  • Scandi Navian Design Catalog
SCANDI NAVIAN DESIGN CATALOG modernism101 rare design books Years ago—back when I was graphic designing—I did some print advertising work for my friend Daniel Kagay and his business White Wind Woodworking. During our collaboration I was struck by Kagay’s insistent referral to himself as a Cabinet Maker. Hunched over my light table reviewing 35mm slides of his wonderful furniture designs I thought Cabinet Maker the height of quaint modesty and humility. But like I said, that was a long time ago. Looking over the material gathered under the Scandinavian Design um- brella for this catalog I now understand the error of my youthful judgment. The annual exhibitions by The Cabinet-Makers Guild Copenhagen— featured prominently in early issues of Mobilia—helped me understand that Cabinet-Makers don’t necessarily exclude themselves from the high- est echelons of Furniture Design. In fact their fealty to craftsmanship and self-promotion are constants in the history of Scandinavian Design. The four Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland all share an attitude towards their Design cultures that are rightly viewed as the absolute apex of crafted excellence and institutional advocacy. From the first issue of Nyt Tidsskrift for Kunstindustri published by The Danish Society of Arts and Crafts in 1928 to MESTERVÆRKER: 100 ÅRS DANSK MØBELSNEDKERI [Danish Art Of Cabinetmaking] from the Danske Kunstindustrimuseum in 2000, Danish Designers and Craftsmen have benefited from an extraordinary collaboration between individuals, manufacturers, institutions, and governments. The countries that host organizations such as The Association of Danish Furniture Manufacturers, The Association of Furniture Dealers in Denmark, The Association of Interior Architects, The Association of Swedish Furni- ture Manufacturers, The Federation of Danish Textile Industries, Svenska Slojdforeningen, The Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo put the rest of the globe on notice that Design is an important cultural force deserv- ing the height of respect.

Verner Panton VERNER PANTON (1926-1998) studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen before going on to work at Arne Jacobsen’s architectural practice. Verner Panton set up his own design studio in 1955. Panton is regarded today as one of the key figures within design in the second half of the 20th century. Verpan ApS - Egeskovvej 29 - 8700 Horsens - Denmark - Tel. +45 76 58 18 82 - Fax +45 75 61 00 05 - [email protected] - www.verpan.dk Verner Panton Verner Panton was born in the village of Gamtofte on the island of Funen in 1926. His father was a publican and innkeeper, who worked first at the inns in Haarslev and Mørkenborg and subsequently as tenant publican of the Komigen inn on the Langesø estate near Odense on Funen. It was here that Verner Panton spent his childhood as the oldest of two brothers, from the age of 10 and following his parents’ divorce with three half-brothers. His mother left Funen with Verner’s younger brother to live on the island of Lolland. • REPUBLIC of Fritz Hansene, the STORY
REPUBLIC OF Fritz Hansene, THE STORY CRAFTING TIMELESS DESIGN The name Republic of Fritz Hansen™ encapsulates the company’s entire 145-year history – from the founder, visionary cabinetmaker Fritz Hansen, to the architects and designers prized and coveted the world over. This history is all about being open to new currents, about thinking big and outside the box, about development and renewal in line with one’s own principles and origins. About crafting timeless design. The story begins in 1872, when 25-year-old master cabinetmaker Fritz Hansen leaves his Danish hometown of Nakskov and heads to Copenhagen to set up his first cabinetmaking business on small, rented premises. 1885 is a decisive year. Fritz Hansen begins his own furniture production with his own furniture programme. In 1898, he establishes a sawmill in Lillerød, north of Copenhagen. Fritz Hansen is already well known for the quality of his work, which has been a matter of course ever since. In 1899, Fritz Hansen hands the business over to his son, Christian E. Hansen, who wins such prestigious contracts as the Danish Parliament at Christiansborg Castle and Copenhagen Town Hall, the latter resulting in the Town Hall chair – the company’s first recorded collaboration with an architect, Martin Nyrop. Just as forward-looking as his father, Christian E. Hansen develops the company into an industrial manufacturer that introduces new materials, new production technologies, and a whole new design language inspired by the period’s budding functionalism. In just a few years during the 1920s, with Christian E. Hansen at the helm, the company becomes capable of steam-bending wood just as successfully as world leaders in the field.
