Scissor Sisters by Claude J. Summers Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2010 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The American pop band Scissor Sisters was spawned in New York City's gay club scene and has cultivated a large glbtq fan base around the world, especially in the United Kingdom and the United States. With four of its current five members openly gay men; with the lyrics of their songs regularly addressing transgressive sexuality and glbtq subjects, such as transsexual prostitutes and coming out to one's family; and with the group's music and flamboyant presentation drawing on the rich heritage of gay dance music, especially disco and Scissor Sisters lead glam rock: it is not a stretch to suggest that the band expresses a contemporary gay singers Ana Matronic artistic vision, notwithstanding its consistent rejection of the label "gay band." and Jake Shears. DVD Review: Scissor Sisters Live in Victoria Park London 2011
DVD Review: Scissor Sisters Live In Victoria Park London 2011 Rewind to summer 2011, and the Scissor Sisters are riding high off of three successful albums, starting with their self-titled debut in 2004, moving through ‘Ta-Dah,’ and right into 2010s, disco-fied, ‘Night Work.’ With success both in the U.S. and abroad, they seemed like a fine choice to play at London’s ‘Out and Fierce Festival,’ and the rain was not going to stop play. Fortunately for Scissors Sisters fans, the suitably flamboyant stadium show was caught on camera as lead vocalists Ana Matronic and Jake Shears bounded onto the stage. While the bright rubber outfits worn by both singers certainly caught the eye, it is the music that really glowed as the band delivered a number of hits with a smattering of camp interludes. Among the hits were ‘Take Your Mama’ and ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ as the band impress throughout, particularly the bass-work of Babydaddy, and Del Marquis’ expressive guitar riffs. As a viewing experience, this DVD keeps things straight-up and simple, with cameras placed on-stage, in front of the audience, and sweeping across the whole area, giving a variety of views. Luckily there are no “special effects” to detract from the show, and the editing is thoughtfully managed, with cut-aways being timely, but not too rapid. As for the sound, this is definitely 100% live! While this means that you can’t expect the crisp clarity of a studio recording, the quality is far from bad, and, in fact, improves as the show goes along (perhaps the sound-man was getting used to things as the show continued). -

01 Mapplethorpe 2011
PRESS RELEASE ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE: NIGHT WORK CURATED BY SCISSOR SISTERS WITH: MATTHEW BARNEY / TOM BURR / DAN FISCHER / NEIL GALL / PAUL LEE / GLENN LIGON / OSWALDO MACIA / JACK PIERSON / MARC SWANSON / SCOTT TRELEAVEN / BANKS VIOLETTE / GILLIAN WEARING / 19 JANUARY – 19 FEBRUARY 2011 OPENING: TUESDAY 18 JANUARY, 6 – 8PM Robert Mapplethorpe was an icon of the American avant-garde in the late twentieth century, embodying in his life and art a powerful sense of freedom in all its manifestations – creative, political, personal, sexual. Since his untimely death from an AIDS-related illness in 1989, Mapplethorpe’s presence has continued to be felt across all art forms, his unrepentantly honest and meticulously composed explorations of desire, transgression and identity offering inspiration and challenges to a wide range of visual artists, filmmakers, writers and musicians. Scissor Sisters, one of the pre- eminent bands to emerge from New York’s art scene in the past decade, last year celebrated Mapplethorpe’s distinctively dark and decadent sensibility by deploying a series of Mapplethorpe’s photographs as the artwork for their most recent album release, as well as the singles from the album and the design concept for the accompanying world tour. This exhibition brings together the seven Mapplethorpe images chosen by Scissor Sisters, along with other photographs, Polaroids and unique and rarely seen sculptures by the artist, and with the band’s selection of important works by major contemporary artists who have admired or been influenced by Mapplethorpe’s aesthetic and attitude. Uncompromising but life-affirming, Mapplethorpe’s fascination with eroticism and mortality, beauty and liberty produced very contemporary interpretations of universal themes, themes which found articulation through the artist’s exacting gaze upon the harmonic, indeed sculptural, possibilities of the objects and scenarios he encountered. -
