When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing.

Especially in 2019, it is viewed as a highly polarized sector of society sometimes hostile to those on the right side of the aisle. But just because the majority of those who work in Hollywood are liberal, that doesn’t necessarily mean our entertainment follows suit. I argue in my thesis that entertainment in Hollywood is far less partisan than people think it is and moreover, that our entertainment represents plenty of conservative themes and ideas. In doing so, I look at a combination of markets and artistic demands that restrain the politics of those in the entertainment industry and even create space for more conservative productions. Although normally art and markets are thought to be in tension with one another, in this case, they conspire to make our entertainment less one-sided politically.

  • 2009 Global Press Release
TV fans to raise $150,000 for Charity at the 4th Annual "Can't Stop The Serenity" Worldwide Movie Screenings Between May and September 2009, fans of popular cult television and film writer/ director Joss Whedon, will gather worldwide to raise money for "Equality Now," a charity dedicated to promoting the human rights of beleaguered women and girls. Worldwide (CSTS) May 7th, 2009 - For the fourth year in a row, thousands of people around the world will participate in “Can’t Stop the Serenity” fund-raising events to benefit "Equality Now," a charity organization working to protect the basic human rights of women and girls across the planet. Since 2006, more than a quarter of a million dollars has been raised and they plan to add another $150,000 in 2009. Who is behind this phenomenon? It’s not the product of any formal action network like Equality Now, a relief group or even a foundation. These humanitarians aren't even a group of rich philanthropists or celebrities. They are simply the fans of a prematurely canceled sci-fi television series called "Firefly" and its climactic movie, "Serenity". The volunteers who organize these charitable events, without prompting from the show’s creators or Equality Now, have created a worldwide event that spans three continents. This annual celebration of equality and Joss Whedon’s birthday is known as "Can't Stop the Serenity," and the men and women behind it are simply known as "Browncoats" after the heroes of the show. Says Amanda Sullivan, director of Equality Now: “Amazing as it is, we are heading into our fourth season of CSTS global screenings! It is a difficult time for us and a difficult time for everyone right now.

FIREFLY 3.10 3.10 Zombies, Reavers, Butchers, and Actuals in Joss Whedon's Work Gerry Canavan For all the standard horror movie monsters Joss Whedon took up in Buffy and Angel-vampires, of course, but also ghosts, demons, werewolves, witches, Frankenstein's monster, the Devil, mummies, haunted puppets, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the "bad boyfriend," and so on-you'd think there would have been more zombies. In twelve years of television across both series zombies appear in only a handful of episodes. They attack almost as an afterthought at Buffy's drama-laden homecoming party early in Buffy Season 3 ("Dead Man's Party" 3.2); they completely ruin Xander's evening in "The Zeppo" (3.13) later that same season; they patrol Angel's Los Angeles neighborhood in "The Thin Dead Line" (2.14) in Angel Season 2; they stalk the halls of Wolfram & Hart in "Habeas Corpses" (4.8) in Angel Season 4. A single zombie comes back from the dead to work things out with the girlfriend who poisoned him in a subplot in "Provider" (3.12) in Angel Season 3; Adam uses science to reanimate dead bodies to make his lab assistants near the end of Buffy Season 4 ("Primeval" 4.21); zombies guard a fail-safe device in the basement of Wolfram & Hart in "You're Welcome" (3.12) in Angel Season 5.

