Planning Meeting Matt Tabbenor chaired a meeting held in Orange on the 6th April to discuss the future of cricket across Western Zone considering the changing population shift to the larger centres across our Zone. Some very important ideas on the future of cricket across our Zone came out of the meeting and these will be discussed at Council AGM’s and voted on at Western Zone AGM held on 27th July. Country Committee of Management The Country Committee met on the first Monday in September, December, March and June. The AGM was held in Gerringong August 2013 where life membership was presented to Simon Moore from Newcastle. The 2014 AGM will be held at Mittagong RSL on Saturday 23rd August followed by the Country Dinner at the Bradman Museum. NSW Cricket Winning the Sheffield Shield and coming runners up in the Ryobi Cup were the great successes of NSW male cricket in the 2013-14 season. NSW Cricket and ACT Cricket are close to signing an agreement that will see a Sydney Metropolitan team and a NSW Country ACT team play in the Australian Championships in boys Under 17 and Under19’s and girls Under 15 and Under 18’s. The selection process will see ACT juniors become part of Southern Zone teams to compete in the Under14-16-17-19’s competition for boys and Under 15 and 18 for girls. This is an exciting proposal which will give talented Country Players the opportunity to be selected to play in the Australian Under Age Championships. The financial situation of NSW Cricket has improved dramatically this season and the new television rights for the T20 cricket has been a major success.

In conclusion it has been my pleasure to represent Western Zone as a delegate to Country Cricket and NSW Cricket. WZ Administrator - Colin Wood

Another very busy season has been completed. My sincere thanks to the ‘cricket people’ who have participated, organised and supported cricket activities in Western Zone.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this Annual Report. It is obvious we have many great and talented servants of the game in Western Zone.

The year got off to a great start with our second Awards Night, where we honoured Mr Doug Wright from Cowra with Life Membership. A truly worthy recipient on this great honour. As well we celebrated the CCNWS Championship won in Orange on 25 November 2012. The Awards night also allowed us to enjoy the company of our only other NSW Country Champion team, the side that defeated Newcastle in 2001-02.

In his role as Country Programs Manager Bruce Whitehouse continued his fantastic support of Western Zone Cricket. Chairman of CCNSW, Ian Hogg, has been unwavering in his support and council. To Andrew Jones and the Board of CNSW, we Thank You for providing the resources that allow us to continue to provide an ‘opportunity’ for cricketers to play the greatest game at a level they might not normally enjoy. There have been many structural change within CNSW and I hope these changes will be of benefit to all those involved in cricket in Western Zone

Matt Tabbernor continues to go above and beyond in his role as Western Region Cricket Manager and we should all be very grateful for what he brings to cricket in our part of the world.

Following our General Meeting in February, where the future of Western Zone cricket was discussed, a steering committee (for want of a better word) meet in Orange in April and the recommendation have been circulated. Please consider them carefully, as I believe they are pivotal to the future of cricket in Western Zone.

Many young cricketers are also indebted to our coaches. CNSW Western Academy Coach Jordan Moran and our Regional Coaches, Rod Kershaw, Trevor Thomas, Garth Dean and Tony Wells, the coaches of all our representative teams and coaches all the way down the line, Thank You on behalf of Western Zone.

We continue to act responsibly in relation to our finances and the financial statements show, despite a deficit, another solid year. Thank you to Chairman Dennis Cox and Deputy Chairman Neil Doherty who make up the Finance Committee. Thank you to our retiring Auditor, Mr Bruce Clements. Bruce has audited the financial statements of Western Zone Cricket for the past ten years and his advice has been much appreciated. At short notice Peter Crowley (a Partner in Talbots Chartered Accountants) has audited the financial statements this year and we are grateful for his support.

In season 2014-15 we welcome Telstra as our sponsor. I’m indebted to Scott Curtin (Area General Manager Western) and Paul Rapley (Local Business Development Specialist) from Telstra Country Wide who have facilitated the deal. Look out for some red hot offers from Telstra.

NSW Western Region Cricket Manager – Matthew Tabbernor

T20 Blast Schools Cup

The T20 Blast School Cup grows bigger and bigger each year as more and more schools and communities get involved. In the 2013/2014 season 27 events were held with a further 3 unfortunately washed out. This includes 2,840 boys and girls participating in the traditional outdoor events throughout the August-October time slot to encourage participants to register for the local junior cricket competition. This competition is designed for maximum participation and excitement and events are held for students in years 3-6. New events were held at Grenfell, Wellington, Trundle, Walgett, Coonamble, Warren and Orange Small Schools. St Mary’s Dubbo boys and girls team represented Western at the State Final day held at Blacktown in October 2013.

