BROCKETT THEATRE “charming… gorgeously rendered… both stunning and haunting.” – American Theatre Magazine "...relentlessly inventive...Beneath its zany, passionate surfaces lie some fierce investigations into the nature of art... brilliantly orchestrated." – Time Out Chicago A play about the ecstasy and excesses of performing, the dangers of public intimacy and the incompatibility of truth on stage and sanity in real life, Rude Mechs’ widely acclaimed work returns to Austin. The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance presents The Method Gun September 10-14, 2014 at the Oscar G. Brockett Theatre. Since its premiere at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in 2010, The Method Gun has toured to twelve cities, including Brisbane, Australia. “We are thrilled to present the premiere of the exciting and final version of Rude Mechs’ masterpiece, The Method Gun," says Brant Pope, Chairman of the Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin. “This production is another example of the many ways we have opened wide the doors of Theatre and Dance to the community and the region. From our partnership with the Mechs, to our collaborations with the Long Center for the Performing Arts, ZACH Theatre, and Austin Lyric Opera, we’re excited to be an integral member of the arts community in this great city.” The Method Gun explores the life and techniques of Stella Burden, actor-training guru of the 1960s and 70s, whose sudden emigration to South America still haunts her most fervent followers. -

Those concerns found expression equally in independent essays and in book reviews, so I have included both. -
EDITOR's NOTE "That's Our Skill As Creatives
Issue 1 International Centre for Women Playwrights July 2010 EDITOR’S NOTE "That's our skill as creatives - we can adapt to anything. We can make solutions.", Brian Heydenrych It was during a difficult negotiation when my colleague and friend made the above observation. It struck a nerve with me, and stuck in my brain for days. We always talk about how our creative skills can impact on other aspects of life - well this is a clear example. We are adaptable. We are not set in stone. We work every day with living, breathing changeable things, and humanity, and life, and we know how to adapt. The voices in this anthology are voices of adaptation. Of creation, recreation, ownership, the giving of life. They describe how art touches us and inspires us, as creatives. They describe the often torturous hours of wrangling with material. They describe the unique approaches to challenges, they describe the coming together of ideas. Inspiration has come from novels, from history, from myth, from real life, from other plays, from a myriad different sources and always from a spark within, that part of you which says "this means something to me", the part which urges you to tackle yet another script. Adaptation is a creative compromise - it is bringing together two ideas or identities to create a third, something new, something bigger than the two individuals. It is a conversation; a dialogue. I hope these words will inspire you in the daily adapting you do, both in your writing and in your life. Karen Jeynes, South Africa PRESIDENT’S NOTE It has been a great pleasure to witness the resurrection of the International Centre for Women Playwrights Seasons publication. -
