Overleden: 2006 Emigreerde naar de USA in 1924, Amerikaans staatsburger Opleiding: University of Chicago, B.S. 1938. Carrière: zelfstandig schrijver en fotograaf sedert 1946 Militaire dienst: diende als luitenant in de U.S. Naval Reserve. Familie: getrouwd met Kathleen Stick, 1941; 2 dochters en 2 zonen Hamilton zei over zijn werk: "The themes [of crime/mystery fiction novels] are universal; only the presentation varies." (foto: Born) Detective: Matt Helm, geheimagent, codenaam "Eric", later privé-detective, Los Angeles Helm is een beroeps sluipmoordenaar voor een supergeheim regeringsbureau; tegelijkertijd is hij een doorsnee jongen, sportsman, patriot en een meedogenloze killer verpakt in één persoon, in feite een regerings-sluipmoordenaar. Hij werkte eerder in de Tweede Wereldoorlog als sluipmoordenaar achter de vijandelijke linies. Na de oorlog werd hij schrijver en professioneel fotograaf, maar werd teruggeroepen in overheidsdienst toen communistische agenten zijn jonge zoon dreigden te kidnappen. Hij redt zijn zoon, maar op zo'n brute, niets ontziende wijze dat zijn vrouw geschokt en doodsbang is geworden wanneer zij beseft met welk een monster zij getrouwd is. Zij verlaat hem en Helm keert terug naar zijn oude werk, nu voor een niet nader genoemde overheidsdienst, die geleid wordt door zijn voormalige militaire commandant, die alleen bekend staat onder de naam 'Mac', een man met grijs haar met een grijs pak. Maar Mac is punctueel in zijn taal en manieren, iets dat zijn werkelijke meedogenloosheid en bereidheid om zijn agenten er op 'zelfmoord missies' uit te sturen, logenstraft. Helm kan pragmatisch zijn als hij een fout maakt, een superpatriot, overdreven gevoelig als het over honden gaat en sentimenteel in de liefde. Helm doet wat hij zegt dat hij zal doen en als hij een opdracht krijgt om te doden, laat hij zich door niets weerhouden die order uit te voeren; voor hem betekent het "to make the touch", dwz zijn doel doden. Helm maakt duidelijk dat hij voor geen enkele prijs te koop is. Geld noch macht geven hem de bevrediging die zijn job hem geeft. Als hij met een vrouw in bed ligt, heeft dat wat er in bed gebeurt geen enkel effect op iets dat later zou kunnen gebeuren. Voor Helm is de ergste zonde niet het falen van de missie, maar het falen om zich als een professional te gedragen.     Hyperobjectifijaculation The Silencers (1966), Directed by Phil Karlson By Fearless Young Orphan Last time we discussed the ultimate cold war spy film, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, typically listed among the greatest spy films made to date. Let’s not let quality go to our heads. This time around, we’re going to dive headfirst into the polar opposite, which is such an overbearing farce that I’m not sure it should be mentioned by title in the same paragraph, for fear of offending the movie gods. Matt Helm is actually the secret agent from a series of espionage novels by Donald Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton’s books were of a serious nature, so who knows what he thought when the rights were purchased and the franchise turned into a sleazy sex-romp. I hope he was just pleased with the money; he did, after all, go on to write a couple dozen more books in the series. Released almost simultaneously with Our Man Flint in 1966, The Silencers represents the ugly extreme of James Bond spoofing. Three more films follow in the series: Murderer’s Row, The Ambushers, and The Wrecking Crew. I understand that this is the “best” of the four, but that’s sort of like saying “That was the best case of stomach flu I’ve ever suffered.” The Silencers is not clever enough to even be called a spoof in my opinion; I’d consider it closer to being a spy nerd’s dirty dream. Basically it takes any concept of actual secret agents and skips it for the sake of showing as many gorgeous women as it possibly can, in various states of undress.

As with the previous three Helm spy movies (The Silencers, Murderers' Row, and The Ambushers), it is based only loosely upon Donald Hamilton's 1960 novel of the same title and takes great liberties with the plot and characters, being developed as a spoof of the James Bond films. The Wrecking Crew was the second Helm novel published and the earliest of the books to be adapted.
