The owner of Dinuba Energy is looking for one or more manufacturing businesses to locate next to the electric plant and willing to contract to buy power from the plant. Two cousins with a lifetime of crafting experience have brought a popular DIY workshop franchise to Fresno, and it’s being met with success. Located at 1134 E. Champlain Dr., the AR Workshop studio opened less than two months ago, and it’s been well-received, with five to six classes being taught a week — they’re also getting repeat customers. At AR, customers are given the chance to make their own boutique goods for their homes, with classes on such items as wooden signs, lazy susans, cen- terpiece boxes and pillows. Cus- tomers are also able to customize what they make. The AR franchise traces its ori- gins to the design company An- ders Ruff, founded in Pineville, North Carolina, in 2010 by Mau- reen Anders and Adria Ruff, who became friends after meeting at a preschool open house. After six years, they started AR Work- shop, having received numerous requests to teach others how to make their own DIY projects. The AR Workshop in Fresno came into being through the ef- forts of cousins Leigh Champlin, a retired teacher, and Michelle Bentzen, a retired communica- tions and marketing specialist. Champlin learned about the AR franchise from a friend and ven- tured to their location in Ros- eville, and was immediately im- pressed and noted a lack of work- shops like this in the Fresno area. Champlin joined Bentzen in opening up Fresno to the busi- ness. In addition to their day jobs, both of them have a lifetime of crafting experience under their belts. “Both of us have always loved CONTRIBUTED | From left, AR Workshop franchisors Michelle Bentzen and Leigh Champlin have brought the DIY spirit to Fresno with their new business. interior design and décor, and crafting of all types — scrapbook- “We have experienced crafters as ing and everything,” Bentzen said. well as people who’ve never crafted “So this kind of fell in line with and think they aren’t crafty at all,” what we both have already en- she said. “And what’s fabulous about joyed doing for so long.” us is we walk them through ev- As for their customers, their ery single step, and they leave with level of experience ranges from something that’s beautiful that they experts to beginners. AGRICULTURE lations Board finally counted votes cast by nearly 2,000 Gerawan Farming employees. And the results essentially were as many expected, with the Reedley-based company’s workers voting overwhelmingly to break ties with the United Farm Workers union. Specifically, the vote came out to 1,098 voting to decertify the union and 197 voting to stay with the union, an outcome that drew applause from some Gerawan workers and others who supported the no union vote gathered at the Hugh Burns State Building Au- ditorium in downtown Fresno for the nearly four-hour vote count. The ballot count came after a lengthy legal battle in which the union claimed, among other things, that the challenge to the UFW representing about 2,600 Gerawan field and packinghouse workers in Fresno County was initiated by the company and the company worked to influence the outcome of the election. Gerawan officials denied those claims, stressing that the workers were among the best paid agricultural workers in the Valley and didn’t want to lose 3 percent of their salaries paying dues to a union that had essentially disappeared after the workers voted to join in the 1990s and didn’t show up again until 2013. While the state Supreme Court ruled last week that the worker votes had to be count- ed, “the court also said that you have to take into consideration all the activity leading up to the election [in] whether to certify the election.” That means this matter may not have ended with this week’s vote count, as the ALRB still has to certify the results, according to a written statement by the UFW. anticipates it continuing for another year or two. And it takes the same amount of time to train someone coming straight out of school. That creates an employee’s market, where business owners compete for labor. Firms like Lawrence Engineering Group and Paul Halajian, Inc. are turning down work due to the sheer volume. “We could all work 18 hours a day all week long, but that is not conducive to keeping an employee,” said Carlson. “We’re very careful to manage that and that is keeping us back.” That could mean contract dollars lost to outside firms. But getting workers to meet those needs from outside the area is expensive. Firms can’t charge clients what they can in the Bay Area or in Los Angeles, and thus can’t offer the medical or retirement benefits that large firms can. Even considering the low cost-of-living, “no one likes taking a pay cut,” said Carlson. Paul Halajian Architects offers a full benefits package and 401k through a human resources company to make their salaries on par with Fortune 500 companies, said Halajian. PRESIDENT CENTRAL VALLEY PROFESSIONALS (FRESNO CHAPTER OF EXPERIENCE UNLIMITED)

Tell us about Central Valley Professionals Central Valley Professionals (CVP) is the Fresno chapter of the California Employment Development Department’s (EDD) Experience Unlimited “job clubs.” The concept of these chapters was first introduced in 1959 in Berkeley and subsequently expanded, with 15 chapters statewide. CVP is the chapter serving Madera, Fresno and Tulare counties. CVP works with a wide range of professional, technical, and managerial job seekers who participate in this voluntary networking group to lend one another job-hunting assistance and direction. We provide workshops on job search strategies, resumes, interview techniques and networking, along with access to online job listings, networking opportunities, special events and guest speakers. Participants also can use CVP’s computers, printers, copiers, telephones, fax machine and Internet access. All members are assigned to committees that meet weekly to provide evaluations on participants’ resumes, conduct mock interviews and assist with technology questions. There are no fees for the job seekers or the employers. A CVP alumnus continues to have access to all CVP services and is considered a resource to our organization, which includes offering knowledge of job opportunities, contributing to workshops and other support. How did you become involved with CVP? I learned of CVP in October 2017 after I resigned from my last employer.
