BIBLIOGRAFÍA. 256 5 Capítulo 1. Intercambio cultural entre Japón y Corea del Sur con Chile. 1.1 Causas y Evolución. Los chilenos han presenciado cambios culturales durante las últimas décadas. Entre ellos, la revolución del Internet y la globalización1 que han permitido que diferentes rasgos propios de otros países se inserten en la cotidianeidad del chileno común. Sin embargo, ya no se puede decir que los habitantes de Chile sólo han sido influenciados por la cultura mapuche (y otras similares), la española y los diferentes países de los que provinieron colonos europeos. Los chilenos se han podido acercar a otras nacionalidades – poco comunes en nuestro territorio pero con presencia cada vez más fuerte en lo cultural y económico- gracias a la comida como primer factor: En un ejercicio simple, en el sitio especializado en turismo nacional www.800.cl, se encuentran más de 225 restaurantes de comida japonesa, 80 de comida china y 10 de comida coreana repartidos en toda la ciudad de Santiago2. Considerando que en nuestro país existen más de 1.010 restaurantes vinculados al turismo3, podemos asegurar que al menos el 30% de ellos es de comida asiática. 1 Para el autor del libro “Identidad Chilena”, Jorge Larraín, “La globalización se refiere a la intensificación de las relaciones sociales universales que unen a distintas localidades de tal manera que lo que sucede en una localidad está afectado por sucesos que ocurren muy lejos y viceversa (…) No se entiende sólo a nivel de la economía sino que cubre una multiplicidad de otras dimensiones sociales y culturales. (…) La globalización cultural es especialmente relevante para la identidad”. (Larraín: 2014, p. 47) 2 800 (http://www.800.cl) Consultado el 19 de octubre de 2014. 3 INE-Informe Anual 2013 Turismo. 6 A través de esto se observa un claro ejemplo de sincretismo cultural al corroborar que los ingredientes de estas recetas son adaptados a nuestros recursos: al sushi se le añade palta, ingrediente imposible de encontrar en la comida japonesa, y en los restaurantes de comida coreana existe como opción el comer platos con una cantidad regulada de picante. Siguiendo con el primer ejemplo, hace unos años comer sushi era sinónimo de poseer cierto status, porque en ese tiempo no era un alimento común y los precios eran más altos que los actuales. Ciertos grupos se diferenciaban del resto al poder “comer con palitos”, pero hoy en día este tipo de “comida rápida” ha pasado a ser un snack que se puede encontrar en cualquier mesa chilena y en muchos lugares de comunas como Providencia o Santiago, siendo parte de la dieta habitual de ejecutivos y hasta de estudiantes universitarios. Es así como se presenta también un escenario totalmente diferente en el que los mismos chilenos han aprendido a hacer su propia comida oriental, en base a ingredientes que compran en tiendas cercanas, lo que hace que las preparaciones no sean tan difíciles y que cualquiera pueda llegar a decir “yo sé cocinar mi propio sushi”, lo que llegaría a brindar “cierto plus” frente a los ojos de algunas personas. Junto con esto, en el Barrio Patronato de Santiago existen supermercados en los que se puede comprar ingredientes de origen coreano y chino y cada vez son más las personas que prueban los productos de este tipo de negocios. Además, ha habido una gran apertura en los medios de comunicación hacia estos establecimientos: es común ver algunas notas periodísticas en la televisión chilena referentes al tema.

    Situations Vol. 3 (Winter 2009) © 2009 by Yonsei University Mariah Junglan Min1 [email protected] The Art of Crossing the Line Although the intensive coverage provided to the new all-boy and all-girl bands through the Internet and in more traditional media such as television may make it seem as though such they have long dominated popular music, the current explosion in popularity of idol groups begun only two years ago. What is more, this is not the first time that such groups have stormed the K-pop charts. The first wave of massively popular idol groups was in the late 90s, when a veritable army of teens made their debut as singers. Korean multi-entertainment companies recognized the business potential in well-trained young and attractive stars, and the feverish reception from the public confirmed this. The result was that H.O.T., Sechs Kies, Shinhwa, Fin.K.L., S.E.S., and G.O.D. enjoyed chart success and outstanding album sales. Around 2002, this first golden age of idol groups came to an end. Most of the first wave of idols split up, while some individual members went on to pursue solo careers. Although some groups did continue, with Shinhwa performing as recently as 2008, the moment of the idol group seemed to have passed. For a short time, the K-pop scene was now host to a series of successful solo artists, such as Rain and Yi Hyo-ri, the latter a former member of the all-girl band Fin.K.L. In 2004, the first forerunners of the second wave began to appear, with TVXQ, for example, releasing their first single that year.

