The study shows how Hagen's uses of articulation, melody, form, dynam ics, harmony, text painting, word painting, and tonality enhance the dramatic elements of the poems without sacrificing lyricism. The research began with performances by this writer of the works of Hagen and continued with interviews and further performances. Discussion of the lyrical and dramatic elements of Hagen's vocal works forms the body of the document and illustrations facilitate study of the works. An interpretive guide for two song groups will assist vocal performers to understand these songs and possibly lead to improved interpretive practices. A complete listing of the composer's vocal works concludes the document. 9 INTRODUCTION Devotees of contemporary opera and chamber music know and appreciate the music of Daron Hagen. In the course of his twenty year compositional life, Hagen, bom in 1961, has accomplished much, and has received many accolades, awards and prizes for his instrumental as well as vocal music. The present study, which focuses on selected ex amples of the vocal music, has the two-fold purpose of introducing Daron Hagen's art songs, including a world premiere group of songs. Resuming Green, and illuminating the musical and dramatic beauty of Hagen's songs through an interpretive guide. After the premiere of his first opera. Shining Brow, both Hagen and the opera received critical acclaim.

I owe my gratitude to my teacher, committee chair, Prof. Patricia Stiles, who has been very careful and supportive of my voice, career goals, health, and everything. Her instructions on the expressive performance have inspired me to consider the relationship between music and text, and my interest in song interpretation resulted in this study. I am thankful to the publishers for giving me permission to use the scores. Especially, I must thank Lori Laitman, who offered me her latest versions of the songs with a very neat and clear copy. Daron Hagen (b. 1961) is an American composer and sought-after collaborator whose dazzlingly broad stylistic range embraces everything from lush romanticism to abstract electro-acoustic soundscapes. Along with numerous other accolades, including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Friedheim Prize, the American Academy of Arts and Letters cited in 2014 his “outstanding achievement," acknowledging with an Academy Award "a composer who has arrived at his own voice." The recipient of commissions from the New York Philharmonic, Seattle Opera, Philadelphia Orchestra, and others, he has written more than 350 works for the concert stage, including 9 operas (A Woman in Morocco, Shining Brow, Amelia, Bandanna, Vera of Las Vegas), and the forthcoming Orson, which he will also design and direct; 14 concertos (for Gary Graffman, Jaime Laredo, Sharon Robinson), 5 symphonies (Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Oakland, Albany, Phoenix), 22 song cycles (Paul Sperry, Kings Singers, Ashley Putnam); and dozens of chamber, band, and choral works. Hagen is a frequent conductor, collaborative pianist, librettist, and stage director of his own theatrical works, and has worked with Leonard Bernstein, Ken Cazan, Michael Christie, Lara Downes, JoAnn Falletta, Nathan Gunn, Kate Lindsey, Michael Morgan, Gerard Schwarz, Leonard Slatkin, and Stephen Wadsworth, among others. A Lifetime Member of the Corporation of Yaddo and Trustee of the Douglas Moore Fund for American Opera, he has served as artistic director of the Seasons Music Festival, and as president of the Lotte Lehmann Foundation. Born in Wisconsin, Hagen studied composition with Ned Rorem at the Curtis Institute and David Diamond at the Juilliard School, then worked extensively as a copyist and editor for numerous concert composers and Broadway shows, including Elliot Carter, Virgil Thomson, Gian Carlo Menotti, and Disney.

  • Analyzing Gender Inequality in Contemporary Opera
ANALYZING GENDER INEQUALITY IN CONTEMPORARY OPERA Hillary LaBonte A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS August 2019 Committee: Jane Schoonmaker Rodgers, Advisor Kristen Rudisill Graduate Faculty Representative Kevin Bylsma Ryan Ebright Emily Pence Brown © 2019 Hillary LaBonte All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jane Schoonmaker Rodgers, Advisor Gender inequality is pervasive in the world of performing arts. There are far more female dancers, actresses, and singers than there are male performers. This inequality is amplified by fewer numbers of roles for women. This document examines gender inequality in contemporary North American operas, including the various factors that can influence the gender balance of a cast, with focused studies on commissioning organizations and ten works that feature predominantly female casts. Chapter 1 presents the analysis of all operas in OPERA America’s North American Works database written and premiered from 1995 to the present. Of the 4,216 roles in this data, 1,842 (43.6%) are for female singers. Operas written by a female composer or librettist have 48% roles for female singers, operas with a female lead character have 51%, and intentionally feminist or female-focused operas have 53% roles for female singers. Chapter 2 considers ten companies devoted to the creation and production of contemporary opera in North America. Works premiered by these companies have an average of 47% roles for women, and companies with a female executive or founder are more likely to have a higher average. Companies that use language like “innovative” or “adventurous” in their mission statement are more likely to have greater female representation in the casts of their commissioned works.

  • Reading the Musical Through Interdisciplinary Lenses
PART 7 Reading the Musical through Interdisciplinary Lenses The musical is, by definition, a thoroughly interdisciplinary endeavor. The image of a composer isolated in his chilly room, trying to churn out inspired art, may sound like Rent but dates back to Beethoven—and it’s a romantic but false image in both cases. Art is created by its social context and, in turn, shapes it: Beethoven required performers, conductors, producers, and supporters to make music; Roger had to get out of the apartment and into the world before he was able to write a song. A musical needs a composer, lyricist, and bookwriter (these three jobs can be done by one, two, three, or more people), not to mention a director, producer, choreographer, designers, performers, musicians, and an audience in order to be fully formed. A musical, then, is a lived experience—not a script or a score. Studying musicals thus requires at least some familiarity with multiple fields. A musicologist working on musical theater scholarship may need to learn some stuff about choreography along the way; a sociologist might need to dig a little into the history of lighting design. Every chapter in this book is, to varying degrees, an interdisciplinary study. Other sections have already gathered chapters that find musicologists using a gender lens, or theater historians using a race/ethnicity lens, or performance studies scholars using a philosophy lens, for example. These chapters in particular, though, might be thought of as intentionally bringing together two or more fields—some of them unlikely or rare, others more traditional—as the fundamental approach.

  • Amy Burton: Debussy Podcast
Greetings! “I am working as much as I can. These are still the moments when I come closest to satisfying my taste for the inexpressible!” – Claude Debussy to his publisher, July 1910 We’ve been immersing ourselves in a world of Debussy—and a curious life it was! One hundred years ago when Debussy closed his eyes for the last time, laying down unfinished scores and truncated relationships, he may or may not have known that in expressing the inexpressible, at least, he had succeeded. Debussy lived only 55 years, 1862-1918, during a unique moment in time: France at the fin de siècle. His was a world of literature, art and music; of cafés, bookshops and salons; of premieres, performers, deadlines and divorces; and finally, world war. That is a lot of nitty-gritty for a man who said, “Those around me refuse to understand that I have never been able to live in a world of real things and real people.” And so we invite you to come this weekend to hear the kaleidoscopic world of Debussy through his songs—some of the most sublime in the history of art song—and to learn about the man who brought them into being. Yours with a song, Co-Artistic Director Suzanne DuPlantis Click here for Suzanne's Debussy blog. Tickets $10 student tickets are available at the door. Amy Burton: Debussy Podcast Celebrated soprano Amy Burton will be singing in Lyric Fest's upcoming Debussy concerts. In this engaging podcast, she talks about Debussy’s early connection with singers, the poetry and images behind his atmospheric songs, and what he so palpably conveys.