Annually, Bathurst Indoor Stadium host the Western special needs students indoor cricket day with 300 participating in the primary and secondary competitions.

New in 2014 was an indoor cricket T20 Blast day with 480 children from years 5-8 participating over 3 days at Dubbo Sports World. This was used to promote the indoor cricket competitions held at the centre during the winter months and the feedback received will see these events become more popular in the future.

For season 2013/2014, 3,620 children participated in T20 Blast Schools Cup throughout the region over 27 days. This is an increase from 2012/2013 where 2,500 children participated over 20 events.

T20 Blast Community Events

Following the success of the pilot program in the Blue Mountains, T20 Blast School Holiday Programs expanded this season with events held in the Blue Mountains (41 participants), Orange (20 participants) and Bathurst (22 participants). A total of 83 children took part in this program throughout the January school holidays experiencing the thrills and excitement that T20 cricket and the Big Bash League brings.

This is a great program and helps bridges the gap between the MILO In2Cricket program and junior cricket. It will be great to see more events up and running in the Western Region and the advantages of this program is that all equipment is supplied, it is participation based (everyone, bats, bowls and wicket keeps in every game) and participant are occupied while waiting to bat by the skills Zone (teaching participants the skills needed for cricket in a fun based environment). For more information on this program please visit t20blast.com.au.

Player Visits

The Western Region participated in numerous activities to give volunteers, players and school children the chance to mix with current and former players.

The Western Region hosted 3 country blitzes this season with Chris Tremain and Daniel Hughes (Orange and Cowra) and Scott Henry and David Dawson (Mudgee and Bathurst) coming out to the region in September 2013. The 3rd Country Blitz tour visited Dubbo where Trevor Chappell visited for 2 days in March 2014. The players participated in numerous events during the blitz including school visits, T20 blast days, come and try days, coaching clinics and volunteers dinners. Considerable media coverage was afforded to these tours.

Gurinder Sandhu attended the Blue Mountains Grammar School presentation dinner where he answered questions from the attendees as well as presented awards on the night.

Bathurst children from the T20 Blast holiday program participated in the Next Gen promotion and the Sydney Thunder v Sydney Sixers match on the 25th January at ANZ Stadium. The Next Gen promotion is aimed to inspire the next generation of cricketers and the children were able to enter the field prior to the start of each innings and received a signed hat from one of the players.

Lastly, students from St Mary’s Dubbo and Gulgong Public School, as well as participants at the Young In2Cricket centre were lucky enough to participate in the on ground entertainment during the lunch break of the Sydney Ashes test.

School Promotions

School promotions were conducted throughout the region promoting many cricket programs such as junior cricket registration days, In2Cricket and T20 Blast programs, Big Bash League and conducting high school competitions. This was completed by school clinics, assembly talks, flyer drops, newsletter inserts as well as Active After Schools (AASC) and School Heroes Programs (SHPs) visits

Most of the promotions were undertaken by university students participating in the DO select program. This program is aimed at identifying university students completing teaching and sports degrees and training them to give them the skills and opportunities to conduct programs and promotions in the school environment.

Cricket is keen to be considered a “sport for all”. A key component of this is the Dream Cricket program. Initiated by the Bradman Foundation and support by the Rotary Clubs, Dream cricket is designed for students with special needs the opportunity to participate in cricket. Gala days were held in Orange and Dubbo in November 2013 with over 200 children participating and schools from Bathurst, Wellington, Gilgandra, Cowra, Parkes and Forbes getting involved.

The School Heroes Program is a 4 week cricket program conducted during school hours and compliments the school sport syllabus. 633 children participated in this program throughout the year and each received a Sydney Thunder show bag at the completion of the program.

A SHP pilot program was introduced throughout NSW in 2013/2014, where school teachers conducted the program during sport time and the school was eligible to win prizes included signed bats, equipment, Thunder packs and much more. This proved to be a huge success in the Western Region with 1,098 students and 6 schools participating.

Another exciting initiative being delivered is with the Active After Schools Communities. The AASC program is a Federally funded program designed to get children into sport and active. The program is traditionally ran straight after school for 1 hour for 7 weeks by community coaches. Cricket NSW promotions officers visit the centres once to hand out a Sydney Thunder Show bag, a certificate as well as registration details for the local cricket clubs. This partnership is starting to develop further with some new ideas being developed for next season.

A gala day was held in Dubbo for all the AASC sites around the Dubbo region, with many schools travelling 2 hours to attend. A tabloid of events and modified T20 Blast games were played for the 80 children in attendance and everyone had a great time.

Volunteers

Without volunteers, our great game will not survive in many towns and communities. I acknowledge that the recruitment and retention of volunteers is getting tougher as the years progress and my goal this year is to assist and reward as many volunteers as possible.

