RunDunwoody Sponsor Spotlight!

This week Siegel & Dolt Comprehensive Dental Care , a Ruby sponsor of RunDunwoody , is in our spotlight. Our own Doctors Harris Siegel and Skip Dolt own this local practice.

Tradition plays an important role in the success of Siegel & Dolt Comprehensive Dental Care . Founded in 1962 by Dr. Harris B. Siegel's father, Dr. Alvin P. Siegel, the practice is still guided by the same old-fashioned values and integrity. "We continue to see the families, both the children and grandchildren, of many patients that were first seen in the practice more than 40 years ago," Dr. Skip Dolt says, adding, "We are extremely fortunate to continue to foster a unique, relationship-driven practice that puts people first."

When entering Siegel & Dolt Comprehensive Dental Care , patients are greeted by a soothing salt-water aquarium, complimentary beverages, calming music and access to an internet café equipped with wireless technology for convenience. "One of the things people feel when they walk in the door is the strong emphasis we place on being both state-of-the-art

Page 2 of 11 September 30, 2011 Meeting and relaxing," Dr. Siegel says.

Drs. Siegel and Dolt, who met while completing their 3-year post-doctoral programs at the University of Texas at San Antonio, are both Fellows of the Academy of General Dentistry. They are also members of the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, the American Association of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American and Georgia Dental Associations and the Hinman Dental Society.

Deeply committed to personalized attention and quality dental care, Dr. Siegel & Dr. Dolt are also committed to continued advanced training. "To ensure patients are receiving the highest quality care possible, an in-house ceramist meets and customizes veneers and crowns for each patient based on their specific dental needs" Dr. Dolt says. "We don't have a cookie- cutter approach to dentistry," Dr. Siegel says. "Everyone gets individualized care."

Siegel & Dolt Comprehensive Dental Care is located at 2751 Buford Highway, Suite 302, Atlanta 30324 and may be reached at (404) 634- 1277 . Visit their web site at www.siegelanddolt.com and be sure to thank them for supporting RunDunwoody !

Congratulations to Shaun Rawls!

On Friday morning, September 16, Shaun Rawls missed our meeting because he was attending the Atlanta Business Chronicle's "Best Places to Work" awards breakfast where The Rawls Group – Keller Williams Realty was recognized as the #1 Place to work among large companies (more than 500 people) in all of Atlanta…for the second year in a row !

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the reason for the award is The Rawls Group's recipe of caring about employees both professionally and personally, offering them a full slate of training and educational opportunities, having accessible leaders, clear communication, innovative thinking and an environment where "We've got your back" is the rule. Leadership also prepares employees for success by providing cutting-edge technology, a slew of training classes, and access to the latest data and market metrics (there is an in-house statistician). "We can show you things you didn't know and back it up with facts," explained Rawls. "It's not just our opinion."

Congratulations to Shaun and his associates!

Special Olympics Needs YOU! by Shawn W. Hardister

On Friday, October 14, 2011 , the Rotary Club of Dunwoody will be helping with the DeKalb County Schools Special Olympics Softball Skills competition at Peachtree Charter Middle School (4664 North Peachtree Road in Dunwoody). This is our fourth consecutive year helping with this event, which has quickly become a favorite for some of our members. We help with set up and take down, escort the athletes with special needs from station to station, run the stations (hitting, throwing, running, catching) and in general, make sure the kids have a good time. As you can imagine, it is fun for all involved.

Again this year, we will have two shifts . We need a few more people for the first shift and can REALLY use help for the second shift ! Because it is the day of our meeting, we encourage the first shift to go to the school as soon as the meeting is over and stay until 11:00 AM , and the second shift to arrive by 10:50AM to receive instructions from the first shift members and stay until about 1:00PM . We need about 8-10 members per

Page 4 of 11 September 30, 2011 Meeting shift. If you can stay the whole time, we would love to have you do that. Please email Shawn Hardister to sign up or with any questions that you have: [email protected] .

Build Your Skills With Junior Achievement

Peachtree Charter Middle School is looking for our help with Junior Achievement . Specifically, they want to expose more students to the concepts of business and to the great influence that Dunwoody Rotarians can have. The students gain an appreciation of critical thinking and entrepreneurial skills and explore their career aspirations.

Volunteering can yield BIG benefits for you! Specifically, Junior Achievement provides the opportunity for you to

hone your public speaking and presentation skills draw on your professional experience for examples and illustrations polish your mentoring skills gain experience in conducting formal training

Your commitment will be to prepare and teach 6 1-hour lessons using the excellent materials provided by JA. The dates over the course of the fall semester can be flexible and you and the teacher will agree on the time. You can teach one or more classes on your own or partner with another Dunwoody Rotarian or with someone from your workplace who might be interested in learning about Junior Achievement or about Rotary. This is a great way to become involved with our New Generations initiatives.

See http://georgia.ja.org/programs/documents/JA_ItsMyBusiness.pdf for information about It's My Business (the program we'll be teaching). Please contact Patti Bunker at plbunker@clearlysimplesolutions with questions or to volunteer!

Volunteer for RunDunwoody! by Kelly Michael Hundley

RunDunwoody is quickly approaching – Sunday, October 23, 2011 . Last year we needed lots of people to help with race set-up, registration, directions, course monitors, etc. We need just as many volunteers this year, if not more . With your help RunDunwoody will become known as "Simply the Best" for runners, sponsors, and all who join with us. We received lots of positive feedback from participants last year who were impressed by our organization of the day as well as the number and helpfulness of our Club Members. Presented is yet another opportunity to "show off" the Club. Let's do the Rotary Club of Dunwoody proud again this year!

