Devon Lay Subsidy Rolls 1543 – 1545 (Edited by T L Stoate)

This is a CD of the surviving Subsidy Rolls of Devon, but does not include Exeter, because its 1544 roll has been transcribed by Mrs Rowe in the "Tudor Exeter" (Devon and Cornwall Record Society. Volume 22, 1977). There are many thousands of people listed usually giving their parish and the value that the person is assessed at. Fully

Devon Lay Subsidy Rolls 1524 – 1527 (Edited by T L Stoate)

The Subsidy rolls of 1524 - 27 are, with a few exceptions, the first taxation lists giving the names of the inhabitants since the subsidy of 1332. This transcript was edited and published by T.L. Stoate. It names all of those on the Roll along with their class of taxation.

The Devon Muster Roll for 1569 (Edited by T L Stoate and A J Howard)

On March 26th 1569 the Council issued a directive to the counties to hold a general muster of all men over 16, appointing commissioners in each county. Certificates of the muster, with the names of the men and their equipment, were to be returned by July 1st though this was later extended to August 12th. This CD contains a searchable

transcript for Devon of this Muster.

Gems in a Granite Setting (William Crossing)

Anyone who has previously taken an interest in the life and history of Dartmoor will be familiar with the names of Beatrice Chase and Sabine Bearing-Gould. One other must also be added to this illustrious list and that is William Crossing. He is now considered one of the best authorities on Dartmoor and its antiquities, having made it the subject of his life's work and his writings being as popular, and relevant, today as they have ever been.

Numerous subjects, photographs and locations are covered in the book. Some of these are Sir Thomas Wise, Black Tor Copse in the Seventeenth Century, Lustleigh Cleave, the Bovey Tracey River, the Manor of Spitchwick and many others.

Historical Records Of the 1st Devon Militia (4th Batt. Devon Reg) (Colonel H Walrond)

This book published in 1897 traces the history of the regiment from its earliest origins to 1896. Its 400+ pages are divided into chronological sections that give a great deal of information as to the location of the company and the day to day activities. There are a number of illustrations and the appendix gives lists of various ranks and officers.
