En Studie Om Den Svenska AIDS-Epidemin Under 1980–1990-Talet Självständigt arbete ”Bögpesten” En studie om den svenska AIDS-epidemin under 1980–1990-talet Författare: Olle Jonsson Handledare: Emilie Wellfelt Examinator: Erik Wångmar Termin: HT19 Ämne: Historia Nivå: G2E Kurskod: 2HI33E Abstract “The Gay Plague” A study on the Swedish AIDS epidemic during the 1980-1990s. The purpose of this essay is to investigate how the Swedish AIDS epidemic was presented in media, and compare this to how it was portrayed by the affected individual. I focus on the concept of exclusion through ‘we and them’-scenarios, regarding how the victims of the epidemic were treated by the media and in other contexts. My source material is divided into two parts: a media perspective and an individual perspective. The first perspective consists of press clips from four Swedish newspapers based in the capitol Stockholm, as well as news features in both TV and radio. The second perspective consists of diaries from one of the many victims of the epidemic. In this case, the media takes the position of an innocent bystander to the disease and its impact on society. The media is also an informative actor to the citizens about the disease, but also as an opinion creator who forms a relation between the reader and the victims. Articles from the early period warns the public of the impending threat and that ‘AIDS affects anyone’, while also demanding that the affected risk groups need to change their lifestyle in order to protect themselves and others. The later period tends to criticize the moral panic caused by the early period, due to that the heterosexual majority was not affected, even though the disease still affected the known risk groups.

Femininity”). However, Dahlbeck had already established herself as a star long before her collaborations with Bergman. The popularity of Bergman’s three comedies (Waiting Women (Kvinnors väntan, 1952), A Lesson in Love (En lektion i kärlek, 1954), and Smiles of a Summer Night (Sommarnattens leende, 1955)) suggests that they catered to the Swedish audience’s desire to see the star Dahlbeck. To explore the interrelation between Swedish post-war popular film culture and the auteur Bergman, this thesis examines the stardom of Dahlbeck, who can, as inter-texts between various films, bridge the gap between popular film and auteur film. Focusing on the decade from 1946 to 1956, the process whereby her star image was created, the aspects that constructed it, and its relation to her characters in three Bergman titles will be analysed. In doing so, this thesis will illustrate how the concept “Pansarskeppet kvinnligheten” was interactively constructed by Bergman’s films, the post-war Swedish film industry, and the media discourses which cultivated the star cult as a part of popular culture.

  • Reclaiming Women's Agency in Swedish Film History And
chapter 5 Activism, ideals and film criticism in 1970s Sweden Tytti Soila This is how I remember it. The 1970s in Sweden was a period when activism was easy. The welfare state was still strong and unquestioned, with the possible exception of those who actually benefited from its generosity. Raising funds for different kinds of collective and cultural activities was not difficult: the government, local authorities, and others such as adult educational associations favoured many kinds of initiatives. Thus, for instance, local authorities offered—without charge—space for gatherings such as seminars for study groups, or rehearsals for amateur plays. Many schools were open after hours for almost anyone who could produce some kind of plan or affiliation to an organization. Not only public authorities, but even organizations such as labour unions had their heyday of prosperity and influence, and it was common for them to encourage cultural and collective enterprises. That is, culture was all, and ‘alternative’ (‘non-commer- cial’), vaguely leftist cultural expressions were preferred. One of the central concepts in circulation was ‘criticism’, deriving from a variety of theoretical and political (Marxist) sources, such as the Frankfurt school, which had been introduced in academia and political study circles in many places. In the aftermath of the expansion of the 1950s film club movement—with its origins in fan cultures—criticism was a notion naturally adapted in film culture as well. In addition, the profession of a film critic developed from 121 women, film and agency in the 1970s and 1980s its early function to the point where ‘anybody could write criticism’ and soon gain an air of authority and poise.1 Critics and criticism from different areas of the same field could conflict fiercely with each other, as happened between the mem- bers of the feminist movement, who insisted on more power for women in the film industry, and the film critics in the daily press.

