Operation is a GO!By Boxer Dog Lover in Vermont...Matt Helm is sent to Mexico to to rescue Sarah, a fellow US agent. Sarah is working in a bar called The Chihuahua. She gets knifed and mutters something to her sister, Gail, as she is dying.Matt meets up with Gail shortly afterwards and tries to find out what Sarah told her. Gail is best described as a real character!Supposedly, there will be an underground test at a facility which must be stopped. Gail and Matt take off in a snowstorm to stop this test. Gail turns out to be a double crosser which adds to the plot. There is some great humor in this book. I would describe it as off the wall so it really fit the characters.Any chance that Matt and Gail will end up together?Highly recommended.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great seriesBy Steve KayeHamilton was a very good writer of action stories -- in Westerns, mysteries, and here in spy thrillers. These are spare, not like today's bloated, endlessly introspective doorstop-sized books. Matt Helm is not James Bond ... in fact there is some effort to "de-bunk" the Bond image of spies. Helm is the antithesis of the cool, suave, sharply dressed, perfectly quaffed, impeccably equipped spy. Good action, good characters, lots of fun. Read 'em all. The first 8 are being reprinted. The first four are available now, a fifth to be published in August, and then 3 more published into 2014. Hopefully, the publisher will do the rest of the hard to get series.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great! Wish for a good film version.By Michael R. BowkerMatt Helm in novels is nothing at all like the Dean Martin films of the 60s. Now, I do actually enjoy watching them, but other than a few character names they have nothing to do with the books. That being said, the reprints and Kindle books of Donald Hamilton's spy novels are a fantastic chance to revisit these great works.Matt Helm is not the typical spy. He is a cold blooded assassin. His missions usually involve killing someone just because they are the enemy. If he happens to save the country in the process, so be it but his primary mission is to kill the bad guy.The Helm books are dated in their references. Helm, at least at the start of the series, is a WW2 veteran who worked at his profession during the war. Later on in the series these references were dropped since he would have been a bit too old to still be an agent. With these books you have a fairly straightforward premise that can often go off in unexpected paths. People who you get to know can wind up dead or may seem to be one thing and turn out to be something else. You never quite know. It isn't Le Carre or Fleming but pure Hamilton.Helm can be quite brutal. As a fan of various authors of espionage I think he comes out as one of the toughest. It really is great to have these books out again. I have old paperback copies that I collected over the years but they have a habit of falling apart while reading them. Having them available electronically is great. Portable and a space saver. When I think of Donald Hamilton's Matt Helm I always remember how I started reading them after seeing the films and enjoyed them so much more because they were so well done. If you know Helm and want to catch up,with an old friend or if you are a fan of action packed spy fiction I suggest you grab these books but savor every bite. Helm is sent to extract a female agent working as a stripper in a bar in Mexico. When she is killed before Helm can complete his mission to extract her, he finds himself teamed up with the woman's sister as he fights to save the lives of a group of scientists and American officials. Perhaps the most famous of the titles, due to the Dean Martin film of the same name, but where the movies were tongue-in-cheek, the novels are breathtakingly brutal. ''Donald Hamilton has brought to the spy novel the authentic hard realism of Dashiell Hammett; and his stories are as compelling, and probably as close to the sordid truth of espionage, as any now being told.'' --New York Times ''Top- ranking American secret agent fare...Good writing, slick plotting, and stimulating characters, all tartly flavored with wit.'' --Book WeekAbout the AuthorDonald Hamilton is the creator of Matt Helm, star of 27 novels that have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. He was born in Uppsala, Sweden, attended the University of Chicago, and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. His writing career began in 1946 with short stories for Collier's and The Saturday Evening Post. His first novel was Date With Darkness, published in 1947, and altogether he published 38 novels. The first Matt Helm novel, Death of a Citizen, was originally published in 1960, at the height of the Cold War. • Hyperobjectifijaculation
Hyperobjectifijaculation The Silencers (1966), Directed by Phil Karlson By Fearless Young Orphan Last time we discussed the ultimate cold war spy film, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, typically listed among the greatest spy films made to date. Let’s not let quality go to our heads. This time around, we’re going to dive headfirst into the polar opposite, which is such an overbearing farce that I’m not sure it should be mentioned by title in the same paragraph, for fear of offending the movie gods. Matt Helm is actually the secret agent from a series of espionage novels by Donald Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton’s books were of a serious nature, so who knows what he thought when the rights were purchased and the franchise turned into a sleazy sex-romp. I hope he was just pleased with the money; he did, after all, go on to write a couple dozen more books in the series. Released almost simultaneously with Our Man Flint in 1966, The Silencers represents the ugly extreme of James Bond spoofing. Three more films follow in the series: Murderer’s Row, The Ambushers, and The Wrecking Crew. I understand that this is the “best” of the four, but that’s sort of like saying “That was the best case of stomach flu I’ve ever suffered.” The Silencers is not clever enough to even be called a spoof in my opinion; I’d consider it closer to being a spy nerd’s dirty dream. Basically it takes any concept of actual secret agents and skips it for the sake of showing as many gorgeous women as it possibly can, in various states of undress.

© Copyright 2012 Walt Missingham ‘THE WRECKING CREW’ The Forgotten Bruce Lee Movie Written by Walt Missingham The Wrecking Crew, released in 1969 and starring Dean Martin, Elke Sommer, Nancy Kwan and Sharon Tate is the fourth and final film in a series of American comedy-spy-fi theatrical releases featuring Martin as secret agent Matt Helm. As with the previous three Helm spy movies (The Silencers, Murderers' Row, and The Ambushers), it is based only loosely upon Donald Hamilton's 1960 novel of the same title and takes great liberties with the plot and characters, being developed as a spoof of the James Bond films. The Wrecking Crew was the second Helm novel published and the earliest of the books to be adapted. This was the last film of Tate's to be released before her murder at the hands of Charles Manson's followers on August 9, 1969. © Copyright 2012 Walt Missingham Bruce Lee coaching Nancy Kwan and Sharon Tate Not known by many is that the film featured a virtual who’s who of American martial arts royalty with Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, Ed Parker and Bruce Lee all appearing in the film. Bruce Lee was engaged as the martial arts choreographer for the film and insisted on bringing in as many top martial arts exponents as he could. © Copyright 2012 Walt Missingham Joe Lewis squares off against Dean Martin As the film progressed it became obvious to Dean Martin as well as Producer Irving Allen and Director Phil Karlson that Lee’s skills and the martial arts in general should and would be an integral part of the next Mat Helm movie ‘The Ravagers’ Chuck Norris with Elke Summers and Dean Martin © Copyright 2012 Walt Missingham Bruce Lee was choreographer for the fight scenes but also doubled for Dean Martin in all the fights.

Flying Saucers, Secret Agents, Flying LessonsBy Dave WildeMatt Helm is an agent for a super-secret agency that operates in the shadows and does the tough work no one wants to admit needs doing. Not only does he have a license to kill, but he knows intimately that feelings and emotions have no place in this business and if you are too cautious and too moralistic that agent you only wounded might come back up firing at you. This one involves UFOs and strange ray guns and other mysterious sightings. It involves another espionage agency out to do Helm wrong. It involves his early nemesis the gorgeous Nayda. It takes the reader deep into Mexico and into the Sea of Cortez. Gritty, fast paced, unsentimental, and simply a damn good read.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.
