SUMMARY Introduction Dr. Mahdi Abdul Hadi welcomed the participants to the second meeting on The Future of the Palestinian National Identity. After summarizing the main ideas of Rashid Khaldi’s recent study on the Palestinian identity, he noted that while some scholars claim that the Palestinian identity began to evolve in the early 50’s, others insist on referring in this regard to the roots of the Arab National Movement and the early days of the Arab awakening, which occurred during the period of Ottoman rule. He added that the former group support their position by saying that during the early 50’s, the Arab countries in the region respected the decision of the Political Committee of the Arab League to maintain the Palestinian identity and therefore, with the exception of Jordan, did not grant citizenship to Palestinians. Dr. Mahdi Abdul Hadi referred to the previous roundtable meeting on the same issue by saying that the spirit of the aforementioned meeting had been dominated by self-critique and by the exposure of the psychological, cultural, and geographical gap between the West Bank and Gaza.

    ‘The People Are Missing’: Palestinians in Kuwait Mai Al-Nakib Kuwait University Abstract This paper explores the effects of the Iraqi invasion on the Palestinian community in Kuwait. Specifically, it considers Gilles Deleuze’s notion of the ‘missing people’ in relation both to the Palestinians deported after the 1991 Gulf War and to the majority of Kuwaitis who have not acknowledged the effects of this disappearance on either the Palestinians or themselves. The first section revisits the circumstances surrounding the deportation of approximately 380,000 Palestinians from Kuwait, while the second considers what was lost as a result. The final section proposes an ‘ethics of the missing’ as a possible means to engage and transform some of the ensuing problems. Keywords: Deleuze, Palestinians, Kuwait, ethics, missing people, virtual, becoming 1991 is the year the Palestinian community in Kuwait went missing. Of the 380,000–400,000 Palestinians that lived and worked in Kuwait before the Iraqi invasion, only about 70,000 remained by the end of the year (Lesch 2005: 172). The consequences of the Gulf War on Palestinians deported from Kuwait to Jordan, Gaza and the West Bank are ongoing (Le Troquer and al-Oudat 1999). While the economic and, to some extent, political effects of this event on Palestinians can be calculated, the psychological, social and cultural effects are harder to tabulate. Twenty-two years on, between 55,000 and 70,000 Palestinians remain in Kuwait. They maintain a low profile, understandable given their precarious legal, socio-political and economic status. XI · JUNE 2008 MESSAGE FROM the graND MASTER The encouraging changes I observed included the continued strengthe- ning of Christian institutions, especially schools, which serve all members of the community, not just Catholics; the increasing spirit of ecumenical cooperation among the Christian churches; the untiring efforts at inter- religious understanding and cooperation. I was profoundly impressed by the marvelous work done by His Beatitude Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah, who will be retiring this year from administrative responsibility but not from his outstanding priestly work, and by the obvious spirit of service and dedication of his coadjutor and designated successor Archbishop Fouad Twal.

Otis Title: PALESTINIAN WOMEN: MOTHERS, MARTYRS AND AGENTS OF POLITICAL CHANGE Advisor: Dr. Martin Rhodes Degree Date: June 2011 ABSTRACT This dissertation seeks to understand the role of women as political actors in the rise of Islamo-nationalist movement in Palestine. Using a historical and ethnographic approach, it examines the changing opportunity structures available to Palestinian women in the nationalist struggle between 1987 and 2007.