  • Ingmar Bergman's Vietnam
10.1515/nor-2017-0189 Nordicom Review 29 (2008) 2, pp. 245-259 Shame: Ingmar Bergman’s Vietnam War ERIK HEDLING Abstract Ingmar Bergman’s filmSkammen [Shame] (1968), about a married couple trapped between the warring parties in a bloody civil war, triggered fierce ideological debate in Sweden. According to the harsh critics of the film, among whom the leading critic was well-known author Sara Lidman, Bergman had managed to create propaganda for the American go- vernment and its controversial war in Vietnam. In the present paper, the debate is studied historically in relation to ongoing research about the culture of the late 1960s in Sweden. The studied material consists of press clippings, Bergman scholarship, and Bergman’s own recently released papers at the Ingmar Bergman Foundation Archive in Stockholm. Furthermore, questions about meaning and interpretation regarding film viewing are dealt with, taking into consideration developments in contemporary film theory. Keywords: Ingmar Bergman, Skammen, Sara Lidman, Vietnam war, film interpretation Introduction The relationship between the films of Ingmar Bergman and the affluent Swedish welfare society in which the films were conceived and received over a period spanning almost exactly 60 years has never really been a scholarly issue. Bergman’s films have been stu- died academically from practically all possible angles; the purely ideological readings, however, have been scarce. This is because Bergman has often been considered apoliti- cal. He was the poet of the tormented soul, certainly not an ideological demagogue. In my ongoing research project, ‘Ingmar Bergman and the Swedish Model Welfare State’, I wish to address precisely this issue, trying to show that Bergman’s films indeed were ideologically charged and that he certainly did represent an ideological stance to some of his contemporaries, albeit hardly a demagogical one.

  • Gdr Cinema on Swedish Television
volume 10 issue 19/2021 GDR CINEMA ON SWEDISH TELEVISION THE FORMATION OF CULTURAL CONTACTS AND THE RECEPTION OF EAST-GERMAN NARRATIVES Emil Stjernholm Lund University [email protected] Abstract: This article studies the import of East German films by Swedish public service broadcaster Sveriges Radio, and their reception in the Swedish public sphere. While few GDR films reached theatrical distribution, Swedish television imported and broadcasted over 30 productions by the state-owned film studio DEFA during the 1970s and 1980s, making this the primary distribution window for East German film in Sweden. Relying on sources such as Sveriges Radio’s in-house correspondence and screening reports, the weekly Sveriges Radio magazine Voices in Radio/Television (Röster i Radio/TV) and the public service corporation’s annual reports, this study sheds light on the political, economic and ideological considerations involved in the cultural exchange between Sweden and the GDR. Keywords: Swedish television, DEFA, film on television, transnational, transmedial, cultural exchange, reception 1 Introduction During the Cold War, the media landscape became a battlefield for states that used culture as a diplomatic weapon.1 In the German Democratic Republic (GDR), ideology guided cultural policy and international cultural exchange was an important way for the country to negotiate its image abroad.2 Likewise, international cultural contacts were of crucial importance for the state-owned GDR film studio Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA) – both in its efforts to entertain and educate East German audiences and in its ambition to export GDR cinema.3 Up until the fall of the Berlin Wall, Sweden’s location between the East and the West made it a key country (Schwerpunktsland) that East Germany prioritized in its advances and propaganda efforts.4 As commercial Swedish cinemas showed little interest in the distribution of GDR cinema, DEFA sought alternative paths of distribution by targeting Swedish television.

Article Painful Neutrality: Screening the Extradition of the Balts from Sweden LARS KRISTENSEN, University of Skövde, Sweden; email: [email protected] CHRISTO BURMAN, Linneaus University, Sweden; email: [email protected] 72 DOI: 10.2478/bsmr-2018-0005 BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2018 / VOLUME 6 / ARTICLE ABSTRACT The article deals with the extradition of Baltic soldiers from Sweden in 1946 as represented in Per Olov Enquist’s novel The Legionnaires: A Documentary Novel (Legionä- rerna. The theoretical framework is taken from trauma stud- ies and its equivalent within film studies, where trauma is seen as a repeated occurrence of a past event. In this regard, literature and moving images become the means of reaching the traumatic event, a way to relive it. What separates the extradition of the Baltic soldiers from other traumas, such as the Holocaust, is that it functions as a guilt complex related to the failure to prevent the tragedy, which is connected to Sweden’s position of neutrality dur- ing World War II and the appeasement of all the warring nations. It is argued that this is a collective trauma created by Enquist’s novel, which blew it into national proportions. However, Bergenstråhle’s film changes the focus of the trauma by downplaying the bad conscience of the Swedes. In this way, the film aims to create new witnesses to the ex- tradition affair. The analysis looks at the reception of both the novel and film in order to explain the two different ap- proaches to the historical event, as well as the two different time periods in which they were produced.