Korean Drama and Korean pop music are two phenomenal Abstract Korean pop culture which are spreaded around the world. In 1997, Korean Drama was first broadcast in China, following with the big step in 2004 where Korean Drama exported also to Hong Kong and Taiwan while Korean Pop Music start to gain popularity in the late of 1990s. In Indonesia, Korean Drama and K-pop music began to be popular in beginning of 2000’s. Their popularity are followed by Korean foods in 2014. This research is to look specifically on whether Korean Pop Culture influence Indonesian people to choose Korean foods as their options. Using SPSS software and with simple linear regression method analysis, 100 respondents’ data collected is processed through validity and reliability test, classical assumption test and hypothesis testing. The results show that Korean Pop Culture influence Indonesian people to choose Korean foods.     Asian International Studies Review Vol. 18 No.1 (June 2017): 153-169 153 Received March 15, 2017 Revised May 10, 2017 Accepted May 20, 2017 Hallyu at a Crossroads: The Clash of Korea’s Soft Power Success and China’s Hard Power Threat in Light of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) System Deployment HANNAH JUN* The past two decades have witnessed the remarkable success of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, with Korea welcoming a large influx of foreign visitors and benefiting from massive consumption of products ranging from Korean television and film, K-pop and lifestyle products. A more recent announcement by CJ E&M points to an even more aggressive plan for regional ubiquity, as encapsulated by Hallyu 4.0. Simultaneously, we have already felt some of the effect of policy changes in China – a core Hallyu market – as a response to Korea’s plan to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. In this sense, we see the stirrings of a clash between Korean soft power and Chinese hard power, and are uncertain who will emerge on top. This paper examines the broad success of Hallyu from key theoretical perspectives, while addressing linkages between Korean corporations and cultural power/influence that have led to an announcement such as Hallyu 4.0. This paper also highlights the recent tensions between Korea and China, specifically with respect to THAAD deployment, and outlines potential implications for businesses and policymakers through preliminary scenarios. As the most significant part of Hallyu, Korean popular music, K-pop, captivates global audiences. From a typical K-pop artist, Psy, to a recent sensation of global popular music, BTS, K-pop enthusiasts all around the world prove that K-pop is an ongoing global cultural flow. Despite the fact that the term K-pop explicitly indicates a certain ethnicity and language, as K- pop expanded and became influential to the world, it developed distinct features that did not exist in it before. This thesis examines these distinct features of K-pop focusing on race, language, and musical genre: it reveals how K-pop groups today consist of non-Korean musicians, what makes K-pop groups consisting of all Korean musicians sing in non-Korean languages, what kind of diverse musical genres exists in the K-pop field with two case studies, and what these features mean in terms of the discourse of K-pop today. By looking at the diversity of K-pop, I emphasize that K-pop is not merely a dance- oriented musical genre sung by Koreans in the Korean language.

MARKETING K-POP AND J-POP IN THE 21ST CENTURY Sarah Brand Senior Thesis Department of East Asian Studies Dickinson College May 10, 2017 Brand 2017 Music is an important part of daily life and, as a result, an integral part of culture. The way in which individuals are exposed to different genres and types of music helps illustrate the extent to which globalization has had an impact on the world. Before the invention of the internet, music was only available for purchase to consumers who went to record stores and physically purchased goods. Now, countless unique songs and genres are readily available with just a single search. Due to how easily consumers can access new music, digital distribution has completely overtaken the profit from selling physical copies of albums. In 2006, record labels still made $9.4 billion from CD sales in the United States, despite the fact that digital distribution entities, such as Napster and iTunes, provided digital copies of the same songs.

    YG Entertainment (122870 KQ ) Uncertainties lie ahead Entertainment TP lowered to W32,000; positive expectations overshadowed by earnings void We are lowering our target price on YG Entertainment by 17% to W32,000 (based on Results Comment P/E of 25x). We reduced our 2018 net profit attributable to controlling interests forecast to W23.5bn, taking into account: 1) a higher effective tax rate (30% level); 2) February 23, 2018 early recognition of iKON concerts in 2017; and 3) won appreciation. The company had a hefty tax bill in 1Q18, which we believe was because only half of the limit on income deduction for services provided overseas was applied in the quarter, a factor that shou ld be reflected in future net profit forecasts. Given that royalties account for nearly 30% of consolidated revenue, we assume an effective tax rate in the 30% range (Downgrade) Trading Buy for 2018 onwards. Some potential opportunities still exist, including: 1) growth of the company’s lineup Target Price (12M, W) ▼ 32,000 outside of Big Bang; 2) new content ventures; and 3) normalization in China. However , we believe such tailwinds are overshadowed by tax issues and the upcoming void in earnings. By analyzing the transformation of K-pop in tandem with Japanese influences through a convergence of political economy in terms of historical approach and textual analysis, this paper identifies several key elements involved in the growth of K-pop. It does not attempt to determine the major reasons for the success of K-pop, and/or the failure (or low degree of popularity) of J-pop in global markets. Instead, it comparatively discusses several major features—including idol production systems, copyright issues, and hybridity—of these two popular music genres, thereby mapping out J-pop’s influences and the remnants of such influences in the K-pop sphere, as well as the ways in which K-pop has become a model for J-pop. It aims to investigate the contemporary cultural stages and transition of popular music in Korea occurring within the unfolding logic of cultural globalization, known as hybridization.