Page 5 of 11 September 30, 2011 Meeting Generally, volunteers will be needed on race day in the Perimeter Place Shopping Center (in front of Loehmann's) during the period between 5:30am and 10:30am. Most volunteer assignments will involve about a 1 to 1 1/2 hour commitment within this time frame. Some assistance in transporting materials to the race site on the day before and day of the race may be needed.

Tony Karamitas has stepped up to coordinate the volunteers – way to go Tony! Tony will follow up with information about what our needs will be. For the kind of undertaking presented by a race of this size, everyone's involvement is needed, and there is something for everyone. With the race only 3 weeks away, time is of the essence to begin filling our volunteer leadership and staff positions and preparing the volunteers for another extraordinary event. So, please, let me or Tony know that you are willing to help.

With your help, our Club will exceed its goals for fundraising, community outreach, and impact. Thank you for your service!

Because of the importance of these tasks in presenting a quality event, this is not the kind of thing we want to be doing at the last minute. There is something for everyone. Please let me know where we can count on your support. Thank you.

Family Fun at RunDunwoody

Runners, walkers, tots, friends and visitors have more to enjoy at the RunDunwoody Family Festival . The Family Festival will bustle with activity from 7:00-10:00 a.m. on race day and will emphasize health and education.

In addition to the pre-race warm-up presented by Friend of the Run Operation Boot Camp , participants can stop by their table to challenge the instructors or jump start their personal fitness programs. Presenting Sponsor Saint Joseph's Hospita l will provide cardiovascular screenings. Ruby Sponsor Georgia Perimeter College will be onsite offering dental health education and screenings. Another Ruby Sponsor, The Medicine Shoppe , will offer flu shots as the flu season begins in earnest.

On hand also will be members of DeKalb Fire Rescue and the City of Dunwoody Police Department presenting an opportunity to learn more about what they do for the community. A feature not to be missed is a special guest appearance by Fire Dog "Q" . Top it all off with music, games, awards, prizes and great "tastes" of Dunwoody

Group Study Exchange Needs Your Help!

The deadline to send in applications for the Group Study Exchange team for this Rotary year is October 15, 2011 . District 6900 will be sending a team to Sao Paulo, Brazil, District 4620 for 4 weeks in May, 2012 . The District needs a team leader (a Rotarian) and four to five team members (non- Rotarian professionals early in their careers). Could you be a candidate to be the Rotarian Team Leader? Do you know someone who might be a great Team Member?

Consider Applying to be the Group Study Exchange Team Leader

This is a golden opportunity for you to hone your leadership and presentation skills, mentor young professionals and get a priceless experience in Sao Paulo Brazil. During the exchange, the Team Leader and his or her team participate in five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 presentations to local Rotary clubs, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days at the district conference, three to four hours per day of cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families. During the exchange, the Team Leader will be the coach, mentor, Rotary representative and advisor for the Team.

For the Team Leader and each team member, the Foundation provides the most economical round-trip airline ticket between the home and host countries. Rotarians in the host area provide for meals, lodging, and group travel within their district.

Consider Nominating a Group Study Exchange Team Member

Team members are young non-Rotarian professionals early in their careers who will benefit from a unique cultural and vocational exchange during which they will experience Brazil's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. Over the past several years, young professionals on outbound GSE Teams have included university educators, high school teachers, police, fire, medics; health care professionals; graphic designers; head hunters, bankers, consultants, dentists, etc. Several employers will give testimony about how this exchange is a fantastic tool for leadership development and global awareness for up-and- comers.providing a big return on the investment of time.

Good candidates are employed fulltime and intend to remain in work force. They are open-minded, tolerant and have good communication skills. The ability to speak Portuguese will be very helpful. This is a golden opportunity for you to be a hero by nominating a young non-Rotarian professional in your firm or in your community.

Applications are due to Rotary District 6900 by October 15 . Applications require an advance Rotary Club approval and sponsorship . Team Leader and Team Member selection is a competitive process, and applicant finalists will be selected for a personal interview.

Page 9 of 11 September 30, 2011 Meeting Those interviews will be held on Saturday, October 29 in Atlanta.

The Rotary Club of Dunwoody has been very actively involved with the GSE Program. Not only did Lorri Christopher serve as the District Director of the program for a number of years, but Lorri, Past President Kathy Brandt and Past President Fred Brandt have all served as team leaders. In addition, most GSE teams from District 6900 include at least one young professional sponsored by our Club.

If you might have an interest in being the Team Leader, talk to Kathy Brandt, Fred Brandt or Lorri Christopher about their experiences.

Rotary Club of Dunwoody Classifications by Anne E. Hayden

An important but sometimes overlooked facet of Rotary is the diversity of businesses and professions represented among Rotary membership that every Club strives to attain and maintain. According to Rotary International, "Each club shall have a well- balanced membership in which no one business, profession or type of community service predominates." As do all Rotary clubs, The Rotary Club of Dunwoody classifies each potential member to ensure that his or her addition to the Club will not result in an overbalance of any one business or profession.

The challenge, of course, is maintaining a balance of professions while inducting as many qualified candidates who apply for membership as we can. Clearly, this Club has historically done a great job since it is our members who have made the Club what it is today and what it will continue to be in the future.

Members are encouraged to periodically review our classifications which are maintained in an Excel spreadsheet on our website in the Member's Only area. The spreadsheet is updated every time we induct a new member. To access the Classification spreadsheet, log in and click on View Club Documents under the heading MyClubrunner. Click on Membership Classification Summary (which is currently the 5th document from the top) to save the spreadsheet.
