Doubles leaders emerge in all three divisions at USBC Open Championships

There was an exciting race for the Regular Doubles lead March 12 at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas as two sets of teammates battled for the top spot at the 2017 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships. Both pairs got off to a hot start and lost some momentum down the stretch, but reigning Professional Bowlers Association Southwest Region Bowler of the Year Chris Hibbitts II of Keller, Texas, used an 10-strike final game to cruise into the lead with Clint Dacy, also from Keller. Hibbitts, a 45-year-old right-hander, opened the final game with five con- secutive strikes and closed with five more to cap off a 252 game and 695 series. Dacy failed to double in the finale but contributed a 625 set to the leading 1,320 effort. Lennie Boresch Jr. and his son, Jacob, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, previously held the lead with 1,289. "We've never made it to the lead before, and it's one of those things you always think would be pretty cool," said Dacy, a 42-year-old right-hander who made his 18th USBC Open Championships appearance. "We usually bowl in June, and making the web page (BOWL.com) at that point usually means a really good score with a chance to win. In March, it may not last through the weekend, but it was a lot of fun." The other Regular Doubles contenders were USBC Hall of Famer Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, also from Keller, and former Team USA member Steve Smith of San Diego. Dorin-Ballard started the day with a 290 game and finished with a 704 set, while Smith added 569 for a 1,273 total and fourth place overall. On the next squad, Duane Kruger and Jeff Kusnerick of Streator, Illinois, took command of Standard Doubles with a 1,174 total. Kusnerick set the pace with a 596 series, and Kruger added 578, as the two passed brothers Stephen and John Schipper of Botkins, Ohio, who previ- ously held the lead with 1,131. The Classified Doubles lead went to the Montana father-son duo of John and Charles Lindeman, who haven't competed in the Open Championships in more than a decade and had a memorable return to the lanes in 2017. They posted a 1,058 total March 14 to slip past Mike Ignacio of Seaside, California, and Anthony Souza of Watsonville, California, who previously held the lead with 1,034. John Lindeman contributed a 552 series to the per- formance, and Charles Lindeman added 506. Illinois bowler celebrates 50 years of Open Championships participation Ron Ramza of Streator, Illinois, became the first bowler to hit a participation milestone at the 2017 USBC Open Championships as he made his 50th con- secutive appearance at the event. The 71-year-old right-hander began his tournament career at the 1968 tour- nament in Cincinnati, and he was welcomed into the 50-Year Club on March 11 with family and friends cheering him on at the South Point Bowling Plaza. He received a plaque, chevron and diamond lapel pin to commemorate the achievement. In his 50th appearance, Ramza rolled sets of 471 in team, 459 in doubles and 401 in singles for a 1,331 all-events total. In his career, he's knocked over 80,950 pins for a lifetime average of 182.3. In total, 23 bowlers are scheduled to celebrate their 50th tournament ap- pearances in 2017.

March 2017 - www.bowlingworld.com 19 PWBA’s McEwan Repeats As World Bowling Tour Finals Champion By Aaron Smith

LAS VEGAS -Two-time Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour champion

Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, successfully defended her World Bowling Tour Finals title Sunday by delivering a clutch strike in the final frame. The 25-year-old right-hander's strike at The Orleans Bowling Center gave her a final score of 203, forcing two-time PWBA Player of the Year of Cheektowaga, New York, to mark in her 10th frame to secure the win. Johnson's first shot found the pocket, but she left a devastating 7-10 and was unable to convert, finishing with a final score of 200. McEwan earned $20,000 for the win, while Johnson netted $10,000. The semifinal and final matches featured the "Current Frame" scoring system, where players earned 30 pins a frame for each strike and 10 pins, plus the total from their first shot of that frame, for a spare. Players earned their total pinfall for the frame for an open. Bowlers only compete for 10 frames in the "Current Frame" system, so there are no additional shots in the 10th frame if a player strikes or spares. The maximum score is 300. After starting the title match with two consecutive strikes, McEwan was unable to strike The 2017 PWBA Tour again until the 10th frame, converting four multiple-pin combinations to keep herself in Schedule: contention. Johnson held a 28-pin lead heading into the ninth frame but was unable to mark in her final two frames. April 27-29: Rohnert Park, Calif., "In the moment, I didn't think that strike would be enough," said McEwan, who won the 2016 H.H. Emir Cup in Doha, Qatar. "I hadn't struck on that lane in a while, so I just Double Decker Lanes wanted to get to the pocket. It's hard to watch that happen on the bench to someone who's such a good friend and someone I look up to, but sometimes bowling works that May 4-6: Sacramento, Calif., Steve Cook’s Fireside Lanes way. I need to appreciate being on this side of it, because I know the other side can May 11-13: Fountain Valley, Calif., Fountain Bowl come just as easily." Now, McEwan will look forward to continuing to prepare for the upcoming PWBA Tour May 17-23: Baton Rouge, La., Baton Rouge River Center season, which starts with the PWBA Sonoma County Open in Rohnert Park, California, (*USBC Queens) on April 27-29. June 1-3: Wichita, Kan., Northrock Lanes "We'll definitely need some practice before then," said McEwan, who won the 2015 June 8-10: Lincoln, Neb., Sun Valley Lanes Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship. "My execution wasn't very good, but I walked away with the win, so I'll have to take that momentum into the season." June 15-17: Canton, Mich., Super Bowl In the semifinal match, Johnson bested Colombia's Anggie Ramirez Perea, 268-220. June 22-25: Green Bay, Wis., The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley Ramirez took home $5,000 for finishing in third place. (*PWBA Players Championship) of Austin, Texas, captured the men's World Bowling Tour Finals June 29-July 1: Orlando, Fla., Boardwalk Bowl title, defeating Sweden's Martin Larsen in the championship match, 243-213. The 2016 United States Bowling Congress Masters champion struck on six of his first July 6-8: St. Petersburg, Fla., Seminole Lanes seven shots in the title tilt to build a 33-pin lead and secured the win on the bench after July 13-15: Rochester, N.Y., AMF Gates Lanes Larsen did not strike in the 10th frame. July 27-30: TBD (Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles) The 20-year-old Simonsen found some redemption at The Orleans Bowling Center July 31-Aug. 6: Plano, Texas, Plano Super Bowl after falling short in his title defense at the USBC Masters. March 2017 - www.bowlingworld.com 25 ASK BOB by Bob Korth

Q. I am in the middle of a terrible slump. Do you have any preferred slump bust- ers?

A. There are several things you can do to bust a slump. First you have to re- member you haven't forgot how to bowl. What happens in a slump is you have lost confidence in your game and many times it is just mental. When you lose confidence the you begin to press. You begin to try and figure out what you are doing wrong. You start trying to place the ball instead of roll it. You begin to squeeze the ball and the arm-swing get's very tight. I myself have just been going through a month long slump myself. I am beginning to come out of it now. Here is what I have been doing to break this slump. I went to practice and all I tried to do was loosen up my arm-swing. I worked on relaxing my hand, use a softer grip. Then just relax the shoulders and visualize the ball just hanging like it was on the end of a string. Keep my arm as loose as I could and just let the ball roll off my hand at release. Do not care at first where the ball goes just look for the feel of a very easy and relaxed swing. This is the most difficult thing to do when you are trying to score and your confidence is down. Do this for a couple of practice sessions before you put pressure back on yourself to score. You have to build trust in your swing again and start to have some fun again. Then while still in practice try shooting for score but be aware of staying with the relaxed arm-swing and you will see that you will begin to score again and best of all it will become fun again.

Q. How many different spare combinations are there in bowling? 12 Brunswick Lanes with Quibica Scoring 12 Bumper lanes / Birthday Parties A. This is a great game for working on spares and is a nice variation on just throwing shots with no purpose in practice. It keeps spare practice interesting.

Q. I am getting a new ball and I have been having problems with hanging up in the thumb at release. What thumb pitch is best?

A. Thumb pitches in a bowling ball are like finger prints. They are different for everyone. Someone with a short span or very flexible fingers can use a zero or even plus pitch in the thumb. Conversely someone with a long span or very stiff fingers will require varying amounts of reverse pitch in the thumb hole. So the answer is I don't know but your local pro shop operator will know so place your trust in her/him. They should watch you bowl, check your hand and decide the

Young Talent Excels, Sets Pace At

2017 USBC Masters By Matt Cannizzaro

LAS VEGAS - When Jalen Mosley of Indianapolis finished schooling some of the best bowlers in the world during the first round of qualifying at the 2017 United States Bowling Congress Masters, his demeanor was calm and he remained fo- cused - not on bowling, but on heading off to work on his language arts homework. The 16-year-old high school sophomore is taking the week off of school to see where he ranks among the best around, but staying current on his school work is as important as staying above the cutline at one of the premier events for USBC members. After the first of the week's three qualifying blocks at The Orleans Bowling Center, Mosley is in 74th place with a 1,080 total, and his eyes are on a spot in the event's 64-player double-elimination match-play bracket. His five-game effort Tuesday included a high game of 246 and a clutch finish in the fifth game of the day, in which he struck on five of his final six shots. "This is a really cool experience, and I'm still amazed I bowled as well as I did," said Mosley, who finished tied for third place in the U15 division at the 2015 Junior Gold Championships and was 36th in the same event in 2016. "My entry to the
