The book's annotations are grouped by subject matter in 32 sections keyed to senior high students' interests and school studies, among them adventure and survival, biography and autobiography, careers and jobs, dating and sexual awareness, family relationships, history and geography, mysteries, politics, science and the environment, and sports. The bibliography includes fiction and nonfiction, with titles labeled accordingly. Author, publisher, length of publication, and ISBN numbers are included; and a directory of publishers, and author, subject, and title indexes are attached. That was the initial indication of the devotion Nancy Flamank, Jean Gelsinger, and Dorothy Staley brought to this project. For their assistance in reading and encouraging their colleagues to volunteer, I am grateful, because much of this book is the result of their cooperative efforts. The other readers, many of whom were English teachers loaded with papers and lesson plans, were faithful to the project because they themselves had used previous editions of Booksfor You. Now it was their turn to pass on information about books for reading enjoyment and knowledge to students, teachers, and librarians. They gave their time, talent, and energy in just one more way to help young people and their profession. The NCTE staff, especially Michael Spooner, remained constant in giving assistance and even provided additional help in reading and annotating as the deadline neared. Without them, the book would not be as complete as it is. The publishers regularly sent books as requested by the NCTE staff in Urbana. They, too, are interested in encouraging reading in a time when it is not always a number-one priority with young people. For their materials, we send them our appreciation for the gifts of books. Without the authors, we would not have had the opportunity to compile this book. From those of us who are avid readers, we recognize and thank contem- porary writers for continuing the history of good writing for good reading. Shirley Wurth 0 vii Foreword The National Council of Teachers of English is proud to publish four different booklists, renewed on a regular rotation, in its bibliography series. The four are Adventuring with Books (pre-K through grade 6), Your Reading (middle school/ junior high), Books for You (senior high), and High InterestEasy Reading (junior/senior high reluctant readers). Conceived as resources for teachers and students alike, these volumes reference thousands of the most recent children's and young adults' trade books. The works listed cover a wide range of topics, from preschool ABC books to science fiction novels for high school seniors; from wordless picture books to nonfiction works on family stresses, computers, and mass media. Each edition of an NCTE booklist is compiled by a group of teachers and librarians, under leadership appointed by the NCTE Executive Committee. Working for most of three or four years with new books submitted regularly by publishers, the committee

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract This article examines the effect of Jim Kay’s illustrations on the experience of reading A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. The author compares the responses of six Key Stage Three children (11–14 years old), three of whom were given an illustrated version of the text, and three a non-illustrated version. The children with an illustrated copy engaged with the text more deeply and critically than the others. They were also more likely to relate the story to their own lives. The illustrations were found to work alongside the participants’ own visualisations rather than replacing them, and opened up further possible interpretations rather than limiting them. The illustrations did not appear to have influenced the partici- pants’ overall enjoyment of the book, nor did they significantly alter the readers’ views on key themes and ideas of the text. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

Erityisesti tutkin löytyykö romaanista piirteitä ristiriitaisuudesta ja sen omaksumisesta ja individualismin ideologiasta, feministisestä ja positiivisesta äitiydestä sekä konventionaalisen naisellisuuden etuoikeuttamisesta. Tutkielmani teoreettinen kehys muodostuu feministisestä kirjallisuuden tutkimuksesta, painottuen kolmannen aallon feministiseen teoriaan. Erityisesti feminististä äitiyttä tutkittaessa tutkielman kulmakivenä on Adrienne Richin teoria äitiydestä, jota Andrea O'Reilly on kehittänyt. Tämän teorian mukaan äitiys on toisaalta miesten määrittelemä ja kontrolloima, naista alistava instituutio patriarkaalisessa yhteiskunnassa, toisaalta naisten määrittelemä ja naiskeskeinen positiivinen elämys, joka potentiaalisesti voimauttaa naisia.     DRAFT SECOND READING SPEECH HON WILL HODGMAN MP Constitution Amendment (House of Assembly Electoral Boundaries) Bill 2018 *check Hansard for delivery* I move – That the Constitution Amendment (House of Assembly Electoral Boundaries) Bill 2018 now be read for the second time. The Commonwealth recently reviewed the House of Representatives boundaries in Tasmania. This review was part of an independent redistribution of federal electoral boundaries, required under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918. The previous redistribution of the federal electoral boundaries in Tasmania was completed in 2009. The redistribution of electoral boundaries usually reflects population changes to ensure an even and fair allocation of voters among the electorates. Having even electorates is an important element of retaining ‘fairness’ in our voting system and indeed our democracy. On 14 November 2017, the Commonwealth augmented Electoral Commission for Tasmania announced new boundaries for the federal electorates in Tasmania. The augmented Commission consisted of the three members of the Australian Electoral Commission, the Australian Electoral Officer for Tasmania, Mr David Molnar, the Surveyor-General of Tasmania, Mr Michael Giudici, and the Auditor-General of Tasmania, Mr Rod Whitehead. The augmented Commission also announced that the division of ‘Denison’ be renamed to the division of ‘Clark’. This name change recognises the role of Andrew Inglis Clark in the creation of the Australian Federation. The new name and boundary changes will apply from the next federal election. However, these Commonwealth changes do not automatically apply as State electoral boundaries in Tasmania. In the past, the Tasmanian Parliament has chosen to adopt the Commonwealth House of Representatives boundaries for the purposes of House of Assembly divisions by amending the Constitution Act 1934 to ensure they coincide.
