WADESTOWN SCHOOL XXCommunity Newsletter No 2 Acting Principal: Ian Hastie Website: www.wadestown.school.nz Thursday 20th February 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians, Well done to all students on a very positive start to the school year. I have been very impressed with student willingness to work alongside teachers in their classrooms; Playground interaction is positive and very active. There are many sports games being played in all areas of school and I have been impressed with how students interact with each other and in groups. Well done Wadestown students!! Looking forward to seeing you all at the School Picnic tomorrow night between 5.30 – 7.30 pm. I have been told that this is a great occasion for staff and community to mix and of course, it is a special school picnic this year with it being Sally’s last. Thank you to the PTA for all the work you are doing for the picnic. The staff are looking forward to meeting with you at our scheduled Parent Teacher One to One Conferences. Sallybration Afternoon Tea for Ex-Students and Friends On Friday last week we kicked off our Sallybration events with an open afternoon where ex-students and friends of Wadestown School could visit the playground and classes. Some Wadestown School students were ambassadors for the school and hosted our guests. This was followed by a lovely afternoon tea and speeches by Sally Barrett and Nick Julian. There were approximately 200 visitors that afternoon. Thank you to the Sallybration organising team for the lovely food and excellent organisation of this event. Sallybration Student Ambassadors Ex-students and friends of Wadestown School with Sally Coronavirus Update Wadestown School has received a further update from the Ministry of Education regarding the Coronavirus. As at 13th February 2020 there were no confirmed cases of Coronavirus in New Zealand, although the Ministry of Health do anticipate that at some stage this will occur. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health are well prepared for such an eventuality and Wadestown School will be following the advice of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education should the situation arise. Please do continue to refer to the Ministry of Health’s information page on their website. It will be updated as new information comes to hand. https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and- conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus School Orchestra The Wadestown School orchestra, run by Rupa Maitra and Pip Honore, has been in existence at the school for 7 years. The orchestra rehearses every Wednesday at lunchtime in Room 8 at the Rose St site. Over the years, the orchestra has performed at the House and Garden Walk fundraiser, for the Wadestown Wilton Horticultural Society Flower Shows and before the WCC Young People's Arts Festival in the foyer of the Michael Foyer Centre each year. We also perform to the school students at regular intervals during the year. If your child can play an instrument and is interested in joining the Wadestown School Orchestra they would be most welcome. Please email Rupa at [email protected] or speak to Lydia Harris (Classroom teacher, Room 12) who will be taking over Pip’s role in the school orchestra this year. News from the Library Our librarian Derek Piper is back from his year in Cambodia. He would love to hear from anybody who might be available during the year to cover new books and help with other library-related tasks.
