Dec. 5, 1964 Dear Mrs. Bankhead; In answer to appeals sent out to the teachers and students of N.Y.C. public schools (see enclosed material) Jjy the, United Federation of Teachers, one 9th grade class of Jr.H.S. 158 has agreed to "adopt" the Cleveland Freedom School. This class is interested in establishing a pen-pal correspondence with teen-age Freedom School students in Cleveland, They also indicated that they want to "help in any way we can". I sent them your name and address - given to mp by Elizabeth Fusco of the Jackson C0F0 office. Would you be able to provide them with a list of Cleveland teen-agers who would be interested in corresponding with them. Also would you let them know where they can send any supplies and materials they collect. In addition to trying to get groups to collect supplies and materials N.Y.C. for the Mississippi Freedom Schools, we have been appealing to/school faculties to "adopt" a Freedom School by contributing a monthly donation to help sustain the Freedom School program. We have "adopted" four Miss. schools under this program so far. The Cleveland school is next on the list sent to me from Jackson...so that as soon as another group of teachers respond to our appeal, I will put them in touch with you. Please let me know if you have any problems or difficulties in regard to this Adopt-A-Freedom School project. Sincerely. Norma Becker, Miss.
