ESTIMATES AND ACTUALITY: COMPARATIVE COSTS OF BRITISH CROSS-CHANNEL AIRLINES, 1918-1924 ROBIN HIGHAMt The two articles that follow are published as an illus- tration of the tremendous strides that have been made in air transportation in the past forty-odd years. Contrast, if you will, the absence of concrete data and the extent of speculation detailed in Dr. Hig- ham's article on the problems of the fledgling British airlines' cross-channel operations, with the statistical detail available to air carriers engaged in international operations today as they plan for supersonic oper- ations. T IS not possible to be definitive about the costs of establishing British overseas airlines for the simple reason that most of the early statistics simply do not exist. Many were allowed to go by default, some companies' accounts are not available or have been lost, and at least one company's rec- ords were destroyed during World War II air raids. -
