West Oxfordshire District Council Election Results Notices of Poll Oxfordshire County Council Elections on Thursday 6 May 2021 This document consists of the “Notice of Poll” for each of the 10 electoral divisions of the Oxfordshire County Council in which there are elections on Thursday 6 May, and which are within the district of West Oxfordshire.     New Discoveries of Neolithic Pottery in Oxfordshire By E. T. LEEDS NDER the heading Early Man in the recently published Volume I of U the Victoria History of Oxfordshire (p. 242) some attention was paid to discoveries of Neolithic pottery within the county, naturally with particu­ lar reference to similar discoveries in adjacent counties. Much of the material there reviewed, consisting of old finds; like the fine bowls from the River Thames at Mongewell, stray sherds from Asthall, spoons from Swell, Gloucestershire, sherds from Buston Farm, Astrop, Northamptonshire, and the large mass of pottery from Abingdon, Berkshire, has already been fully published elsewhere, and references to the pertinent literature were given. Some notice was also taken of more recent discoveries at Cassington and Stanton Harcourt, with an illustration of one piece from each of those places. The scope of that publication however, did not permit of more than a summary account of these later dis­ coveries, and it has seemed desirable that they should be recorded in fuller detail, not only because the pottery in question is rare in occurrence anywhere, but also because it includes material which may have a distinct bearing on the history and development of Bronze Age ceramic in this country. Three classes of Neolithic pottery are, as is well known, now recognised: I. Neolithic A, or Windmill Hill, to give it its older title, a southern group, chiefly known from the Wiltshire site, near Avebury. To this belongs the material from the occupation-site at Abingdon, representing a secondary phase of its development, as recorded also from other sites, such as Hembury Fort, Devon, and Whitehawk Hill, Sussex.

    Beakers of the Upper Thames District by E. T. LEEDS N his review of British beakers in the first of his two volumes on Bronze Age Pottery Lord Abercromby cited seven examples from the Oxford district, I obviously not a very substantial foundation upon which to build up theories about their origins or their relationship to neighbouring groups: all the less so, because, as his maps show, the Oxford group stands divided from the other main groups in every direction by considerable intervals, whether in North­ amptonshire, Cambridgeshire, or even the Lower Thames Valley and Wiltshire. Nevertheless any beakers found round Oxford must from their centrality derive from one or other direction, and actually Lord Abercromby detected in most of them secondary phases of the two main classes A and B, classes which still hold good for general purposes of differentiation. As is well known, Lord Abercromby placed the starting-point of the diffu­ sion of beaker-pottery in England in the south, particularly in Wiltshire, and traced its spread in a northerly and north-easterly direction. Since that time (1912), however, many doubts have been expressed about the correctness of Lord Abercromby's deductions,' and the belief that the chief point of arrival of a part at least of the invaders was by the east coast has gradually asserted itself.2 The scarcity of material from the Oxford district was explained by Lord Abercromby as being due to the inhospitable nature of much of the country (forest, marsh, clay, etc.) which deterred man from settling on it,' but, if any justification were needed for the more intensive research of recent years into the prehistoric archaeology of the district, it lies in the possibility of removing the false impression which he was led to present about conditions in the Upper Thames Valley in the Early Bronze Age.
