Only a few numbers apart one may find "Desecration Rag" and "Hungarian Rhapsody No.2"; "Liebestraum No.3" and "Thanks For the Lobster"; "Rondo Capriccioso" and "Too Much Mustard". In June of 1916, the popular songs of the day were generally issued in a new 1500 Dance series, leaving the 5500 series to highlight notable classic and popular salon selections. Over the years, however, some "special" rolls do appear in this classic instrumental series as do odd accompaniment and dance or word rolls on occasion. Finally, as the piano roll market began to wane in the 1930s, the 5500 series became a popular instrumental medley series, with a few notable exceptions. Itis agai n stressed that aJ I rolls Iisted without a price code in parenthesis were dropped from factory production at some time prior to 1923 and the introduction of the coding system. SQme rolls were discontinued shortly after release: sometimes being dropped entirely but at other times replaced by a newer recording. One example: the "original" Hesitation Waltz, no. 5533, was not listed in even the 1915 catalog but seems to have disappeared almost immediately, to be replaced by no. 5557. Many examples exist of such drops and changes. Early discontinued rolls (no price codes) may be of lesser musical or artist value but most are collectible nonetheless due to their general rarity. It is much easier to locate those recordings which remained available long after date of issue and thus achieved a wider circulation. The divisions in the 5500 Series are by the compiler. Part 1: Preliminary Catalog, December, 1914. Part 2: January, 1914 to Dance Series, April, 1916. Part 3: May, 1916 to end of World War, November, 1918. Part 4: December, 1918 through December, 1922. Part 5: January, 1923 (Price Codes) through December, 1929.
