SMOKE AND MIRRORS (The United Nations to Grand Central Station) ____________________________________________ At the edge of the world sits a Tower. And this Tower is no structure of brick and mortar, but a kind of illusion; a trick of the light, flickering electric blue in and out of sight; a coalescing of vapors; of misplaced goodwill. The kings and queens of the world attend here, pronouncing PEACE, while raining armaments on those of their own, or those of their own they believe to be not. But still the pilgrims come in the thousands from the Terminal seeking an audience, uninformed or disregarding of this Congregation’s inadequacy. Through miles of devastated landscape they come with their fragile appeals in their hands, towards the Tower shimmering like a mirage in the distance; and the mediaeval brick city-fortress that guards its flanks. Around them, light and shadow play upon pillars of glass and steel, reflected one upon the other so reality is indiscernible from reflection; so the pilgrim, his eyes confused and diverted, does not realise that there is in fact, nothing behind the smoke and mirrors; that this entire landscape of grandiose ideals is insubstantial. Ting 8 1 – The United Nations Secretariat Tower, completed in 1952 and designed by an international committee of architects, including Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, amongst others. Ting 9 2 – Isaiah 2:4, on the Scharansky steps, named after a Soviet dissident, and part of the Ralphe Bunche Park. Landmarks Preservation Commission June 28, 2011, Designation List 444 LP-2419 154 WEST 14th STREET BUILDING, 154-162 West 14th Street (aka 51-59 Seventh Avenue), Manhattan. Built 1912-13; Herman Lee Meader, architect; New York Architectural Terra Cotta Co., terra cotta. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 609, Lot 7. On June 22, 2010, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the 154 West 14th Street Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 5). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Three people spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of New York Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, and the Historic Districts Council. Summary The 154 West 14th Street Building (1912-13), a 12-story speculative loft structure constructed for lawyer-banker and real estate developer Leslie R. Palmer, was the first completed New York City design by architect Herman Lee Meader, with whom Palmer collaborated on five projects. The building’s location at the prominent intersection of 14th Street and Seventh Avenue anticipated the southward extension of Seventh Avenue and its new subway line, and benefitted from its proximity and direct access to the Holland Tunnel and west side freight terminals. Arranged in a tripartite base-shaft-capital composition with large window areas, it is a striking and unusual example of a large loft building partly clad in terra cotta – on the three-story base, on the spandrels between the white-brick piers of the midsection, and on the upper portion. -

The New York Times: Real Estate May 7, 2021 Old Buildings, New Views Recent renovations around town have uncovered views of Manhattan that had been hiding in plain sight. By Caroline Biggs Impressions: 43,264,806 While New York City’s skyline is ever changing, some recent construction and additions to historic buildings across the city have revealed some formerly hidden, but spectacular, views to the world. These views range from close-up looks at architectural details that previously might have been visible only to a select few, to bird’s-eye views of towers and cupolas that until The New York Times: Real Estate May 7, 2021 recently could only be viewed from the street. They provide a novel way to see parts of Manhattan and shine a spotlight on design elements that have largely been hiding in plain sight. The structures include office buildings that have created new residential spaces, like the Woolworth Building in Lower Manhattan; historic buildings that have had towers added or converted to create luxury housing, like Steinway Hall on West 57th Street and the Waldorf Astoria New York; and brand-new condo towers that allow interesting new vantages of nearby landmarks. “Through the first decades of the 20th century, architects generally had the belief that the entire building should be designed, from sidewalk to summit,” said Carol Willis, an architectural historian and founder and director of the Skyscraper Museum. “Elaborate ornament was an integral part of both architectural design and the practice of building industry.” In the examples that we share with you below, some of this lofty ornamentation is now available for view thanks to new residential developments that have recently come to market. -

New York’s changing department store landscape - by Joseph Aquino December 17, 2019 - New York City Department stores come and go. When one goes out of business, it’s nothing unusual. But consider how many have gone out of business in New York City in just the past generation: Gimbels, B. Altman, Mays, E. J. Korvette, Alexanders, Abraham & Straus, Gallerie Lafayette, Wanamaker, Sears & Roebuck, Lord & Taylor, Bonwit Teller, and now Barneys New York—and those are just the ones I remember. The long-time survivors are Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and Macy’s. The new kids on the block are Nordstrom (which has had a chance to study their customer since they have operated Nordstrom Rack for some time) and Neiman-Marcus, which has opened at Hudson Yards with three levels of glitz, glam, luxury, and fancy restaurants. It’s unfortunate to see Lord & Taylor go, especially to be taken over by a group like WeWork, which has been on a meteoric rise to the top of the heap and controls a lot of office space. I was disappointed at this turn of events but I understood it, and was not surprised. Lord & Taylor had the best ladies’ department (especially for dresses) in Manhattan. I know, because I try to be a good husband, so I shop with my wife a lot! But that was a huge amount of space for the company to try to hold onto. Neither does the closing of Barneys comes as any shock. I frequented Fred’s Restaurant often and that was the place to see and be seen. -

