The Satpura National Park takes its name from the Satpura hills that range across central India. It covers 524 sq.km of protected forests. In 1999, the Madhya Pradesh Government created the Biosphere Reserve, a protected region with an area of 1427 sq. km, covering three conservation units: (518 sq. kms.), Pachmarhi Wildlife Sanctuary (461 sq. kms.), and Satpura National Park (524 sq. kms.).

This Reserve has a designated core zone which is the Satpura National Park. The remaining area is described as the Buffer Zone—a sprawling 4501.91 sq. km area spread across the districts of Betul, and that is slowly being reclaimed by the jungle.

Location

The nearest rail head and airport is which is a 3.5 hrs. driving distance to the Lodge. Bhopal is well connected by flights and trains to all the major cities in India like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Forsyth Lodge is situated beside Sarangpur village, at the northern edge of the Satpura Reserve, opposite what is known as the Madai Entrance to the reserve. The Denwa, one of the tributaries of the Narmada, separates the reserve from human habitation.

Accessibility

 Proximity to Bhopal (just about 3 hrs 30 minutes) makes it a great option for a wildlife extension program for 3 to 4 nights.  Forsyth Lodge is an hour’s journey by road from Pipariya.  Junction, a station that straddles the North-South rail link, is again well-connected to several Indian cities. It is a 90-minute ride by road from Forsyth Lodge.  One could also connect it with the central India wildlife sanctuaries in the wild-life itineraries

The Lodge

Nestled in the midst of 44 acres of jungle at the end of the , Forsyth Lodge is the perfect gateway into verdant surroundings coupled with the allure of natural living. The focus lies in being able to deliver a wholesome, sustainable wildlife experience.

The lodge is a rammed-earth structure while the cottages are built out of cob. Both are ecologically responsible ways of building that blend with local architecture and go a long way towards moderating temperatures through the variations of summer and winter. This is but one of several ways in which the Lodge treads softly on the landscape while offering every necessary comfort.

The main building holds spacious dining areas, a well-appointed library devoted to Indian wildlife, a lounge, several fireplaces and the Forsyth Bar.

Accommodation: 12 Cottages

 Forsyth Lodge consists of 12 independent cottages built in an arc around the lodge building.  4 out of the 12 cottages come with Machhan terraces  The lodge is a two-storey building that opens out on to stunning vistas of the mountains while the cottages are built to offer unique vantage points into the landscape.

Our naturalists are trained birders who will point our feathery friends out and provide you interesting facts about them.

AMPHIBIAN ADVENTURE Amphibian Walks give you a chance to see these hidden gems and understand what part they play in the larger scheme of the ecosystem.

FORSYTH TRAIL In a truly imaginative move, the park management has opened the old pack- trail used by Capt. James Forsyth to walk up to Pachmarhi and have created a superbly scenic two-day hike. Capt. Forsyth was the first person to explore the Satpura landscape and write about it in his book the ‘Highlands of Central India’.

CELESTIAL STAR GAZING Huddle near a quiet and comfy bonfire, while our Naturalists point out constellations and retell beautiful stories, engaging you in the stories of Greek and Roman mythology. Kick back into a relaxed state of mind and you dwell at the astronomical wonders of our universe.

WANDERING WALKING TRAIL Walking around Forsyth, spread across 44 acres, letting the beauty of the ambience seep into you, creating a sense of introspective calm. Take in the panoramic views as you spend a morning or afternoon unlocking the scenic sights around you.

JUNIOR RANGER’S PROGRAM Watching wildlife requires a set of practical skills. Our naturalists also run a fun three-day course where children and interested adults acquire the basics of jungle craft—how to use equipment, how to identify species, and how to be quick-witted with a camera— and a certificate to boot.
