Mourning the Soviet Union August 17, 2011 in Books by The China Beat | Permalink By Nicolai Volland Twenty years ago, on 23 August 1991, a grim- looking Boris Yeltsin shoved a sheet of paper in front of Mikhail Gorbachev with the words, “You read this now!” Gorbachev, who had just returned to Moscow after the abortive coup d’état led by KGB generals and hardliners in his own Party, appeared tense and insecure. In front of a stunned international TV audience (original footage here [at 01:25]), he did as he was told. Gorbachev’s decree was the first in a number of documents that led to the ban of the once mighty Communist Party of the Soviet Union. It had been Yeltsin’s bravado, climbing atop a tank at the Russian parliament building and calling on the Moscow population to resist the generals’ power grab, that had saved Gorbachev, the Soviet leader.

  • China Targets More Short Track Golds at Vancouver Olympics 10:53, January 27, 2008
China targets more short track golds at Vancouver Olympics 10:53, January 27, 2008 China would endeavor to claim more short-track golds at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, said the 40-year-old Li Yan, head coach of the short-track speed skating national team. Li made the remarks at the 11th National Winter Games held here from Jan. 18 to 28. China did not end its winter Olympic gold draught until the Salt Lake City Games in 2002 when Yang Yang (A) took women's 500 meters and 1,000 meters short track titles. Wang Meng won the women's 500 meters at the Turin Olympics and grew up to a leading figure in China's short track. Despite of the fact that China had advantages in women's short-distance events, Li pinned the medal hopes in more events. "Besides the women's 500 meters, we strive to make breakthroughs in the 1,000 meters and even 1,500 meters events," said Li. But Li kept a clear mind at China's short-track level. "There is a substantial gap between China and South Korea at the skills, vision and training. Except the short distance and relay events that China has certain advantages, the long distance events are dominated by the South Koreans," Li told Xinhua. Li believed the gap did not only exist in the national team force, but also in the reserve force. "We are lack of the reserve force. I cannot see the hopeful young players for the national team." "Besides South Korea, Chinese skaters still meet great challenge from Canada and the United States," said Li.

Advances in Engineering Research, volume 121 2nd International Conference on Advances in Materials, Mechatronics and Civil Engineering (ICAMMCE 2017) The cultivation of college students in Japanese major self-learning ability Zhang Hui , Xiao Liangdong Jingdezhen Ceramic University1 Key words: Colleges and universities; Japanese professional; Student; Self-study ability; Culture Abstract: As one of the important positions in the field of talents cultivation, Japanese major is one of the important foreign language majors in colleges and universities. Different from other non-language majors, Japanese teaching has high demands on students' practical ability and applying ability. As Japanese and Chinese language habits and logic are different, learning Japanese basically rely on consciousness. In this paper, starting from the actual situation of Japanese professional teaching, to cultivate students' self-study ability put forward scientific advice, so as to help students master the effective method of self-study, a breakthrough in Japanese learning. 1. Introduction With the deepening of the new curriculum reform and the concept of quality teaching, the reform of colleges and universities is in full swing. The traditional teaching methods can not meet the demands of students and is not conducive to linking with the market. The new "project-oriented, task-driven" teaching method has become the focus of attention. At present, the continuous expansion of colleges and universities, the number of students continued to increase, the Japanese professional has always been the main professional content, but also the main channel for training translation talents and economic communication talents in China. By the traditional ideas, Many universities in China ignore the cultivation of students' self-study ability, the teaching method is single, the lack of innovation, and the practical ability of graduates is not good and unable to adapt to market demand for Japanese professional talents.

With three races in one day for those who reached the final, it was a tough day. In the heats all of the favourites went through to the next round but Elise Christie (GBR) as she was declared a non-finisher after the race for having crossed outside the finish-line parameters. It was the second successive time she had been ejected by the referees, following her disqualification in the 500m final on Thursday. 2010 Bronze medalist Park Seung-Hi (KOR) did not start due to an injury suffered in the 500m final. Christie said: “I have no idea what happened. I did a pretty clean race.” Russian Valeria Reznik also got a penalty, and Veronique Pierron (FRA) was advanced by the referee. In the final heat, Tatiana Borodulina (RUS) got a penalty and Zsofia Konya (HUN) fell leaving the qualification spots for Scott (USA), Kim (KOR) and Windisch (AUT).
