2 THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP

• The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is the world’s premier international jockeys’ team competition. Three world-class riders will represent each of Great Britain (GBR), Ireland (IRE), Europe (EUR) and the Rest of the World (ROW).

• The six races are limited to 10 runners with either two or three horses racing for each team (this will balance itself out over the course of the afternoon), and points are awarded on a 15, 10, 7, 5, 3 basis to the first five horses home (non runners score 4 points). Subject to full fields, each jockey has five rides and the team with the highest total after the sixth race lifts the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.

• All six races are handicaps and all will be run with identical prize money - £30,000 per race.

• Owners have a fantastic opportunity on Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Day - there are no entry fees for the races, there is prize money down to last place (with reserves that miss out on a run paid £500 travel money) and there is complimentary hospitality throughout the day.

• Dubai Duty Free has been associated with the Shergar Cup since its inception, initially as team sponsor of the Rest of the World team and as a race sponsor. In 2006, the company became title sponsor of the whole event for the first time.

• Captain for the GBR Team is reigning British jockey , who will be making his Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup debut. He will be joined by Hayley Turner , riding in her fifth Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and only the second female jockey to ride a Group One winner in Britain, following her success on Dream Ahead in the Darley at Newmarket last month. The third member of the GBR team is Ascot-born Jim Crowley , riding in his second Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and triumphant at this year’s Royal Ascot in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes on Prohibit.

• Captain for the IRE Team is , twice a winner of the Silver Saddle at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. Hughes will ride alongside last year’s Silver Saddle victor Fran Berry , who is among a select group of jockeys to partner winners at both the Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot, as well as this season’s -winning jockey Colm O’Donoghue , who qualified for an invitation by winning that Dubai Duty Free-sponsored race.

• Captain for the EUR Team is , fresh from riding his 100th Group One winner on the mighty mare in Sunday’s Prix Rothschild at Deauville. Peslier will be joined by fellow Frenchman Christophe Lemaire , who has a formidable record in Group One contests on his visits to Britain. The third member of the EUR team is Italian ace Mirco Demuro , who will be riding in his third Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and enjoyed the biggest success of his career in this year’s Dubai World Cup on .

• Captain for the ROW Team is South African Doug Whyte , who was recently crowned champion jockey in for the 11th consecutive season. His teammates are legendary Japanese jockey , who has rewritten the record books in his homeland, and Australian Hugh Bowman , who collected the Silver Saddle for leading rider in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup in 2007.

• The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is being run for the 11th time at Ascot. The Shergar Cup first took place at Ascot in 2000 when it was staged as an owners’ competition. It became a jockeys’ competition in 2001 and has gone from strength to strength ever since, attracting bumper crowds year after year. The one year it did not take place was 2005 when the racecourse was being redeveloped.

• Following a successful introduction in 2010, the jockeys competing in the four-team Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will again wear full team colours at this year’s renewal, although the design has been changed from last year. The three jockeys riding for the Great Britain team will wear red and white colours, the jockeys representing Ireland will wear green and white, the jockeys riding for Europe will wear blue and white and the Rest of the World team will wear black and white. Please see the jockeys’ biographies section (pages 10 -13) for further information on team colours.

• Back by popular demand, a two-hour live 1980s concert will take place in the old paddock after racing. The line-up consists of Jason , Kid Creole and the Coconuts , Jimmy Somerville , Paul Young , Toyah , China Crisis , Odyssey , Altered Images , Brother Beyond and Visage .

5 POST RACING CONCERT – “HERE & NOW” THE VERY BEST OF THE 1980S

Racegoers can look forward to another toe-tapping nostalgia trip following Saturday’s tremendous card when, for the fourth successive year, “Here & Now” - the Very Best of the 1980s will play a two-hour concert.

Jason Donovan sprang to fame during the 1980s as Scott Robinson in Australian soap Neighbours before hitting the UK charts at the end of that decade with a string of hits written and produced by the mega pop moguls of the time, Stock, Aitken and Waterman. His debut single Nothing Can Divide Us reached number five in the UK in 1988 and the follow-up proved a huge success. Paired with Neighbours co-star and sweetheart Kylie Minogue, he enjoyed his initial chart-topping hit with Especially For You. That was the first of three number one hits in a row as he topped the pops in 1989 with Too Many Broken Hearts and Sealed With A Kiss . In 1991 he took the lead of Joseph in the West End restaging of Joseph And His Technicolour Dreamcoat and the show gave him a third solo number one hit, Any Dream Will Do. He has enjoyed 10 Top 10 chart hits and a number one solo album.

