Dear Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation Supporter,

$3,203,730: That’s how much money we raised last year – thanks to you! – to fund the first-ever Vision for Student Success programs.

During 2013-2014, SMMEF laid the groundwork for a robust, diversified portfolio of sustainable support from individuals (parents and community members), corporations and businesses, foundations and organizations, and events. We worked closely with school and PTA leaders to communicate this new model of fundraising for our schools. In a year of “double fundraising” – meaning, PTAs were still raising money for current year staff and programs while SMMEF was raising money for similar programs a year in advance – we were thrilled that we raised 80% of our goal.

Here are some fun facts about our campaign: • 2,955 people donated to our campaign. That’s 500% more donors than in 2012-13!

• Of those 2,955 people, 1,956 were first-time donors.

• Of the $3.2 million raised, 57% came from community members, 27% from parents, 7% from corporations and businesses, 6% from foundations and organizations and 3% from other.

• Two schools had 100% participation!

The best fact of all, however, is that YOU supported our campaign, which means you have made a direct impact on the education of our children.

On February 20, 2014, the SMMUSD Board of Education voted to allocate $800,000 to our campaign so that the first year of Vision for Student Success programs could be fully implemented in 2014-15. We will keep you updated on the Vision for Student Success programs and how they are positively impacting our schools and making our School District even stronger.

Inaugural Community Fundraising Event Raised $123,400

On Sunday, April 27, 2014, 1,500 Santa Monica and Malibu community members partied at Pacific Park on the historic Santa Monica Pier in support of SMMEF. Pier Party activities included rides, games, a live DJ, the Sposato Brothers from Malibu High, touch tanks from the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, a Santa Monica Police Motorcycle officer, a mime, a magician, arts and crafts run by P.S. Arts, a live auction, and exciting raffle baskets. Income for the event came from ticket sales, a live auction, raffle baskets, and 29 amazing sponsors. The Pier Party VIP component took place in Pacific Park’s Pavilion and featured 13 of the area’s finest restaurants: Blue Plate Taco, Caffe Luxxe, Chinois on Main, Del Frisco’s Grille, FIG, Hostaria del Piccolo, Hotel Erwin, JiRaffe, Joe’s/Bar Pintxo, The Lobster, Michael’s, Pier Burger, and Wilshire. Community leaders, including Superintendent Sandra Lyon, Santa Monica City Councilmember Tony Vazquez, Assembly Member Richard Bloom, and SMMUSD School Board members Maria Leon-Vazquez, Ralph Mechur and Nimish Patel were there to meet and greet Party-goers at the rides and games. With over 100 volunteers, Pier Party was a successful event and a wonderful example of the entire community coming together to support our students and schools.

SMMEF has developed a broad funding base to diversify our sources of support for District programs. In addition to annual fund donors, SMMEF strives to grow our endowments so that more annual programs can be funded from endowment income.

Endowments provide a legacy of support for important programs at schools. Thanks to generous donors, whose funding provides ongoing income, SMMEF has four major endowments: The For Academics Endowment, established in 1998, was valued at $1,625,667 as of June 30, 2014. The interest income of $67,000 was contributed to SMMEF’s Vision for Student Success campaign. The For The Arts Endowment, created in 2003, was valued at $2,916,691 as of June 30, 2014. $97,680 was used to fund arts programs at middle and high schools. The Peggy Bergmann Arts Endowment Fund, In Memory of Lenore Bergmann and John Elmer Bergmann, was created in February 2013 and was valued at $2,864,265 as of June 30, 2014. Income from this endowment pays for instruments and semi-private music lessons for socio-economically disadvantaged students District-wide, starting in the 2014-15 school year. SMMEF continues to build its For Athletics Endowment. Our endowments provide an ongoing and reliable source of funding that ensures consistent programming across the District. Growth of the endowments through donations and investment gains ensures SMMEF can provide students with outstanding programs. When you contribute to an endowment, you create a legacy of support for our students and schools.
