Scott McElroy* Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov was an early 20th century Russian plant scientist who was killed by Joseph Stalin in 1943 for his adherence to basic genetic principles. Vavilov is well known within plant breeding and plant evolutionary biology circles, yet the science of Vavilov is just as important to the field of weed science. Specifically, Vavilov proposed that certain weeds adapted to weed control practices to survive in prehistorical agrarian societies. Most would refer to this adaption as crop mimicry, but the term ‘‘Vavilovian mimicry’’ is more apt. Vavilovian mimicry requires three factors: a model—the crop or desirable plant; a mimic—the weed; and an operator—the discriminating agent, possibly human, animal, or machine. In a modern context, it is proposed that weed adaptation to herbicide applications be included as a form of Vavilovian mimicry, with the acknowledgement that the operator is the herbicide. In this context, Vavilovian mimicry is the adaption of the weed mimic to be perceived by the operator as visually, physically, or biochemically indistinguishable from the crop model. This review will cover the history and legacy of Vavilov in a condensed version in the hope that weed scientists will hold this individual in high regard in our future endeavors and begin to acknowledge Vavilov as one of the first scientists to propose that weeds can mimic the attributes of crops. Vavilov had created a comprehensive plant breeding and genetics program to rival any other in the world and he did it by not being closed off to the world but by being open to all discoveries and ideas that all had to offer (Medvedev 1970). But in the Stalinist-led Soviet Union, scientists affiliated with persons outside the country were seen as possible conspirators against the government (Crow 1993; Medvedev 1970). Vavilov was frequently labeled a traitor and spy for foreign governments plotting to destroy the Soviet Union by not producing improved varieties of crops fast enough, thus prolonging famines and starvation. Trofim Lysenko was a self-taught crop scientist who garnered attention as an opponent of Vavilov. Lysenko used political posturing, bold promises that could not be delivered upon, and absolute lies to destroy scientific research in the Soviet Union beginning in the 1930s (Crow 1993; Medvedev 1970; Roll-Hansen 2005). Bourgeois members of Russian society were hated because they were property owners; they were not considered to be working for a living and thus were the enemy of Communism. Being called bourgeois in Russia at this time was essentially a death sentence, as those who disagreed with Communist values were “removed” by the government.

Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov (1887–1943), one of the pioneers of 20th century plant breeding, is best known for seminal work in identifying centers of origins and diversity for cultivated plants. Vavilov studied genetics with William Bateson from 1913 to 1914 at the John Innis Horticultural Institute. In 1921, he was chosen by Vladimir Lenin to head the Branch of Applied Botany in Petrograd (St. Petersburg) and rose to be the Director of the All-Union Institute of Agriculture in Leningrad, where he oversaw agricultural research for the entire country. By 1934, Vavilov established more than 400 research institutes and experiment stations with a staff of 20,000. In this captivating biography of the Russian plant geneticist/botanist Nikolai Vavilov, Pringle tells the story of how one of the twentieth centuries greatest botanists who dreamed of feeding the world died of starvation. Though he worked for numerous years for the Russian state, Vavilov was persecuted, incarcerated, interrogated and very likely tortured by Stalin’s communist regime for his unwavering confidence in Mendelian ge - netics. Vavilov, as portrayed by Pringle, was a passionate man full of energy, insatiable cu - riosity and unrelenting drive. He was first and foremost a scientist, though Pringle also devotes time to discussing Vavilov’s family life. And though many of the charges brought against Vavilov by the KGB were of subterfuge and disloyalty to the motherland, Pringle works throughout the biography to show Vavilov as the incomparable patriot he is re - vealed to be in numerous personal journals, letters, interviews and records. Vavilov even tried to convince American contemporaries working at the time with T. H. Morgan to come to Russia and join him in his botanical cross breeding experiments. Of those who accepted Vavilov’s invitation, only a few lived through the closing of Stalin’s fist around scientists he deemed to be too theoretical.     President of Stalin' s Academy The Mask and Responsibility of Sergei Vavilov By Alexei Kojevnikov * T HAS BECOME A CLICH$ when speaking about Sergei Vavilov (1891-1951), to I start with a dramatic comparison of two fates: that of Sergei himself-a high-ranking official, president of the Soviet Academy of Sciences at the apogee of Stalin's rule, 1945- 1951; and that of his brother Nikolai-a famous geneticist who became a victim of the purges and starved in prison in 1943. Although the general reader may find it paradoxical, such a pattern was not unusual for that epoch. Participants in political games accepted the cruelty and dangers of that life as inevitable, and even Politburo members-Viacheslav Molotov and Mikhail Kalinin--could have convicts among their closest relatives. Sergei Vavilov proved himself a true politician who both administered the scientific academy and delivered the required political speeches during a time characterized by the cold war, Communist totalitarianism, nationalism (including anti-Semitism), Stalin's personality cult, and ideological purges in culture and science. He managed to perform this job without committing any major political mistakes and died in 1951 in full official recognition; Nikita Khrushchev, speaking at his funeral, called Vavilov a "non-Party Bolshevik," a laudatory term for one who was not formally a member of the Communist Party.' (See Figure 1.) However, Vavilov did not fit any of the stereotypical images of Soviet officials-the rude and energetic revolutionary, the gloomy apparatchik, and so forth. He was a phleg- matic and solitary intellectual whose hobby was searching for rare books among the heaps in secondhand bookstores and who translated Isaac Newton's Lectiones opticae into Rus- sian.

Why do I need these suits and gold? Ecology is life. That's why ecology is in the first place and economy is in the second.' INTRODUCTION Environmentalism is vital to Ukraine's survival. Yet the institu- tion of an effective environmental protection system is linked pre- cariously to the democratization and privatization processes. Consequently, Ukraine's environmentalists must emerge victorious over bureaucracy and industry. To date, Ukraine's environmental- ists have not been passive, having secured positions of political power, a strong democratic foundation, and popular support. Therefore, environmentalists may succeed in restoring and preserv- ing Ukraine's environment. In this paper, I examine how Ukraine has come so desperately to need an environmental movement and why its environmentalists may succeed. Part I is a brief introduction to Ukraine. The parts which follow look at the pre-Soviet period (II), the Soviet period (III), and the transition period (IV).