Kid Creole and the Coconuts is fronted by the band’s founder August Darnell. Inspired by big band and incorporating Latin American and Caribbean influences, the group enjoyed its biggest success in 1982 with three UK chart top 10 hits taken from the Tropical Gangsters album. The group’s most recognisable tune and biggest hit is Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy which climbed to the number two spot. The band’s new album, I Wake Up Screaming, is due for release in September.

Jimmy Somerville co-founded Bronski Beat in 1983 and the synth-pop band enjoyed its biggest chart success with Smalltown Boy which reached number three in the UK. The Scottish falsetto left Bronksi Beat in 1985 and formed The Communards with keyboard player Richard Coles. The band had a huge smash with Don’t Leave Me This Way , which spent four weeks at number one and was the UK’s biggest selling single of 1986.

Paul Young famously sang the opening and closing lines of the iconic 1984 Band Aid single, Do They Know It’s Christmas Time, such was his star status during the mid-1980s. The former Streetband and Q-Tips front man enjoyed massive solo success with hits such as 1983 UK chart topper Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home) , Come Back And Stay and Love Of The People . But his biggest global hit came in 1985 with US number one Everytime You Go Away .

Toyah started her showbusiness career as a teenage actress and has continued to forge her music and acting careers in tandem. Acting provided the springboard to launching her first band, Toyah, in 1977. Famed for her outlandish garb and bright orange hair, Toyah was named Smash hits’ “Best Female Singer” and “Most Fanciable Female Singer” of 1981 following chart hits that year with It’s A Mystery , I Want To Be Free and Thunder In The Mountains.

China Crisis hit the UK top 10 in 1984 with their biggest hit Wishful Thinking . The Merseyside band, formed in 1979, released six albums and achieved 10 UK hit singles between 1982 and 1987. The band has played regular gigs since reforming for its 25th anniversary tour in 2007.

Odyssey formed in New York in the 1970s and the dance band is best known for the instantly recognisable 1977 hit Native New Yorker , which reached number five in the UK singles chart. The group enjoyed a number one hit with the 1980 single Use It Up And Wear It , while Inside Out made it to number three in 1982.

Altered Images was one of the seminal new wave bands of the early 1980s and the group enjoyed its biggest chart success with Happy Birthday , which peaked at number two in the UK. The Scottish band, fronted by the quirky and energetic Clare Grogan, was named as Best New Group at that year’s NME Awards. Further top ten 10 hits followed with I Could Be Happy and Don’t Talk To Me About Love .

Brother Beyond enjoyed commercial acclaim in the late 1980s after collaborating with Stock, Aitken and Waterman to produce The Harder I Try . That 1988 number two hit single was the band’s biggest success but a further top 10 entry followed later that year with He Aint No Competition .

Visage originally consisted of lead singer Steve Strange, Rusty Egan and Ultravox’s Midge Ure and Strange continues to front the band that was in the vanguard of the new wave movement. The band’s second release, Fade To Grey , was a massive hit in 1981 and made the UK top 10 as well as number one around Europe. Further chart success followed with the singles The Damned Don’t Cry and Night Train before the group disbanded in 1984. Strange recreated Visage after performing on the Hear And Now Xmas Tour in 2002.

The Shergar Cup

At stake for the winning team is the magnificent Shergar Cup, which depicts the mighty 1981 Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner. It was graciously provided by His Highness The Aga Khan, who owned Shergar.

Points will be awarded to the first five horses to finish in each of the six Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup races as follows - winner: 15 points; second: 10 points; third: 7 points; fourth: 5 points; fifth: 3 points. If there is a non- runner which cannot be replaced by a reserve, 4 points will be awarded both to the team and jockey missing out on the ride. The team with the most points after the six races have been run will receive the Shergar Cup at the closing ceremony.

If a dead-heat occurs in a race, the points for the two places are added together, divided by two and shared between the two jockeys/teams.

If there is a tie for the Team or Silver Saddle competitions, there will be a countback on the number of winners and the team/jockey with the most winners will be adjudged the winner overall; if they are still level, then 2nd places will be counted, then if necessary 3rd places, then if necessary 4th places. If they are still level, there will be joint winners.

