Introduction to Virginia’s Karst A presentation of The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Karst Program & Project Underground Karst - A landscape developed in limestone, dolomite, marble, or other soluble rocks and characterized by subsurface drainage systems, sinking or losing streams, sinkholes, springs, and caves. Cross-section diagram by David Culver, American University. Karst topography covers much of the Valley and Ridge Province in the western third of the state. Aerial photo of karst landscape in Russell County. Smaller karst areas also occur in the Cumberland Plateau, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain provinces. At least 29 counties support karst terrane in western Virginia. In western Virginia, karst occurs along slopes and in valleys between mountain ridges. There are few surface streams in these limestone valleys as runoff from mountain slopes disappears into the subsurface upon contact with the karst bedrock. Water flows underground, emerging at springs on the valley floor. Thin soils over fractured, cavernous limestone allow precipitation to enter the subsurface directly and rapidly, with a minimal amount of natural filtration. The purer the limestone, the less soil develops on the bedrock, leaving bare pinnacles exposed at the ground surface. Rock pinnacles may also occur where land use practices result in massive soil loss. Precipitation mixing with carbon dioxide becomes acidic as it passes through soil. Through geologic time slightly acidic water dissolves and enlarges the bedrock fractures, forming caves and other voids in the bedrock. Water follows the path of least resistance, so it moves through voids in rock layers, fractures, and boundaries between soluble and insoluble bedrock. -

The Adaptive Significance of Human Language Nathan Oesch Department of Psychology University of Tennessee, Knoxville noesch @ utk. edu Abstract Many experts have argued that human language is fundamentally incompatible with the principles of traditional Darwinian evolutionary theory. According to conventional Darwinian explanations, specific traits evolved among species according to gradual and incremental genetic changes, each of which that were in some way so favorable to the survival and reproduction of ancestral generations that they were ultimately preserved within successive generations of those species. Human language, it has been said, is simply to complex to be explained as a result of Darwinian explanations, since each successive step in the evolution of language would confer no obvious survival benefits to its recipients. According to this idea, language is such an "all-or none system," that it could not possibly have existed in any immediately beneficial intermediate forms and thus could not have evolved according to conventional Darwinian modes of explanation. -

Its primary purpose was to introduce the concept of a single-donkey ploughing system using a high-lift harness (i.e. one with a steep angle of pull -about 300 in contrast to the customary angle of 200 or less) in conjunction with a lightweight plough. This system offers reduced draught and greater efficiency compared with more 'conventional' systems. A high-lift harness and two lightweight ploughs of slightly differing constructions were taken to Bolivia for demonstration and evaluation for potential manufacture by CIFEMA. They performed convincingly, generating considerable interest in single animal working. Enthusiasm was such that on the first working day a horse was fitted with a high-lift harness and put to work with the donkey plough, confirming that the high-lift concept is equally applicable to horse use. -

Abstracts of Reports and Posters Amira Adaileh The Magdalenian site of Bad Kösen-Lengefeld The open air site of Bad Kösen-Lengefeld is located in Sachsen-Anhalt, Eastern Germany. It was discov- ered in the mid 1950´s in the immediate vicinity of the famous Magdalenian site of Saaleck. Since that time, archaeologists collected over 2000 lithic artifacts during systematical surveys. The technological and typological analyses of the lithic artifacts confirmed the assignment of Bad Kösen-Lengefeld to a late Magdalenian. Furthermore, the investigation of the surface collections brought forward information about the character of this camp site, the duration of its occupation and the pattern of raw material procure- ment. The fact that Bad Kösen-Lengefeld is located in a region with more than 100 Magdalenian sites fostered a comparison of the lithic inventory with other Magdalenian assemblages. Thus, allowing to spec- ify the position of the Lengefeld collection within the chorological context of the Magdalenian in Eastern Germany. Jehanne Affolter, Ludovic Mevel Raw material circulation in northern french alps and Jura during lateglacial interstadial : method, new data and paleohistoric implication Since fifteen years the study of the characterization and origin of flint resources used by Magdalenian and Azilian groups in northern French Alps and Jura have received significant research work. Diverse and well distributed spatially, some of these resources were used and disseminated throughout the late Upper Paleolithic. Which changes do we observe during the Magdalenian then for the Azilian? The results of petrographic analysis and techno-economic analysis to several archaeological sites allow us to assess dia- chronic changes in economic behavior of these people and discuss the significance of these results. -

TRYON Abstract The Aurignacian technocomplex in Eurasia, dated to ~43-28 ka, has no direct archeological taxonomic equivalent in Africa during the same time interval, which may reflect differences in inter-group communication or differences in archeological definitions currently in use. Extinct hominin taxa are present in both Eurasia and Africa during this interval, but the African archeological record has played little role in discussions of the demographic expansion of Homo sapiens, unlike the Aurignacian. Sites in Eurasia and Africa by 42 ka show the earliest examples of personal ornaments that result from extensive modification of raw materials, a greater investment of time that may reflect increased their use in increasingly diverse and complex social networks. -

Museum of Natural History & Science Interpretation Guide for The Cavern A cave is a naturally occurring hole in the ground large enough to be explored by humans. Caves can be found on every continent in the world. Caves, along with the objects found within them, are extremely fragile and take millions of years to form. They are home to unique organisms—many of which are still unknown to science; they are archaeological sites that preserve our cultural heritage; and geologic laboratories that demonstrate how water can both dissolve and deposit rock. Caves are a vital and non-renewable resource that must be conserved and protected. The Cavern is a recreation of a Kentucky limestone dissolution cave. It is the largest artificial cave in the United States—and some say the world—containing 535 feet of passage in an area 44 feet wide, 24 feet high and 64 feet long. Parts of the cave were modeled after two caves in Kentucky: Teamers Cave in Rockcastle County and Dyches Bridge Cave in Pulaski County. By modeling our cavern after these two caves, our dissolution cave has a realistic appearance. A dissolution cave is by far the most common type of cave. They can be found throughout the world if the right conditions present themselves. The formation of a dissolution cave requires four basic elements: rock, water, carbon dioxide and time. • Rock, especially carbonate rocks, such as limestone, is the first ingredient. These types of rocks were formed hundreds of millions of years ago. It is in the seas surrounding the continents that limestone is formed.
