nterviewing artists can be a tricky proposition, but it’s more complicated when you need an interpreter or are talking to Isomeone who doesn’t speak English as their first language. For- tunately, JazzWeek’s first non-jazz artist interview is with Brazilian pop star Marisa Monte, who has a good grasp of the English lan- guage, allowing us gain real insight into her process and music phi- losophy. If you’re not familiar with Monte, she’ll likely be the talk of the fall thanks to simultaneously releasing two excellent albums (Infinito Particular and a samba influenced Universo Ao Meu Redor) for Metro Blue after four years off to pursue other projects. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: Two records at the same time. Was it hard trying to keep the songs straight and avoid making two halves of the same record? We did a lot of preproduction for the samba album. The first session was May through September with Mario Caldato [for Universo Ao Meu Redor]. The sec- ond one was October to January, which is the original songs. terial was hard, but it was a challenge. It was something I invited with a differ- ent producer and created different concepts of production and ways of dealing with the arrangements. There are many points in common and there are many My objective many differences. It wasn’t hard; it was more of a pleasure. After using Arto Lindsay throughout the ’90s you’ve produced your own al- was not to be a bums or used Mario Caldato. What sort of impact did Arto have on your big artist, but work? He’s a very good static reference because he’s into literature, visual arts, music to be happy. I and everything. He’s a very well informed guy. He’s interested in what’s going on, so it was nice to have him around and talk to him about all the feelings you want to look have when you are making a record. We did a lot of good work in our ten years back when I together and I met a lot of good people through him. am old and How did you track down Mario Caldato, who is well known for his work “ with the Beastie Boys? say: “It was Mario had moved to Brazil, and I thought it was an opportunity to invite him to do it. I wanted him to have a lot of freedom with the sound of the record. good.” I also thought it would be good to have unusual sounding instruments for the sambas. He understood the idea and was able to help focus the idea to make a great record. He doesn’t seem to be an obvious choice for your samba record. I didn’t want to do a traditional samba record. I’ve done two as producer, but I couldn’t think of my music that way. If I was going to deal with this repertoire, which sounded very classic, I didn’t want the record to sound like a traditional samba record, which is why I invited Mario C, who I always wanted to work with, to produce it. Why not do a proper samba record? I wanted something that could dialogue with my other work. I wasn’t in search of a proper way of doing samba. I wanted to do my record. My way of doing samba dialogues with contemporary music. It’s a freer way of creating because that’s how the people I work with are. You studied opera in Italy, but moved back to Brazil and embarked in a ca- reer pop. Why go that route? Opera singing is for a pre-microphone world. Now we can sing a different way, in a colloquial way, because different equipment is available. Now we can sing very smooth (without vibrato) and people will hear you. There is a greater dy- namic range when not limiting yourself to opera. Based on the research for the samba album, and the way you talk about things, you seem interested in a lot of different things. Learning is wonderful. I think we can learn whatever we want and it’s good to find out things that are interesting to you. We live in a world where there ➤ jazzweek.com • September 11, 2006 JazzWeek 10 Artist Q&A: Marisa Monte (continued)

is a lot of information available. Sometimes we don’t listen to what we want to or focus on the information we want. There are a lot of things going on around us and it takes our time and focus away. I think it’s good to focus on what you want to know. It’s a power. It makes you a better person. The Tribalistas project was a collaborative effort with Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Altunes, both of whom you have written with often over your ca- reer. Why make a separate record them, when the team writes for your re- cords?

Collaborative works are very common in Brazil. We realized how uncommon it was outside of Brazil once it was released. There are many many examples of this. Even Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, the Tropicalistas, Rita Lee and Gilberto Gil. It’s very traditional for us to do collaboration or group records. Carlinhos and Arnaldo are my partners for almost 10 years now. [For the Tribalistas] we met in 2001 for a week and wrote 20 songs. We weren’t thinking about doing a record, as we always do. Then we were trying to fig- ure out what to do with them – whether we were going to keep them together or spread them around in our own records. Then we started to think about re- cording together. Added two other musicians that we work with and then re- corded 13 songs in 13 days. It was very friendly and pleasurable. We had very low expectations. We didn’t give interviews. The record just came out one day and people just started listening to it. It was a favorite in Brazil and a favorite in Italy and sold two million records. It was amazing. It proved that the music was more important and everything else isn’t of consequence. Are you surprised by the success you’ve had in Brazil and around the world? My objective was not to be a big artist, but to be happy. I want to look back when I am old and say: “It was good.” I am surprised with how popular my music is, but I always try and do my best. We cannot predict, thank God, what JW is going to work in terms of music, or what is going to happen or not. jazzweek.com • September 11, 2006 JazzWeek 11 Jazz Radio

ewey Redman’s contributions to jazz were often overlooked. As we remember him, here are a few selections from his discography as both a leader and sideman that highlight his groundbreaking career. DThe list could be many times this length; this is simply a sample.

Look For The Black Star – Freedom (1966)

An early recording as a leader from Redman’s San Francisco years is a hard-to- find collectors’ item.

Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra – Impulse! (1969)

The first of Haden’s occasional protest series is a classic early fusing of folk, jazz and world sounds.

Keith Jarrett Treasure Island – Impulse! (1974)

Redman performed and recorded often with musicians on this recording, in- cluding Charlie Haden and Paul Motian.

Living On The Edge – Black Saint (1989)

Redman displayed both his in and out sides with Geri Allen on piano, Eddie Moore on drums and Cameron Brown on bass.

In London – Palmetto (1998)

Redman again shows both his lyrical and avant-garde capabilities, this time on a live set with pianist Rita Marcotutulli, Moore and Brown.