The six races are worth a total of £180,000 in prize money, paid down to 10th (last) place in all six races. With no entry fees to pay and £50 in numbercloth sponsorship per runner, these are the only races run during the year in Britain when every owner represented by a runner should be guaranteed to, at the very least, cover their costs.

8 DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP RULES

The competition is an international jockeys’ tournament with 12 riders taking part, three jockeys riding for each of the four teams, Great Britain (GBR), Ireland (IRE), Europe (EUR) and Rest of the World (ROW). All horses entered are eligible to represent one of the four teams, regardless of ownership, and to be ridden by any of the jockeys participating in the competition.

The six races will be limited to 10 runners and two reserves.

Reserves must travel to Ascot on the day and can be substituted up until 45 minutes before their race. Reserves who do not run will be paid £500.

Entries must be made noon on Monday, August 1.

Declarations to run must be made at the 48-hour stage, by 10.00am on Thursday, August 4. The top 10 in the weights (including penalties) at the 48-hour declaration stage will run with those horses 11thand 12th in the weights acting as reserves.

DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP 'DRAW' PROCEDURE

The British Horseracing Authority has granted special permission to the Ascot Racecourse Executive to stage a 'Draw' at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Thursday, August 4, at which jockeys from the four competing teams of Great Britain, Ireland, Europe and the Rest of the World will be allocated to horses.

ALLOCATION OF HORSES TO TEAMS AND JOCKEYS TO MOUNTS

1. In all races, the horses selected to run will be those with highest official BHA ratings.

2. Once the final fields are known on Thursday, August 4, the 10 runners in each race will be ranked from 1 to 10 by form experts/odds compilers from Ladbrokes, the Official Bookmaker to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. A complex formula has been created to ensure that each of the four teams – Great Britain, Ireland, Europe and Rest of the World - receives a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses and, further to that, that each of the three jockeys representing each team also gets a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses for his/her five rides.

3. Once the ranking process has been completed, the four team names will go into a ballot. The order in which they are randomly drawn will determine which set of horses is allocated to each team.

4. A second ballot will then take place. The three jockeys representing each team will be drawn at random to determine an order (e.g. Great Britain 1, Great Britain 2 & Great Britain 3) and will then be allocated to their rides according to the set formula.

5. The allocation of rides by this method will be final. Any trainer declaring a horse to run at the 48-hour declaration stage is deemed to have accepted these conditions.

6. All owners of participating horses agree that jockeys will wear the colours of the team which they represent as part an agreement with the Racehorse Owners Association. Jockeys riding for Great Britain will wear red and white colours; Ireland green and white colours; Europe blue and white colours; and the Rest of the World black and white colours.

9 REST OF THE WORLD TEAM

Doug Whyte - Captain Doug Whyte recently clinched an unprecedented 11th consecutive Hong Kong jockeys’ championship and with a total of over 1,300 victories in the former British colony, he is well clear of his nearest pursuers on the all-time winners’ list there. Whyte was born on November 15, 1971, in Durban, South Africa, where his father John was a leading jockey before retiring due to problems with his weight. John Whyte died when his son was nine and Doug attended the South African Jockeys’ Academy at Summerveld. He spent the first two years of his five-year apprenticeship with David Payne in Durban and the remainder with -based Gary Alexander. He rode nine winners when with Payne before dramatically increasing his tally with 244 winners during years four and five of his apprenticeship - beating the record of 205 set by Michael Roberts and securing two apprentices’ championships. After finishing second in the senior South African jockeys’ championship on five occasions, including a best ever seasonal tally of 279 winners, Whyte was offered a job in Hong Kong by contacts met on one of his racing stints in Singapore. In the 2000/2001 campaign he won a first Hong Kong title with 88 wins, was champion again in the 2001/2002 season with 77 successes and prize money totalling HK$63,514,400. He again took the title in 2002/03 with 88 successes and HK$67,565,325 in prize money. In the 2003/2004 season he was the first jockey to break the 100-winner mark in Hong Kong when registering 106 victories and earning HK$82,729,570. He was again champion jockey of Hong Kong in 2004/05 with 98 winners and HK$67,668,195 in earnings, while the 2005/06 season was his winning most yet, with 114 successes and HK$79,130,045 prize money. He has been crowned champion in each subsequent season and ranks the 2009/10 championship, when his 100 winners (HK$86,32.01) saw off the challenge of Brett Prebble, as his most satisfying. The latest campaign yielded 96 successes. He is the only jockey to have accrued over 1,000 winners in Hong Kong. Whyte had been due to partner the Ivan Allan-trained Indigenous in the 1999 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot but missed the ride after suffering acute appendicitis following his arrival in Britain. Whyte’s successes on Indigenous include the Group One Hong Kong Gold Cup and Hong Kong International Vase. Prior to that, he had finished third on South African champion London News in the 1997 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at the Royal Meeting. The South African-bred horse had earlier given him successes in the Queen’s Plate and the J & B Metropolitan Handicap, two Grade One events in South Africa, and the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Hong Kong. He participated in the 2002, 2003 and 2006 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cups and won twice in 2003, taking the Shergar Cup Sprint on Move It and the Shergar Cup Mile on Pentecost. Previous Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup wins (2): 2003 Pentecost; 2003 Move It

