Francis Marion Crawford (August 2, 1854 - April 9, 1909) was an American writer noted for his many novels, especially those set in Italy, and for his classic weird and fantastic stories.Crawford was born in Bagni di Lucca, Italy, the only son of the American sculptor Thomas Crawford and Louisa Cutler Ward, the brother of writer Mary Crawford Fraser (aka Mrs. Hugh Fraser), and the nephew of Julia Ward Howe, the American poet. He studied successively at St Paul s School, Concord, New Hampshire; Cambridge University; University of Heidelberg; and the University of Rome. In 1879 he went to India, where he studied Sanskrit and edited in Allahabad The Indian Herald. Returning to America in February 1881, he continued to study Sanskrit at Harvard University for a year and for two years contributed to various periodicals, mainly The Critic. Early in 1882 he established his lifelong close friendship with Isabella Stewart Gardner. During this period he lived most of the time in Boston at his Aunt Julia Ward Howe s house and in the company of his Uncle, Sam Ward. His family was concerned about his financial prospects. His mother had hoped he could train in Boston for a career as an operatic baritone based on his private renditions of Schubert lieder. In January 1882, George Henschel, conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, assess his prospects and determined Crawford would never be able to sing in perfect tune. His Uncle Sam Ward suggested he try writing about his years in India and helped him develop contacts with New York publishers. Hooks 2012 Abstract This dissertation proposes that the 1890s were critical to the formation of American literature because of their focus on identifying, collecting, and preserving an American literary tradition. Since 1930, when Fred Lewis Pattee claimed that the twentieth century began in the 1890s, a continuing strain in literary criticism has investigated the decade as the birthplace of modernism. In recent years, however, scholars have begun troubling these historical assessments of the era in order to recover a more nuanced understanding of the decade. Building on their work, I study how competing narratives of American literature existed in the 1890s alongside the fin de siècle movement toward literary nationalism. I recover a group of long-lost literary historians who envisioned a more inclusive American literary canon than was eventually adopted in the early years of the twentieth century. I use the term “scenes of negotiation” to refer to discussions of American literature in late nineteenth-century social discourse about the development of a national American literary tradition. More specifically, I argue that these scenes of negotiation can be read as literary history because no fixed narrative of American literature yet existed. These scenes of negotiation make discernible how accounts of literary history emerged at multiple sites, in multiple genres, through multiple agents.

Pilkington: A Novelist and His Public A NOVELIST AND HIS PUBLIC by John Pilkington, Jr. At the height of his fame as one of the most popular novelists America has ever produced, Francis Marion Crawford wrote a beginning writer that the one requisite for success was talent and added that "by talent, I mean a sensitive and tactful appreciation of the public taste at a given time.”1 The uniform success of his forty-odd volumes of fiction (he never wrote a novel that was not a popular success) serves to demonstrate that Crawford had talent, in his sense of the word, to a very remarkable degree; but his private correspondence also demonstrates his preoccupation with what today would be called public relations. Almost no letters of this nature have ever been published. In 1934, when Mrs. Maud Howe Elliott wrote My Cousin, F. Marion Crawford, either no letters from Crawford to his admiring public were available or she felt that they were not appropriate to her book.

Marion Crawford came to this country after re­ ceiving an education in Italy, Germany, and England and editing an Anglo-Indian newspaper in India, he had no idea that he would soon write a novel.1 A little more than a year later, he had written Mr. Isaacs: A Tale of Modern India (1882),2 thereby beginning a career which would lead him to the publication of almost fifty novels and a measure of lasting fame as the most consistently popular fiction writer of his day. The circumstances which led to the writing and publication of his first novel do not indicate that he was a bom novelist, but they do provide a valuable commentary upon the initial phases of what was to prove a remarkably successful literary career.
