EDITORIAL

Starting this month in the S/W Genealogist is our new column "Help Wanted". For a fee of $1 per name, entries can be placed in the newsletter to enlist the help of readers in our research. Replies can be made directly to the person submitting the request. Fees can be paid direct to the Area Administrator or Treasurer on meeting night, or for those out~of-towners, posted to the address given for correspondence. Hopefully this column will help some of you with those elusive ancestors!

For those who haven't heard, we now have access to the Flagstaff Hill Library on the fourth Thursday of the month. Essentially a "do it yourself research" nigh t for members and library access card holders, we plan to occasionally hold mini-tutorials on different subjects, such as "How to use the Pioneer Index on CD ROM". The library will be open between 7:30 and 10:00 on those nights (this is in addition to our meeting nights on the second Thursday of the month). Any suggestions for topics to be covered on these nights will be welcome.

Lifeline is still collecting books for their fair on Friday and Saturday 16th & 17th of June. Check out the cupboards for any books, magazines, etc that you don't want or need any more. They can be left at the Post Office, Lifeline Op shops or given to Lions Club members, or contact Elizabeth Douglas on 62 1523.

THE AREA ADMINISTRATOR'S CORNER

Dear Members and Friends,

You will be pleased to hear that my "lecture" to a group of TAFE students on the subject of Research in Genealogy went off well. They were a receptive group, and I did notice that there was a fair amount of note taking. My attitude to such a talk is - questions as you go, thus making sure of understanding before moving to another section. Family History was new to the lecturer and he could finish up working on his own family story. The talk went half an hour over the allotted time. I breathed a couple of sighs of relief on the way home.

Till next month Regards to all, Marie Boyce, Area Administrator

HANDY HINTS

Remember the ABC when writing to others for information:

A: Accuracy - make sure you check your letter before sending for any mistakes, especially with names and dates.

B: Brevity - keep it brief, not everyone has the time or inclination to wade through pages of writing. State the basics in your first letter, if further correspondence is entered into, more details can be given later.

C: Clarity - watch your handwriting, or typewrite it if necessary. I usually write my ancestors' names and dates on a line to themselves, to make it easier for the reader to scan back to the most important part.

Don' t forget the stamped self-addressed envelope when wri ting to individuals, you are more likely to get a response.

"Bibliography for Researching Irish Family History in the Victorian State Library" by Kate Press. Published by Kate Press, Malvern, 1994

In her introduction to this excellent book, author Kate Press states that "it is the result of many years of research" and this is easy to believe when you scan through the pages which are crammed with summaries of the books and other resources of use in researching Irish Family History held in the Victorian State Library.

The holdings naturally have been grouped into appropriate classifications but it doesn't end there; each classification has an introduction giving the history and background to the resources contained therein, related resources and where they can be accessed if not held by the Victorian State Library. Research hints and examples are scattered throughout the text at the appropriate points, to demonstrate the usefulness of the various records.

"A Brief Chronology of Irish History" and a "Time Line for Irish Records" is included to assist the researcher in selecting records that are available for the various periods of time.

This book is very well laid out and is very easy to read; a clear "Contents" listing, an "Index of Authors", and an "Index of Titles" make the locating of resources quick and easy. Indexes of the various Newspapers, maps and journals in the listings are also included.

In this book the author demonstrates just how much research into Irish Family History can be performed here in Victoria and the importance of the State Library of Victoria as a source of information. I for one had no idea how extensive this collection was until reading this marvellous book and recommend it highly. Everyone researching Irish Family History here in Victoria should have a copy of this groundbreaking publication in their bookshelf.

1992 LOCALITY CATALOGUE

A reminder to researchers that we have the 1992 IGI Locality catalogue on microfiche in our library. This is a very handy finding aid, to discover what records are available through the Mormon Family History Centres, for your particular parish. Listed under County, in alphabetical order, each parish is listed with the records that have been copied by the team of Latter Day Saints given this daunting job. Records that may be found include parish records (christening, marriages, burials), census records, poor law records, wills, manorial records, to name a few. Have a browse next time in the library.