Jessie Franklin Turner: American Fashion and "Exotic" Textile Inspiration by Patricia E. Mears Jessie Franklin Turner was an American couturier who played a prominent role in the emergence of the high-fashion industry in this country, from its genesis in New York during the First World War to the flowering of global influence exerted by Hollywood in the thirties and forties. The objective of this paper is not only to reveal the work of this forgotten designer, but also to research the traditional and ethnographic textiles that were important sources of inspiration in much of her work. Turner's hallmark tea gowns, with their mix of "exotic" fabrics and flowing silhouettes, evolved with the help of a handful of forward-thinking manufacturers and retailers who, as early as 1914, wished to establish a unique American idiom in design. -

The estab lishment of a chamber music society completes the full spectrum of perform ing arts that was fundamental to the original concept of Lincoln Center. The Chamber Music Society of Lin coln Center will have as its home the Center’s new Alice Tully Hall. This intimate hall, though located within the new Juilliard building, will be managed by Lincoln Center as an independent Wadsworth Carmirelli Treger public auditorium, with its own entrance and box office on Broadway between 65th and 66th Streets. The hall, with its 1,100 capacity and paneled basswood walls, has been specifically designed for chamber music and recitals. The initial Board of Directors of the New Chamber Music Society will com prise Miss Alice Tully, Chairman; Frank E. Taplin, President; Edward R. Ward well, Vice-President; David Rockefeller, Jr., Treasurer; Sampson R. Field, Sec retary; Mrs. George A. Carden; Dr. Peter Goldmark; Mrs. William Rosen- wald and Dr. William Schuman. The Chamber Music Society is being organ ized on a non-profit basis and, like other cultural institutions, depends upon voluntary contributions for its existence. Charles Wadsworth has been ap pointed Artistic Director of The Cham ber Music Society of Lincoln Center. These establishments provided shoppers, particularly women, assortments of fashion products that helped shape the American culture of consumption. Authors have explored the role that women played as consumers and entry-level saleswomen in department stores in both America and abroad.1 However, aside from scholarship regarding Dorothy Shaver and her career at Lord & Taylor, little is known about other female leaders of retail companies. Shaver is documented as the first female President of a major American retail company and the “first lady of the merchandising world.”2 However, Hortense Odlum, who served as first President and then Chairwoman of Bonwit Teller from 1934-1944, preceded Shaver by ten years.3 Furthermore, although Bonwit Teller operated for close to a hundred years (1895-1990), the history of the store remains somewhat obscure. Aside from brief summaries in books that speak to the history of department stores, no comprehensive history of the company exists. A historical method approach was utilized for this research. Primary sources included Odlum’s autobiography A Woman’s Place (1939), fashion and news press articles and advertisements from the period, archival records from multiple sources, and oral history.4 The use of multiple sources allowed for the validation of strategies noted in Odlum’s autobiography. Without previous management or business knowledge, Odlum approached her association with the store from the only perspective she really knew, that of a customer first who appreciated quality, style, service, and friendliness.5 She created an environment that catered to a modern woman offering products that would be appreciated, truly a Woman’s Place. -

Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 838, Lot. 48 On October 18, 2005, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of Stewart & Company building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 2). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provision of law. Three people spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of the property’s owners. In addition, the Commission received two letters in support of designation. Summary The Stewart & Company Building, designed by Warren and Wetmore, is one of the firm’s most unusual designs. The 1914 building reflects the unusual combination of diverse influences such as the 18th century British neo-Classical movement and the late 19th century Chicago School of Architecture style. The blue and white ornament of the terra cotta cladding is reminiscent of the 18th century neo-Classical movement in England, and specifically two of the most important proponents of the movement, Josiah Wedgwood and Robert Adam. Characteristic of the Chicago style are steel frame construction, masonry cladding that was usually terra cotta, large areas of glazing, usually featuring tripartite windows known as Chicago windows, and a tripartite vertical design. As the commercial center of Manhattan moved uptown so did the location of department stores.
