A Revision of the North American Species of Apios (Fabaceae)

JUNE 2005 A Revision of the North American Species of Apios (Fabaceae) MICHAEL WOODS* Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Troy University, Troy, Alabama 36082 ABSTRACT The revision of Apios in North America is based on morphological analysis of herbarium specimens as well as field and greenhouse observations. The genus is herein recognized as consisting of two distinct species in North America. Apios priceana was described by Robinson in 1898. Currently it is listed as threatened by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and is known from 47 populations in 22 counties in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee. The other species, A. americana, widely distributed in eastern North America, was first described by Cornut in 1633 and has been regarded as consisting of six infraspecific taxa, which are not recognized in the present treatment. Demarcation is based primarily on reproductive features as vegetative characteristics, both within and between species, exhibits a significant amount of variation. In addition to the taxonomic descriptions, dichotomous keys, illustrations and distribution maps are presented for each species. INTRODUCTION Apios Fabricius (Fabaceae) occurs in Asia and North America. The Asian species are represented by three specific and two infraspecific taxa. Prior to this treatment, Apios was represented in North American by two specific and six infraspecific taxa (Woods 1988). Taxonomic History of Apios The genus Apios was named by Cornut (1633) when he described A. americana. Linnaeus (1753) brought A. americana into the modern era of botanical nomenclature when he listed it as a synonym for Glycine apios. The first revision of Apios after Linnaeus was by Fabricius (1759), who recognized A. -

LUNCEFORD _____________________ Date____________________ Environmental Coordinator for Mississippi, US Fish and Wildlife Service Homochitto Ranger District Page 1 BIOLOGICAL Evaluation Analysis Uint 23 9/13/2010 Introduction This Biological Evaluation (BE) documents the likely impacts on proposed, endangered, threatened, and sensitive (TES) species from forest management activities proposed for Analysis Unit 23. AU 23 is located in Amite and Wilkinson counties, Mississippi and is part of the Foster Creek subwatershed in the Homochitto River basin.. As a result of a recent court decision, Forest Plan Amendment # 16 and the Region 8 Supplement to FSM 2670 are no longer in effect. This BE follows the process used to decide when to inventory for TES species that is consistent with the requirement found in the Vegetation Management EIS for the Coastal Plain and Piedmont. This BE is in accordance with direction given in Forest Service Manual (FSM) 2672 to meet the 1989 Vegetation Management standard. As part of the NEPA decision making process, the BE provides a review of Forest Service (FS) activities in sufficient detail to determine how an action will affect any TES species. TES species, taken from both state and federal lists, are species whose viability is most likely to be put at risk from management actions. -
Apios Americana Medik
Apios americana Medik. Common Names: Groundnut, Wild Bean, Potato-bean, American Potato Bean, Indian-potato (1, 4, 7). Etymology: Apios is Greek for “pear”; the plant was named such because of its pear-shaped tubers. Americana means “American” (3, 7, 17). Botanical synonyms: Apios tuberosa (4), Glycine apios (14). FAMILY: Fabaceae (the Pea family). Fabaceae is also known as Leguminosae Quick Notable Features: ¬ Purple-brown flowers in axillary racemes ¬ Papilionaceous (butterfly-like) corolla ¬ Stem and leaves are unarmed ¬ Pinnately compound leaves with 5-7 ovate to lanceolate leaflets per leaf, each leaflet with a round (not C- shaped) petiolule Plant Height: Climbing individuals grow up to 5m long (4). Subspecies/varieties recognized (11): Apios americana f. cleistogama Fernald Apios americana f. pilosa Steyerm. Apios americana f. keihneri Oswald Apios americana var. turrigera Fernald Apios americana f. mcculloughii Oswald Most Likely Confused with: Apios priceana, Wisteria frutescens and Wisteria sinensis, Amphicarpaea bracteata, Desmodium rotundifolium, Strophostyles helvola, as well as the species in the genera Lathyrus, Rubus, and Coronilla. Habitat PreFerence: A. americana can grow in partial or no shade (5). It prefers low and moist woods, thickets, stream and riverbanks, ponds, marshes, meadows, and wet ravines (1, 4). Geographic Distribution in Michigan: Located in 32 counties of the Lower Peninsula, nearly all in the southern half, and in Mackinac, Delta, and Menominee counties of the Upper Peninsula (1). Known Elevational Distribution: Groundnut can be found cultivated up to elevations of 1000m (16). Complete Geographic Distribution: Native to the eastern United and Canada. A. americana is found in every state east of and including Colorado, and in Quebec and Ontario in Canada (14). -

ECHO Development Notes (EDN) | EDN Issue #151 Apios americana Michelle Boutell Apios americana is a climbing, perennial vine and a member of the legume (Fabaceae) family. Common names for this crop include apios, ground nut, wild bean, bog potato, wild potato, Virginia potato, Indian potato, and wild bean. The plant, native to eastern parts of North America, was widely cultivated by Native Americans for its edible tubers and beans. It has grown well in the subtropical climate of ECHO’s Global Farm in southwest Florida (Sobetski, 2021). Its preference for trellis support makes it more difficult to grow on a field scale than a root crop like cassava (Manihot esculenta); however, A. americana is well-suited for small plantings around the home, producing protein-rich tubers that can be cooked in multiple ways. Source: Holly Sobetski Uses Many legumes are grown as green manure/cover crops, but A. americana is primarily cultivated for its starchy tubers that are an excellent source of carbohydrates and protein (Figure 8; Table 2). A. americana roots have more protein than other root crops shown in Table 2, and the protein in A. americana roots contains all the amino acids essential to human health (Neacsu et al., 2021). 1 / 5 Table 2. GENERAL INFORMATION A. Methodology used to complete the review -- In conducting this 5-year review, we relied on the best available information pertaining to historic and current distributions, life history, and habitat of this species. Our sources include the final rule listing this species under the Endangered Species Act; the recovery plan; unpublished field observations by Service, State, US Forest Service, and other experienced biologists; unpublished survey reports; and notes and communications from other qualified biologists or experts. We published an announcement of this review in the Federal Register and requested information about this species on July 6, 2009 (74 FR 31972), and a 60-day comment period was opened. Comments received and suggestions from peer reviewers were evaluated and incorporated as appropriate (see Appendix A). No part of this review was contracted to an outside party.
