Yates, Ph.D. Introduction Timothy Polk has noted, “Nothing distinguishes the book of Jeremiah from earlier works of prophecy quite so much as the attention it devotes to the person of the prophet and the prominence it accords the prophetic ‘I’, and few things receive more scholarly comment.”1 More than simply providing a biographical or psychological portrait of the prophet, the book presents Jeremiah as a theological symbol who embodies in his person the word of Yahweh and the office of prophet. 2 In fact, the figure of Jeremiah is so central that a theology of the book of Jeremiah “cannot be formulated without taking into account the person of the prophet, as the book presents him.”3 The purpose of this study is to explore how Jeremiah the person functions as a theological symbol and what these motifs contribute to the overall theology of the book of Jeremiah. -

Garland Dean, Baylor School of Social Work and Vicki Marsh Kabat Master of Social Work Student Power and the Christian © 2009 Baylor University School of Social Work Introduction to the Study: Dynamics of Power As Christians, we are richly steeped in lessons about servanthood. Stories of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet and of Jesus coming down from heaven to take on human flesh paint a beautiful picture of what it means to be a Christian. We understand that we are called to serve others. What we have less instruction in is how to live as persons with power and how that informs servanthood. How are we to wield power in appropriate, gospel‐directed ways? No problem, you say, because you don’t have any power to wield? That’s not true. Whether you are a boss, supervisor, teacher, coach, pastor, deacon, PTA president, Bible study leader, or parent, you have power. One reason we haven’t studied the dynamics of power as much is because the word itself prompts images and emotions that are often negative. People just aren’t comfortable talking about power; it’s such a loaded word. “Power” simply means having the ability to influence the behavior of another person. As children, we did school homework whether it made sense to us or not, because the teacher was the one in authority—she had the power. On the athletic team, we ran laps because a coach said to do so. When a parent sat us in the corner for punishment, we sat there. -

Welcome back! Pastor Gerber again. Do you remember what the first 5 books of the Bible are? They are called the Torah or Pentateuch. Written by Moses. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. The next section in the Bibles is called the history books of the Old Testament. Do you remember how many books are in the history section? 12. Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1st and 2nd Samuel, 1st and 2nd Kings, 1st and 2nd Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther. Today we’re going to skim over the surface of each of these books. We can’t do them much justice, though, in just a few minutes. So, I encourage you to pick one or two of them and quickly read through them. Some are shorter than others. I suggest Ruth and Esther. They are stories that basically stand on their own, they aren’t very long, and they’re really interesting. So, let’s get into our overview of these books. When we left off in Deuteronomy, Moses has just died. That’s right where Joshua picks up. Remember, before Moses died, Joshua took over the command of the Israelite people. We see that taking place in the beginning of the book. Joshua takes over and brings the Israelites into the Promised Land. Foreigners had settled on their land and the Israelites have to use a lot of force to drive these foreigners out of the land that God had promised to the Israelites. Many of these nations are completely destroyed in these wars. Can you think of a battle from Joshua that you remember from Sunday School? Joshua fit the battle of Jericho! Well, not all battles went as easily as the battle of Jericho. -

Of Malachi Studies of the Old Testament's Ethical Dimensions
ABSTRACT The Moral World(s) of Malachi Studies of the Old Testament’s ethical dimensions have taken one of three approaches: descriptive, systematic, or formative. Descriptive approaches are concerned with the historical world, social context, and streams of tradition out of which OT texts developed and their diverse moral perspectives. Systematic approaches investigate principles and paradigms that encapsulate the unity of the OT and facilitate contemporary appropriation. Formative approaches embrace the diversity of the OT ethical witnesses and view texts as a means of shaping the moral imagination, fostering virtues, and forming character The major phase of this investigation pursues a descriptive analysis of the moral world of Malachi—an interesting case study because of its location near the end of the biblical history of Israel. A moral world analysis examines the moral materials within texts, symbols used to represent moral ideals, traditions that helped shape them, and the social world (political, economic, and physical) in which they are applied. This study contributes a development to this reading methodology through a categorical analysis of moral foundations, expectations, motives, and consequences. This moral world reading provides insight into questions such as what norms and traditions shaped the morals of Malachi’s community? What specific priorities, imperatives, and injunctions were deemed important? How did particular material, economic, and political interests shape moral decision-making? How did religious symbols bring together their view of the world and their social values? The moral world reading is facilitated by an exploration of Malachi’s social and symbolic worlds. Social science data and perspectives are brought together from an array of sources to present six important features of Malachi’s social world. -

Andrews Honors Thesis Andrews University College of Arts & Sciences Title: THE CHRONOLOGY OF THE EVENTS IN ZECHARIAH 12-14 Author’s Name: Won Jin Jeon Advisor: Rahel Schafer, PhD Completion Date: March 2016 In current scholarship, there is a lack of consensus on the timing of the specific events in Zechariah 12-14, with a focus on eschatological or sequential chronologies. Preliminary exegetical research has revealed many connections between the three chapters. For instance, the occurs 17 times (versus four times in the rest of Zechariah). This (ביום־ההוא) ”phrase “in that day concentrated usage closely interconnects the three chapters and suggests that the timeliness of all of the events is in close succession.
