The study site is located in the Karakoram Mountains, Baltistan (Northern Pakistan), covering an area of 2750 Km². It is situated on the right bank of the River Indus in the Central Karakorum Mountains at an elevation range of 2000 to 6000 m at sea level. On the basis of change in topography, elevation and climate study area was classified into four Vegetation Zones viz. dry zone, agro-forestry zone, Sub-alpine zone and Alpine zone. A total of 180 species of vascular plants representing 139 genera and 53 families were collected with generic index of 1.2. Twenty four families were represented by single species. and family Asteraceae was dominant family including 36 species followed by families Papilionaceae, Polygonaceae, Rosaceaeand Chenopodiaceae representative of 11, 10, 10 and 8 species respectively. Artemisia (7 species), Chenopodium (4), Astragalus (4) and Geranium (3) were identified as leading genera. Habit wise perennial herbs prevailed with 113 species followed by annuals (41 species), shrubs (18), biennials (3) and trees (3).In biological spectrum, the area is dominated by 46% of Hemicryptophytes (84 species) followed by 21% therophytes (39), 11% Chamaephytes (21), 10% Nanophanerophytes (18),10% Geophytes (14) and 2% Mega-phanerophytes (3). The altitudinal gradient of species showed that the species richness declines with increase in elevation from sea level. Most of the species found in the middle elevations (2700-3300m) and a sharp decrease were observed at high elevation (above 3900m). Agricultural encroachment, grazing, blasts for gemstones; rock drifting and land sliding were common and severe natural and anthropogenic threats. These and many other threats to the available vegetation urge for more precise botanical explorations and prompt conservatory management in the scenario of national and global interest in these fragile ecosystems. The GE interaction was studied using a set of six quantitative descriptors. Wide range of variations was recorded for flowering, maturity, plant height, 1000 grain weight, grains plant-1 and grain yield ha-1. Significant differences in locations for all traits were recorded. Years × locations interactions was also significant (p≤ 0.05) for all traits except grains plant-1 and grain yield ha-1. Similarly, genotype × location × year interaction existed for most of the traits except plant height, grains plant-1 and grain yield ha-1. The genotype Sh-914 (29.91 g) excelled in 1000-grain weight, followed by Rd-915 (27.04 g). Maximum grains plant-1 were produced by Sh-914 (323.62) followed by the genotype Gh-918 (229.16). Maximum grain yield of 2010.27 kg ha-1 was produced by genotype Sh-914, followed by the genotype Gh-918 (1910.40 kg ha-1).

There is no count of the peaks above 5,000 and 4,000 m. Photo 146 ᭿ below No.76 seen from afar) with erratic granite boulders up to the size of a hut (o) which overlies the outcropping phyllite rocks at c. 2400-2600 m asl, i.e. 240-440 m above the Indus valley bottom. ( ) is a 6 km-long side valley, the Marshakala Lungma (Photo 149 below No.74), leading down from the 5153 m- high Marshakala, an ESE tributary summit of the 5242 m-peak (Photo 149 No.74), to 2160 m. Despite its steepness the valley has been widened to a trough and glacigenically polished. The Indus and its in part thinly wooded gravel floor (ᮀ) is at 2160 m asl. Its outer bank has undercut the phyllite rocks of the valley flank (᭞ white).