He has won at Group One level for 23 consecutive seasons. In 1991 he became the first Japanese rider to win a Pattern race overseas when taking the Grade Three Seneca Stakes on El Senor at Saratoga, USA, and was also the first Japanese jockey to win a Pattern race in Europe when landing the 1994 Prix du Moulin on Ski Paradise at Longchamp, , as well as the first to score in Britain, when winning the 2000 Darley July Cup at Newmarket on Agnes World. Take is an internationally renowned jockey who has travelled extensively and was based in California in 2000 and rode in France during the 2001 and 2002 seasons, before returning to his domestic base. He partnered the great in all of his races, including the 2005 Japanese Triple Crown. Take participated at the 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cups. He won his first race at Ascot in the 2007 competition, steering the Tony Martin-trained Leg Spinner to success in the Shergar Cup Stayers Handicap. In 2008, he rode Strike Up The Band to win the Shergar Cup Dash and Nan’s Joy to land the Shergar Cup Distaff, placing him second in that year’s Silver Saddle leading rider competition. On July 22, 2007, Take established a record in Japan when recording his 2,944th success at a (JRA) track, passing the record of 2,943 achieved by Yukio Okabe. On November 3, 2007, Take reached another milestone in his career when becoming the first JRA rider to record 3,000 victories. That win, on two-year-old Sky Beauty at Kyoto racecourse, was his 14,288th JRA ride and came 20 years and eight months after the jockey made his career debut. His numerous notable victories include three in the thanks to Special Week (1999), Deep Impact (2006) and Rose Kingdom (2010). Hugh Bowman Born on July 14, 1980, in rural Mudgee, , , Hugh Bowman first sat on a horse before he could walk. His parents, Jim and Mandy, moved the family to Dunedoo and he soon became the star of the local pony club, winning the best under 12 rider category at age seven. He took up because he was too small to play , and then, during school holidays, he started riding barrier trials at Gilgandra racetrack. His first winner came on Slats at the Wellington picnic races in October 1996, several months after his first ride aboard his father’s Go Campese at the Mungerie picnic races. Trainer Bill Aspros took him on as an apprentice in 1997 and Bowman won the Central Districts and Western Districts apprentice titles in the following two seasons. In 1999, Bowman moved on to trainer Ron Quinton and won the premiership apprentice championship with 68 winners, more than double the number of his nearest rival. Having established himself as one of Australia’s finest young riding talents, Bowman won the 2008-09 Sydney jockeys’ premiership and was awarded the inaugural Bart Cummings Medal that season. He has partnered over 1,200 winners to date with prize money totalling in excess of AUS$56 million. Bowman has notched 18 Group One wins in his career. The first such triumph was aboard Defier in the 2004 Doomben Cup and the most recent being Danleigh in the 2011 . Other top-class wins have come aboard , Samantha Miss, Red Oog, Lion Tamer, He’s No Pie Eater, Vitesse Dane, Court In Session, Cheeky Choice, Racing To Win, Dafodil and Erewhon. Leading trainer Gai Waterhouse was one of Bowman’s main backers following his arrival in Sydney, although his career in Australia was not without controversy. In 2002 he was handed a six-month ban after a positive test for cocaine. Bowman served his suspension by working on a cattle station in the Queensland outback, an experience he credits for giving him a fresh perspective on life. In 2004, he took a busman’s holiday and rode in Ireland, where he partnered one winner, the Kevin Prendergast-trained Premier Dane at Fairyhouse. A meeting with Mick Channon at the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney in January, 2007, led to Bowman being offered a position in by the West Ilsley-based trainer. Bowman’s British debut was aboard Rio Taffeta at Brighton on April 29 and he only had to wait until the following day for a winner when Emerald Wilderness won in a dead-heat at Wolverhampton. His first big-race victory in Britain came aboard Wise Dennis in the totesport.com Victoria Cup at Ascot. He went on to notch 33 wins before returning to Australia at the end of that August, including Hatta Fort’s victory in the Group Two at Newmarket. He also made his Shergar Cup debut that year as he captained the triumphant Rest of the World team that consisted of himself, Yutaka Take and . Bowman won the Silver Saddle as leading rider as he scored on Benandonner in the Shergar Cup Mile. He has returned for a second stint with Channon, having arrived back in England in mid-June and rode at Royal Ascot. He will return to Australia after the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. She started riding out for trainer Mark Polglase, who supplied her first winner, Generate, at Pontefract on June 4, 2000. She also attended the Northern Racing College, and then was apprenticed to Michael Bell in Newmarket. Turner became the first woman to be crowned champion apprentice when partnering 44 winners during the 2005 Flat (turf) season, sharing the title with Saleem Golam. Turner’s first and to date only Group One victory came in July, 2011 aboard Dream Ahead in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket. She is only the second woman to have ridden a Group One winner in Britain and the first to win one outright as Alex Greaves’ success came when her mount Ya Malak dead-heated with for the 1997 . REMEMBERING SHERGAR

