A Christmasby DaveMazey Williams Miracle Over the past 35 years I’ve always looked forward to the Christmas holiday, not only to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but also to reflect upon the joy and blessings that this unique holiday brings to just about everyone in the USA. It’s also a time to carry on with my custom of creating a unique one of a kind Christmas cards, in the tradition that began with an AMF marketing genius named John Mazey. Every year Mr. Mazey would come up with a distinctive holiday card, sometimes quirky or pecu- liar, but always completely different from previous years and in a class by it- self. I have carried on this unwritten passage of Mr. Mazey’s for the past 35 years, often resorting to just a color variation or type- face change. In other years I succumbed to time and monetary constraints and sent out extras (of which I have many!) from previous years. MAZEY MEMORIALIZED - 35 years of memories are displayed in this cornucopia of homemade Christmas Cards. When I arrived on the scene at AMF Headquarters in Like most of my “Mazey adventures,” I had virtually “Here’s all that you have to do,” the film director said, 1982, John was one of the first executives that took a shine no idea what the topic of the commercial was to be until as I held in my tummy and took small sips of air. “Each to me and my knowledge of bowling, which was lacking we arrived on the set. 100 continued from page 1 Showing grace and good humor during his semifinal match of the Professional Bowlers Assn. Tournament of Champions exactly nine years ago, Daugherty had the crowd eating out of his hand at the end. Splits on frames one, three, five, six, eight, nine and 10 would have had lesser people kicking the ball return. Instead, the right-handed Daugherty kept chucking his ball down the lanes the best he could, hoping his string of mis- ery would end – at some point. It never did. But the unshakeable Daugherty celebrated when he knocked down two pins of his 4-6-7-10 split on his last shot to allow him to reach an even 100. And the fans cel- ebrated with him, as he traded high-fives with much of the gathering with a big smile on his face. And speaking of money, the Tournament of Champions winner that year earned a $250,000 bonanza, so Daugherty missed out on a spectacular payoff. defeated Daugherty, 299-100, in that semifinal match. Koivuniemi went on to win the Tourna- ment of Champions title. (Daugherty still won $50,000 for finishing third.) It’s worth watching the video of the Koivuniemi-Daugherty match online to see how someone can handle big-time adversity – without testily dribbling his bowling ball off the floor. After watching the match, one can conclude that Koi- vuniemi was not the only winner in that tournament. Postscript: In 2019, Daugherty finished second in Gene Carter’s Pro Shop Open, losing to Dom Barrett, 217-209, in the title match. In 2016, he won the PBA Wolf Open for his second career PBA Tour title by defeating rookie Fran- cois Lavoie, 212-192, in the championship match. Torneo La Raza continued from page 1 the Torneo La Raza. The country is home to crocodiles, parrots and rare reptiles. There are ocean beaches, rain forests, mountains and lakes. It is an exotic land which of- fers every visitor something unique. The Torneo La Raza provides bowlers with an opportunity to experience this unique country while competing for cash and accomplish- ment. With regards to their bowling results at the Torneo La Raza, both BridJette and Joseph did well. While en- joying their surroundings and immersing themselves in their Costa Rican surroundings they scored high enough to place in the TOP TEN in several events. In the Women’s Senior Division BridJette finished fourth in All-Events, Doubles and Team. In the Men’s Senior Division Joseph placed second in All-Events and third in Doubles, Singles and Team. He also finished second in the Super Senior Division Singles event. Darn good bowling. Hail, Hail Rock and Roll. Hail Hail Bowling! Bowling can be adventurous, Bowling can be exciting, Bowling can be educational, Bowling can be challenging, and bowling can be fun. Bowling provides bowlers with opportunities not otherwise available to them. Bowling can create life- long memories. That’s why “BOWLING MAKES LIFE WORTH LIVING”. That’s why Bowling makes life so stimulating and delightful for BridJette and Joseph. For them Bowling and life is all about adventure, excitement, learning, competing and enjoyment. Bowling provides the opportunity for them and all of us to experience all of these. Good luck and safe travels in 2020 to all bowlers and especially to one of Bowling’s most interesting cou- ples, BridJette Whaley and Joseph De La Torre.

Miracleby Carolor Mancini Menace? Checking the calendar, it is December 26th, 2019. I’m sitting at my desk in a 68 lane center. There are 4 phone lines for incoming calls...and thats exactly whats been go- ing on since 10 a.m. The calls are constant and the ques- tions are all the same. How much for a game? Shoes? Can I reserve a lane for tonight? Can I bring food? Do you have little shoes and balls for little kids? The year is 365 days long, why would anyone decide to go bowling...especially if you’ve never bowled before? Too expensive to go to Dis- neyland? Too far to the snow? Saw bowling on T.V? This is definitely NOT a complaint! What an opportunity to welcome new customers to the center, to taste the food, play the arcade games, feel SAFE and enjoy a game that ANYONE can play. Managers have a great chance to show off their best “stuff” and maybe add to the mailing list. Will they remem- ber a good esperience? Will they book an event? Bowl big! Make it fun, make it tasty, make it an adven- ture. (They’ll be back.) Maybe before next December 26. Page 10 CaliforniaBowlingNews.com January 9, 2020
