot episode, which was produced by John Wells and directed by Rod Holcomb; he continues to supervise the writing of subsequent episodes which are directed by different people. A graduate of Harvard, the author of 22 best-selling books, he has a medical degree, but has never practiced medicine. It was during medical school that Crichton thought of the original screenplay for E.R., which was produced twenty years later. He needed the authority that was granted to him by the success of his books and his film scripts (notably Disclosure, Jurassic Park, Congo, Rising Sun), as well as the support of Steven Spielberg, in order to be in a position to propose an original screenplay that in many respects went against much of what people expected in a television series, and concerning which he was not willing to make any concessions. The Research What is most striking when one questions viewers of the series is their sense of a true powerful relationship that is immediately established between the series and its audience and which develops throughout the seasons: violent rejection, strong enthusiasm, disgust, expectation, impatience, frustration, irritation, habit, weariness, (relief).

  • Behavioral Science
BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE Bipolar I is characterized by manic and depressive episodes but could be by a manic episode alone. Bipolar II is hypomania and depression .. never manic Id says: "I want it!" Superego says: "you know you can't have it!" Ego is the mediator between the two and deals with the conflict. - the ego id and superego operates on an unconscious level. the id is all your instincts ,the things that you would do if you did not have a super ego who will say stop so the super ego is ALL THE MORAL VALUES THAT A PERSON WILL HAVE LIKE IF YOU WANT TO STEAL SOMETHING (ID)THE SUPEREGO WILL SAY NO IT IS BAD (IT IS NOT MORAL) The ego links both of them. The ego controls the expression of the id so it can adapt to the external world. Hardy-Weinberg Law -------------------- Developed in 1908, the Hardy-Weinberg law is an algebraic formula to estimate the frequency of a dominant or recessive gene in a population based on the frequency with which the trait or condition is found in that population. The derivation takes several steps, but the final formula is... p2 + 2pq + q2 ...in which... § p = frequency of the dominant allele in a population § q = frequency of the recessive allele in the population, and § p + q = 1 Using the frequency for a condition known to be inherited in either an autosomal- recessive or autosomal-dominant manner, the frequency of the genes involved can be assessed. This can be important information in designing and delivering programs to screen for specific mutant genes in targeted populations.

A co-commission of Park Avenue Armory and Manchester International Festival, the critically acclaimed production was originally mounted in Manchester in July 2013, and will be re-imagined for the Armory presentation. Branagh, in his highly anticipated New York stage debut, will star as Macbeth alongside Alex Kingston as Lady Macbeth. Kingston’s appearance will also mark the first time she has performed on a New York stage. Additional casting and performance dates will be announced in the coming months. Branagh is lauded as one of the world’s leading Shakespearean interpreters on both stage and film and this production marked his return to Shakespeare after more than a decade. “The Armory enables artists to realize site-specific works that demand presentation space beyond limitations found in traditional theaters or museums,” said Rebecca Robertson, President and Executive Producer of Park Avenue Armory. “We are ecstatic to collaborate with Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, combining their incredible vision with our unconventional space and military history to allow audiences to relive this timeless story in a remarkable new way.” “We are thrilled that Kenneth Branagh will be coming to the Armory to recreate this iconic role following his performance in Manchester this summer,” said Alex Poots, Artistic Director of Park Avenue Armory and Manchester International Festival.