Shergar’s name is etched in racing folklore as much for his headline-grabbing demise as for his exceptional performances on the racecourse, the most scintillating of those being his record-breaking victory in the 1981 Derby.

Famously kidnapped by the IRA following his retirement to stud, the Aga Khan’s colt was one of the finest Derby winners of the 20th century and without argument the best racehorse of his generation with a lofty rating of 140.

Trained by in Newmarket, Shergar won impressively on his first start as a two-year-old before finishing second to the more experienced Beldale Flutter on his only other outing in what is now the Racing Post Trophy.

Having been rated 31st among his peers in the 1980 , Shergar commenced his Classic season as a 33/1 ante-post chance for the Derby. Those odds tumbled after a 10-length victory in Sandown’s Classic Trial was followed by a 12-length demolition in the Chester Vase.

Shergar lined up at Epsom as the 10/11 favourite for Derby glory. He did not disappoint his supporters as he once again accelerated away from inferior rivals to register a stunning 10-length success - the widest winning margin in the long history of the premier Classic.

With the Epsom Classic in the bag, Shergar went to the Curragh and added the Irish Derby by four lengths before routing his elders by the same distance in Britain’s premier all-age middle-distance contest, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

The stage was set for an autumn hurrah in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp but in an unexpected twist, connections decided to take in the St Leger at Doncaster. The extended mile and three quarters of the world’s oldest Classic proved beyond Shergar’s stamina reserves and he could fare no better than fourth.

That defeat was to be Shergar’s final race. Valued at £10 million, the colt retired to the Aga Khan’s Ballymany Stud in Ireland but on February 8, 1983, hooded gunmen seized the stallion. A £2-million ransom was demanded and refused. Shergar’s fate remains a mystery.

DUBAI DUTY FREE CONTINUES TO LEAD THE FIELD

Dubai Duty Free continues to build on the strength of its success at the head of the international airport retail market with encouraging half year sales of US$698.2 million, an increase of 16.6% over the same period last year.

The positive sales figures signal an excellent prospect for the remainder of the year and coincide with the news that Dubai Duty Free has retained its position as the world's largest single airport retailer in terms of turnover for a third consecutive year.

Commenting on the figures, Colm McLoughlin, Dubai Duty Free's Executive Vice Chairman, said, 'We are delighted to have made such an excellent start and with our retail space set to grow by almost 50% with the opening of Concourse 3 at Dubai International airport next year, I am confident that our turnover figures will again set new records.'

Dubai Duty Free opened for business in December, 1983 and employs more than 4,000 staff, 52 of which were part of the original 100 . It is one of the great success stories of the UAE with a year-on-year sales growth and the introduction of a string of innovative sales-related promotions.

In consultation with HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, changes to the designation of some of its key figures were announced last month.

