Gelandesprung Gazette “Going Downhill Since 1969!” Gelandesprung Gazette “Going Downhill since 1969!” December 2020 www.gelandesprung.org P.O. Box 10422, Green Bay, WI 54307-0422 Life on Adam's Street Happy Holidays from the Gelandesprung Ski Club. It goes without saying that 2020 has been anything but usual and we are slowly but surely finding our way in these new times. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on something positive, namely you. As a valued member of the organization you represent the very core of our club existence. The Board and I are ever grateful for you, and say thank you for sticking with us amid the world around us. It goes without saying that it will be some time, perhaps summer, before we can function normally. The Board and I will continue to work to provide you ski options amid the ongoing crisis. It is our hope that although different than what you are accustomed to, you will feel comfortable and safe in joining us on the hill sometime soon. Thank you for being a member. Due to time constraints and a significant amount of new information to share, I will not be providing you a video as was originally intended. There has been rapidly changing information impacting our ski trips that I wish to outline for you here instead. We have found that each hill has developed their own way of handling operations, yet allows for a safe ski experience, which has us altering our ski trips. We have found that some hills are not accepting organized groups such as ours, are not providing discounted lift tickets, or if they do, the minimum is so high we would not reach it. Others are reducing hours and services available to skier’s, including not making snow. An example is that Brule will only be open Friday-Sunday. For these reasons, along with your safety in mind, the Board has discussed extensively and decided it is prudent to modify the rest of the upcoming ski season. We understand that these decisions will make a change in your plans for the ski season. It is our intent that by taking these actions, we minimize the risk of transmitting Covid-19. I will outline these items for you now. 1) All Gelandesprung Midwest trips are now drive-up only. There will no longer be bus transportation provided to any of our local trips. The club will do its best to share a list of interested skiers so that you may coordinate carpooling as you are comfortable. 2) New dates and locations have been created and posted in this issue of the newsletter. 3) Big Sky, MT ski trip has been postponed until 2022. 4) Winter Ski and Sport is willing to work with individual groups wishing to travel to Big Sky on their own. Please read further in this issue for more details. Or, information for this option will be posted on the website as the details are made available to us. Sly Fox Ski Club is making similar decisions about their trips. Make sure to check out their newsletter and website for more information. In conclusion, even Covid-19 will not stop us from going downhill. Even though skiing has its ups and downs this season, we will get through this together. Ski you later, Adam N. Hanson "Going Downhill since 1969" BIG SKY, MONTANA - POSTPONED UNTIL 2022 ___________________________________________________________________________ Following consultation with the Western Trip Committee, the Executive Board voted unanimously on November 24, to postpone the ski trip to Big Sky from March 2021 to early season in 2022. The exponential increase in the number of COVID-19 cases makes it clear that our trip in March could result in new cases that could have a significant impact on the health of our members. The Board regrets the need to make this unprecedented choice. Yet, the Board cannot support proceeding in this environment. Contractual obligations for payments that would be due to Winter Ski & Sports in early December are the primary driver for the timing of this decision. By making this decision now, you will have the opportunity to make your own plans. All cash submitted to Gelandesprung for this trip will be refunded to you as quickly as is feasible. Any checks that you have sent to Gelandesprung during the past week will also be returned to you. Myra Altschuler, Travel Protectors, will provide vouchers for the value of insurance if you purchased Option 2 or Option 3, for the trip. The vouchers will be good for two years and can be used for ski trips or for trips other than ski trips. If you purchased Option 1 ($25 pp.), you will receive a refund. You may contact Myra at [email protected] or (703) 443-9055. Finally, if you still want to go to Big Sky during the week of March 13, 2021, WS&S will provide information to us about an option for you to use their services to put together your own group. Gelandesprung will provide this information to you when it becomes available to us. Except for informing you of this option, Gelandesprung will not be involved in the trip. __________________________________________________________________________ PO Box 10422 Green Bay WI 54307-0422 www.Gelandesprung.org _--- GELANDESPRUNG SKI DAYS ---_ We have had to change our trip days & locations. Skiing – Alpine and Nordic Dale Murrish with some info from Dave Norkus & Darryl Ahlberg GM Ski Club Troy, Michigan 17 January 2013 Skiing – Alpine and Nordic • Commonly called downhill and cross-country • Two different sports – both outdoors in the snow – Snow: hate it or play in it? • Equipment for each type • Basic techniques • Local, Michigan and faraway destinations • GM Ski Club trips - www.gmskiclub.org, meets in Troy – Originally GM employees but open to everyone • Other GM Ski Club activities - see their website 17 Jan 2013 2 Alpine Skiing Equipment • Skis, boots, bindings, poles – Rent them at the resort or nearby shop before buying them – last year’s rental models may be a bargain • Warm coat, hat, mittens or gloves, helmet? • Dress in layers – several layers are better than a heavy coat. • Wear synthetics next to the skin to wick moisture to wool sweaters (insulates when wet). Acrylic sweaters are OK too. • Cotton absorbs moisture and should not be worn next to the skin; preferably not at all (blue jeans collect snow and should be covered if worn) • Ski pants or Gore-tex pants to cover layers • Goggles or sunglasses, face guard if really cold • Sunscreen, chapstick • Backpack for snacks or sack lunch – long lines and crowds in lodge • Camera 17 Jan 2013 3 Know the Area • Get a map of ski area and use it – Rope tows on bunny hills are hard on gloves and body – Some areas have moving sidewalks and chair lifts on easy runs – Graduate to chair lifts as soon as you can – Express chair lifts are faster – Gondolas allow you to be inside – in the mountains • Green, blue and black diamond difficulty depends on ski area and snow conditions – Don’t save last run of the day for a black diamond 17 Jan 2013 4 Alpine Technique • Start with snowplow, zig-zag downhill • Bend your knees, avoid trees! • Control with edges, think french fries (parallel skis), lift and turn, don’t cross tips! • Plant your left pole turn left – poles for balance and weight transfer, not for propulsion • Take a lesson! Well worth it.

Gelandesprung Gazette “Going Downhill since 1969!” November 2020 www.gelandesprung.org P.O. Box 10422, Green Bay, WI 54307-0422 Life on Adam's Street Hello and welcome to another page-turning edition of the Gelandesprung Gazette, your monthly newsletter. We are happy to have you and glad that you have come back around for another update. If that’s why you’re here, then definitely read on as I have some important news to share here in this section. The Board and I were extremely pleased with the turnout at our social gathering October 2 at The Woods. We have been blown away by the fact that we already have 63 registrations for our Big Sky Trip as well! You have demonstrated to us that you definitely want to gather and ski again. It is our intention to do that, to the best of our ability, keeping member safety in mind. Covid is putting a damper on our excitement and bringing us back to reality. Regardless of your viewpoints, the news says it every day, the numbers continue to rise and we are in a hot spot of the country. It was our initial hope to have in-person General Membership meetings this season. With statistics being what they are, it was a unanimous approval to make this season’s General Membership meetings virtual recordings. We will not gather in-person for meetings at all this ski season, up to, and possibly including, the Spring Banquet. Instead, watch your email for a video of what would have been presented at the normal General Membership meetings.
