2009 Players Biel International Chess Festival Players Boris Gelfand Israel, 41 yo Elo: 2755 World ranking: 9 Date and place of birth: 24.6.1968, in Minsk (Belarus) Lives in: Rishon-le-Zion (Israel) Israel ranking: 1 Best world ranking: 3 (January 1991) In Biel GMT: winner in 1993 (Interzonal) and 2005. Other results: 3rd (1995, 1997, 2001), 4th (2000) Two Decades at the Top of Chess This is not a comeback, since Boris Gelfand never left the chess elite in the last twenty years. However, at the age of 41, the Israeli player has reached a new peak and is experiencing a a third wind. He is back in the world Top-10, officially as number 9 (in fact, a virtual number 5, if one takes into account his latest results that have not yet been recorded). He had not been ranked so high since 2006. Age does not seem to matter for this player who is unanimously appreciated in the field, both for his technical prowess and his personality. In Biel, he will not only be the senior player of the Grandmaster tournament, but also the top ranked and the Festival’s most loyal participant. Since his first appearance in 1993, he has come seven times to Biel; it is precisely at this Festival that he earned one of his greatest victories: in 1993, he finished first in the Interzonal Tournament (which, by then, was the only qualifying competition for the world championship), out of 73 participating grandmasters (including Anand and Kramnik). His victory in Biel against Anand is mentioned in his book, My Most Memorable Games.

  • FIDE Trainers Committee V22.1.2005
FIDE Training! Don’t miss the action! by International Master Jovan Petronic Chairman, FIDE Computer & Internet Chess Committee In 1998 FIDE formed a powerful Committee comprising of leading chess trainers around the chess globe. Accordingly, it was named the FIDE Trainers Committee, and below, I will try to summarize the immense useful information for the readers, current major chess training activities and appeals of the Committee, etc. Among their main tasks in the period 1998-2002 were FIDE licensing of chess trainers and the recognition of these by the International Olympic Committee, benefiting in the long run, to all chess federations, trainers and their students. The proven benefits of playing and studying chess have led to countries, such as Slovenia, introducing chess into their compulsory school curiccullum! The ASEAN Chess Academy, headed by FIDE Vice President, FM, IA & IO - Ignatius Leong, has organized from November 7th to 14th 2003 - a Training Course under the auspices of FIDE and the International Olympic Committee! IM Nikola Karaklajic from Serbia & Montenegro provided the training. The syllabus was targeted for middle and lower levels. At the time, the ASEAN Chess Academy had a syllabus for 200 lessons of 90 minutes each! I am personally proud of having completed such a Course in Singapore. You may view the official Certificate I received here. Another Trainers’ Course was conducted by FIDE and the Asean Chess Academy from 12th to 17th December 2004! Extensive testing was done, here is the list of the candidates who had passed the FIDE Trainer high criteria! The main lecturer was FIDE Senior Trainer Israel Gelfer.

  • Chess Festival
Boris Gelfand’s Remarkable Comeback Yochanan Afek reports back from the star-studded Netanya International Chess Festival A big International Festival was organised in the coastal Israeli city of Netanya by the Israeli Chess Federation and the local municipality, supported by the generosity of businessman Roman Abramovich, likely best known to the readers as the owner of Chelsea Football Club. It has been quite a while since Netanya last hosted a strong international chess event, but the city has a long and respectable tradition of grandmaster tournaments. They were initially part of the popular Schach-Kait (Chess & Holiday) festival. Over the years various master tournaments were held as well as many editions of a grandmaster crown group, whose winners included the world- class icons Bobby Fischer (1968), Sammy Reshevsky (1969), Lubomir Kavalek (1971 and 1973), and Jan Timman (1975), as well as local heroes Yair Kraidman (1964) and Moshe Czerniak (1965). Played in the VIP room of the city’s Ilya Smirin might be in his fifties, but still produces plenty of attacking and exciting games. football stadium and consisting of two major sections, this year’s edition of the Netanya International Festival was both the biggest beaten in just 25 moves by Tamir Nabaty, 66 g5! Îh4+ 67 Êf3 Îxh5 68 Îxe3+ Êd4 and the strongest individual event ever to be who thus claimed the overall lead despite 69 Îe4+ Êd5 70 Îa4! (this skewer is the held in Israel. The remarkable production was having missed a study-like opportunity in the tactical device that was missed; naturally, superbly run by an experienced team headed opening round.

  • Ranking by Pairwise Comparisons for Swiss-System Tournaments
Ranking by pairwise comparisons for Swiss-system tournaments L´aszl´oCsat´o∗ August 28, 2015 Abstract Pairwise comparison matrices are widely used in Multicriteria Decision Making. This article applies incomplete pairwise comparison matrices in the area of sport tournaments, namely proposing alternative rankings for the 2010 Chess Olympiad Open tournament. It is shown that results are robust regarding scaling technique. In order to compare different rankings, a distance function is introduced with the aim of taking into account the subjective nature of human perception. Analysis of the weight vectors implies that methods based on pairwise comparisons have common roots. Visualization of the results is provided by Multidimensional Scaling on the basis of the defined distance. The proposed rankings give in some cases intuitively better outcome than currently used lexicographical orders. Keywords: Multicriteria decision making, Incomplete pairwise comparison matrix, Rank- ing for Swiss-system tournaments, Multidimensional Scaling 1 Introduction There are some sport tournaments where the ranking of the competitors is based on the results of games played against each other. In the world of sport there is no consensus in using a particular ranking method. Various evaluation methods have been applied to different events taking into account the specifics of the particular sport activity. Further complication emerges when participants are teams, and the final ranking should also reflect individual results. One characteristic example for that situation is a chess team championship. In this article it is assumed that the final ranking of participants of a sport tournament is based on the outcome of the games that have been played against each other.
