Irish Authors Collections Guide 18 August 2020 English Literature is one of the two greatest strengths of the Rosenbach’s library collections (the other being American history). What we usually call English Literature is more precisely the English-language literature of Great Britain, Ireland, and surrounding islands. Some of the greatest writers in the English language have been Irish. Dr. Rosenbach certainly recognized this, and although we don't know that he had a special interest in Irish writers as such, it means that he did collect a number of them. His interest was chiefly in pre-20th-century literature, so apart from James Joyce there are few recent writers represented. Although they are not segregated by country of origin on the Rosenbach shelves, this guide highlights Irish authors as a particular sub-set of English-language authors. The guide is arranged in alphabetical order by author’s last name, and in the instances of James Joyce, Bram Stoker, and Oscar Wilde, the list is further broken down by collections category. Throughout this guide, all objects owned by Dr. Rosenbach are marked with an asterisk (*). Those marked with double (**) are part of Philip Rosenbach’s gift to the Foundation on January 12, 1953, consisting partly of objects from Dr. Rosenbach’s estate. This guide will be updated periodically to reflect new acquisitions and further cataloging of the Rosenbach collections. Objects acquired since 2014 are marked with a “+”. For further information on any item listed on this collections guide, please contact us at https://rosenbach.org/research/make-an-inquiry/. For information about on-site research, or to request an appointment to see specific materials, visit http://rosenbach.org/research/make-an- appointment/.

  • Loughs Carra, Mask and Corrib; Resources, Borders and Passageways
Loughs Carra, Mask and Corrib; resources, borders and passageways A National Heritage Week 2020 Project by the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Heritage Network Introduction: Loughs Carra, Mask and Corrib are all connected with all their waters draining into the Atlantic Ocean. Their origins lie in the surrounding bedrock and the moving ice that dominated the Irish landscape. Today they are landscape icons, angling paradise and drinking water reservoirs but they have also shaped the communities on their shores. This project, the first of the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Heritage Network, explores the relationships that the people from the local towns and villages have had with these lakes, how they were perceived, how they were used and how they have been embedded in their history. The project consists of a series of short articles on various subjects that were composed by heritage officers of the local community councils and members of the local historical societies. They will dwell on the geological origin of the lakes, evidence of the first people living on their shores, local traditions and historical events and the inspiration that they offered to artists over the years. These articles are collated in this document for online publication on the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Geopark Project website (www.joycecountrygeoparkproject.ie) as well as on the website of the various heritage societies and initiatives of the local communities. Individual articles – some bilingual as a large part of the area is in the Gaeltacht – will be shared over social media on a daily basis for the duration of National Heritage Week.

  • The Tyranny of the Past?
The Tyranny of the Past? Revolution, Retrospection and Remembrance in the work of Irish writer, Eilis Dillon Volumes I & II Anne Marie Herron PhD in Humanities (English) 2011 St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra (DCU) Supervisors: Celia Keenan, Dr Mary Shine Thompson and Dr Julie Anne Stevens I hereby certify that this material, which I now submit for assessment on the programme of study leading to the award of PhD in Humanities (English) is entirely my own work and has not been taken from the work of others save and to the extent that such work has been cited and acknowledged within the text of my work. Signed: (\- . Anne Marie Herron ID No.: 58262954 Date: 4th October 2011 Thesis Abstract This thesis examines the extent to which Eilis Dillon's (1920-94) reliance on memory and her propensity to represent the past was, for her, a valuable motivating power and/or an inherited repressive influence in terms of her choices of genres, subject matter and style. Volume I of this dissertation consists of a comprehensive survey and critical analysis of Dillon's writing. It addresses the thesis question over six chapters, each of which relates to a specific aspect of the writer's background and work. In doing so, the study includes the full range of genres that Dillon employed - stories and novels in both Irish and English for children of various age-groups, teenage adventure stories, as well as crime fiction, literary and historical novels, short stories, poetry, autobiography and works of translation for an adult readership. The dissertation draws extensively on largely untapped archival material, including lecture notes, draft documents and critical reviews of Dillon's work.