Mr McLoughlin has become Executive Vice Chairman with overall responsibility for the airport retail operation and its subsidiary businesses, while his deputy George Horan has been elevated to President of Dubai Duty Free, his role being taken up with the day-to-day running of the multi-award winning operation.

Salah Tahlak becomes Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications for Dubai Duty Free, and Sinead El Sibai, Vice President of Marketing.

'I am delighted to announce these changes in certain management titles and believe they are a necessary step in realigning our business with our growth plans for the future,' said Mr McLoughlin.

Horse racing has been part of the organisation's marketing mix since its inception, helping to create brand awareness and interest in Dubai as a centre of business, leisure and sporting excellence.

In addition to its title sponsorship of the Shergar Cup, Dubai Duty Free backs the 'Spring Trials' meeting at Newbury in April and the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival at the Curragh, before returning to the popular Berkshire course in support of its two-day fixture in September.

In Dubai, the company operates the Aviation Club Leisure Complex, which includes the Aviation Club, the Irish Village, the Centenary Club and the Dubai Tennis Stadium, home of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

In January this year, Dubai Duty Free signed a management agreement with the Jumeirah Group, one of the world's most brands, to run the five-star, 293 bedroom Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, which is located in the grounds of the Aviation Club and is due to open later this year. 16 New Designations at Dubai Duty Free

Colm McLoughlin becomes Executive Vice Chairman and Announces Further New Designations

On July 17 Colm McLoughlin announced, in consultation with H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, a change in his designation to Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, with overall responsibility for the airport retail operation and its subsidiary businesses.

Mr McLoughlin also announced that George Horan has been appointed President of Dubai Duty Free, with responsibility for the day-to-day running of the operation.

Further designation changes include the appointment of Mr Salah Tahlak as Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications for Dubai Duty Free, and Mr Ramesh Cidambi, appointed as Senior Vice President, IT and Logistics, Dubai Duty Free.

The following designation changes were also announced: Bernard Creed, appointed Vice President of Finance, Sean Staunton, Vice President of Operations, Saba Tahir, Vice President of Purchasing, Nic Bruwer, Vice President of Human Resources and Sinead El Sibai, Vice President of Marketing.

Commenting on the designation changes, Mr. McLoughlin said: “I am delighted to announce the changes in certain management titles and believe that they are a necessary step in realigning our business with our growth plans for the future.

“Dubai Duty Free will celebrate 28 years of operation in December this year and during that time the operation has grown to be the single largest airport retailer in the world.

“We are very excited about our future plans which in the short term will see our retail space grow by almost 50% with the opening of Concourse 3 at Dubai International next year. It is important that our management structure reflects these growth plans.”

Dubai Duty Free currently employs 4,000 staff, with 52 of the original 100 workforce still in active service. The operation announced sales of Dhs2.548 billion (US$698.2 million) for the first six months of 2011, representing a 16.6% increase over the same period last year.

Dubai Duty Free opened for business on December 20, 1983. Colm McLoughlin was one of a team of 10 from Aer Rianta (the Irish Airport Authority), which also included George Horan, who moved to Dubai in 1983 at the request of the Dubai Government to set up Dubai Duty Free.

Following the successful opening of Dubai Duty Free, Colm McLoughlin was asked to remain as General Manager of the start-up operation, later becoming Managing Director. George Horan also remained as Retail Manager, going on to become Deputy Managing Director.

Under Colm’s leadership, Dubai Duty Free rapidly grew and expanded throughout the 1980s and 1990s with year- on-year sales growth. The opening of Sheikh Rashid Terminal in 2000 brought with it the expansive 5,400 square metre retail operation and the resultant soaring in sales for the best part of the decade. The opening of Emirates Terminal 3 in October 2008 provided a further major expansion of the retail operation. Despite the economic downturn in 2009, Dubai Duty Free’s turnover continued to grow and reached US$1.14 billion in 2009. In 2010 sales topped a record US$1.27 billion and the operation has retained its No. 1 position as the single largest airport retailer in the world in terms of turnover for the third consecutive year.

Dubai Duty Free operates the Aviation Club Leisure Complex which includes the Aviation Club, The Irish Village, The Century Village and Dubai Tennis Stadium, the home of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. In January, 2011, the operation signed a management agreement with the Jumeirah Group to manage the five- star, 293-bedroom Jumeirah Creekside hotel, which Dubai Duty Free has developed. Located on the grounds of the Aviation Club, the Jumeirah Creekside is due to open later this year.
