Champions of Cal Oaks top scratch league, the 640 Scratch Trio. How- ever, most don’t know about the drama and back stories that made championship night so interest- ing. Let me fill you in. While our championship team was led by the experienced Gulley brothers (Ken and Dave but not Randy) no one should forget that it was anchored by JAMES HAWKINS. Hawkins is a young phenom who started as a two hander but recently changed to a conventional release. The transfor- mation has been difficult a times, with James departing Cal Oaks discouraged on many nights. In fact the week before championship night he had to withdraw from competition because of difficul- ties. The question leading up to playoff night was whether James would be ready. In the days leading up to the playoffs Dave Gulley met with James and encouraged him. Dave’s words and support got James back on track and ready to go. And boy was James ready. On cham- pionship night he rolled four big games as his Rancon Realty team won four match games and the championship. Should anyone have been surprised by Hawkins dramatic, sudden and outstanding performance? NOT ME. As a youngster Hawkins exhibited the potential to become the best young Citrus Belt bowler since VINCE WOOD. James’s long time friend and mentor, PBA Champion RHINO PAGE, per- sonally told me that the two handed Hawkins could compete on the PBA Tour right now. James was so good so young that he rolled his first perfect game at age 11. So why shouldn’t he shine on championship night? The GUTSIEST PERFORMANCE of championship night came from RYAN CHRISTIAN- SON. With one teammate absent and another walking out the door just before their match was to begin, Ryan was left alone to represent Sheridan Financial. While his team was penalized ten pins for each of his two absent teammates, Ryan carried on alone and boy did he compete. Ryan went on to roll a 267 game and lost by just 18 pins. After his valiant effort, I told Ryan that the 20 pin penalty cost his team the match. PUTTERS HIS TWO ABSENTPUTTERS TEAMMATES COST HIM THE MATCH! Ryan was philosophical about his predicament and gracious in defeat. Without blaming his teammates he told me that a solid ten pin, sandwiched between two triples, cost him 21 pins in count and the match.