More Than Digital Makeup: The Visual Effects Industry as Hollywood Diaspora By Sarah K. Hellström Department of Cinema Studies Master’s Thesis 15 hp Master Course 30 hp, VT 2013 Supervisor: Dr. Patrick Vonderau If I hear one more person who comes up to me and complains about [how]‘computer-music has no soul’ then I will go furious, you know. ‘Cause of course the computer is just a tool. And if there is no soul in computer-music then it's because nobody put it there and that's not the computers role, it's the role of the songwriter. He puts down his soul in the song if he wants to. A guitar will never write a song and a computer will never write a song, these are just tools.i - Björk Title: More Than Digital Makeup: The Visual Effects Industry as Hollywood Diaspora Author’s name: Sarah K. Hellström Supervisor: Dr. Patrick Vonderau Abstract This thesis assesses the marginal field (niche unit) of visual effects while taking into account visible and invisible vfx in virtual and actual geographies in Hollywood movies as part of industry-level studies, all the while seeking to bridge the gap between traditional, theoretical approaches of cinema studies and practitioner experience in the context of production culture. The focus of this essay remains on the many temporal aspects of production processes that identify vfx film production as chief, and vfx for television as subsequential. Encouraging scholars to consider a previously limited and repeatedly mislabeled area by demonstrating the pandemic presence of effects and its workers as a form of Hollywood diaspora, this thesis also seeks to demonstrate the need for involvement by means of scholar-practitioner methodologies.

Email: [email protected] JOSS WHEDON, DR. HORRIBLE AND THE FUTURE OF WEB MEDIA? 2 Abstract In the 2007 Writers Guild of America strike, one of the areas in dispute was the question of residual payments for online material. On the picket line, Buffy creator Joss Whedon discussed new ways online media production could be financed. After the strike, Whedon self-funded a web media production, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog. Whedon and his collaborators positioned Dr. Horrible as an experiment, investigating whether original online media content created outside of studio funding could be financially viable. Dr. Horrible was a bigger hit than expected, with a paid version topping the iTunes charts and a DVD release hitting the number two position on Amazon. This article explores which factors most obviously contributed to Dr. Horrible’s success, whether these factors are replicable by other media creators, the incorporation of fan labor into web media projects, and how web-specific content creation relates to more traditional forms of media production. In November 2007, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) began a strike lasting 100 days; amongst the areas in dispute were questions of residual payments for online streaming of previously broadcast material and the even newer and murkier territory of content created specifically for viewing online (M.

It is a work of advanced nerdism whereby freaks and geeks become aware of their capacity for self-and-world-defense. Here, nerd culture considers what new tropes, plots, and characters are necessary to resist the Powers of predation and eugenics. Buffy figures these forces as demonic Powers in the Pauline sense: the spirits of broken social institutions that attempt to destroy the nerd. Chief among these demons is Gender, the system of norms that dictates what good boys and girls must do to please the Powers. The story of the Slayer begins with a solitary female messiah doomed to destroy vampires and be destroyed in turn; it evolves into a narrative of alliance in which rejected children defend the world by moving into the queer, the uncanny, and the monstrous. Buffy’s creator, Joss Whedon, extended his exploration of the effluvial and the degenerate through his space Western, Firefly/ Serenity, in which a band of misfits uncovers a government conspiracy to hide the poisoning of a planet, Miranda.

Reviewed by Amy H. Sturgis. [This review originally appeared in Mythlore 27.3/4 (#105/106) (2009): 171–72.] What do Earth-bound vampire slayers and cowboys in space have in common? In her new book about the worlds of Joss Whedon, K. Dale Koontz suggests that the answer is far deeper and more meaningful than witty writing and impressive special effects alone. Koontz is not the first author to analyze Joss Whedon’s Buffy universe (consisting of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel television series and their related texts) together with his Firefly universe (consisting of the Firefly television series, the film Serenity , and their related texts); some of those who anticipated her include J. Michael Richardson and J. Douglas Rabb with their book Existential Joss Whedon: Evil and Human Freedom in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Serenity (McFarland: 2006) and Joy Davidson with her edited collection The Psychology of Joss Whedon: An Unauthorized Exploration of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly (BenBella: 2007). In Faith and Choice in the Works of Joss Whedon , however, Koontz also considers Whedon’s eight-issue comic series Fray , a futuristic tale related to but independent from the Buffy universe, thus expanding the landscape of Whedon studies.
