Oakville Blades players, both past and present, will test their skills this weekend against NHL-caliber competition. The Blades will officially celebrate their 40th anniversary Saturday at Dominion Twin Rinks with an alumni game against a squad of Maple Leafs alumni and other former NHL stars. The first 30-minute period will fea- ture Blades of the past against the ex-NHLers, with this year’s Blades team taking the ice for the final half of the con- test. “Being our 40th anniversary, we wanted to make this a special evening, to pay tribute and honour the former Blades,” said Don Edwards, head coach and general manag- er of the local Provincial Junior A Hockey League team. “A way to do this was to incorporate them into the game and have them playing against someone sort of special, and with Leaf Nation all over southern , we thought this might be the best way to do it. “To keep the tradition alive between the alumni and the current Blades, the 2006-07 version will play in the second half,” he continued. “That way, we are promoting the (cur- rent) Oakville Blades, too. It ties in well.” Edwards, a former NHL all-star goaltender, will take to the ice for the Leaf alumni. He will be joined by such play- ers as Gary Leeman, Peter Zezel, Pat Boutette, Jack Valiquette, Tom Fergus, Jim Jones, Terry Clancy, Bob McGill, Dan Daoust, Bill Derlago, Mike Pelyk, Jim Sandlak, BARRIE ERSKINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER Craig Muni, Richie Dunn, Darryl Shannon and Dean DENIED: Oakville Wings goaltender Nathan Young stretches out to make a pad save against Brampton Snipers player Kyle DeFazio.