A number of Western volunteers were recognised throughout the season and attended many activities including:

 Invited to the Cricket NSW box at the Sydney Thunder v Melbourne Stars BBL match at ANZ Stadium on 1st January 2014.  Invited to the Volunteers night at the SCG during the Sydney Sixers v Hobart Hurricanes BBL Match  Invited to day 4 of the Sydney Ashes Test and to complete a lap of the ground during the tea break. Unfortunately, this was not able to happen due to the Aussies completing the whitewash on day 3; however the volunteers were invited to the Sydney Smash BBL match on the 25th January.  A new registration competition run in August 2013 with signed NSW Blues bats, Sydney Thunder T-Shirt and a Thunder pack to Associations and In2Cricket coordinators who provided details of their registration events prior to the start of the season. Congratulations to Mudgee JCA, Cobar, JCA, Cavaliers CC, Condobolin In2Cricket, Young In2Cricket and Bathurst In2Cricket who won the prizes by providing these details  Volunteer events held in Dubbo and Cowra  Hats and shirts to be handed out to volunteers over the next few months.

Massive congratulations to the Associations and volunteers who were recognised during the Australia Day awards.

This season saw the introduction of a monthly newsletter to communicate more efficiently with people in the region on what Cricket NSW is doing in the region but also to give you grants information and tips to help make your job easier. I am looking to continue this next season and will be looking to incorporate a volunteer recognition section where Associations, Clubs and In2Cricket coordinators can nominate exceptional volunteers to be recognised but also to be given the opportunity to participate in the events listed above.

I would like to remind everyone that I am happy to assist wherever possible and I am only ever a phone call or email away. I understand the pressures volunteers are under in relation to time and trying to do everything but there is tools out there to assist you in relations to draws and table management, communication, statistic gathering (My Cricket), grant writing (Julie) and facility and local government management (Anthony) just to name a few.

Australian Level Australia lost the home Ashes Series winning 3 games from 7. NSW had some 6 players in Test, ODIs & T20s. Australian Southern Stars won their 3rd consecutive World ICC T20 Championships in Bangladesh in March with 5 players from NSW. The publicity and associated recognition from this win has been great for the sport.

U18s:- Amy Edgar, Taylor Gilbert U15s:- Nil 2015 School Sports Australia will take over the running of the 15 Girls similar to the Boys and this is where more girls will appear but one factor that could stem this will be costs involved as presently CNSW pay for 15s Team. Unsure how CNSW’s Female Officer will be involved but will find it hard if Department of Education Teachers are to be selectors /coaches and managers not dissimilar to the present Boys system. NSW are to be the first to host Carnival. Primary:- 2014 Squad with team to be named in April School Holidays for National C’Val in Darwin in June. With a player loaned from opposition. Very disappointing that 11 players withdraw – Older players -Keeghan Tucker (Police work), Rachel Hurn (O/S), Kaitlyn Smith-Nicols (injured), Kira Churchland (injured) Nicola Harbison (Uni), and players in Academy Squad plus “add ons” just didn’t wish to go. Also many of the youngsters coming from 15s were found wanting at this next level especially against players 18yrs and older, but will be better in 2014 for the experience. Team wont be a problem in 2014 as many 15s coming up. Inter-Council Games 16yrs Girls – was only contested by Mitchell (Rachel McCann – Mudgee) and Macquarie (Alan Hughes – Dubbo) Councils with Lachlan unable to find a manager/coach to take them as Jenny Lyn was committed to PSSA and had some health problems at that time. Macquarie were victors in both games. Lets hope some Lachlan men coaches or parents can get off the backsides and assist here for the girls sakes. Though Matt Tabbernor has a very reasonable suggestion to make this happen so all 3 Council’s actually field girls teams.

ACT Game Once again ACT advised that they couldn’t fit a game in at the end of the season School PSSA State Carnival– 2014 Western finished 9th Lord Taverners KO - Wellington PS were knocked out by Milthorpe PS but who were then knocked out in the final 8. Many of our youngsters competed in the Molly Dive or Margaret Peden January Holiday Carnivals (u13s & u15s Competitions) Samantha Gordon (nee Hinton) ,Sally Moylan and Roxi Van Veen played for St George- Sutherland in the 1st Grade Grand Final against the victorious Sydney University team but won the T20 Competition.

Once again a big “Thank You” to everyone associated with cricket in Western Zone for their continued support of the Women’s Program in WZ Selector – Neil Doherty

The season started with a trial game against Hawkesbury in Dubbo. This game was treated as a trial by both teams. This game gave Western the chance to play some younger fringe players in this game. Some of these players went to Sydney to play grade cricket at the start of the season and therefore were not available to play in the Country Championships. The Sydney grade clubs are trying to get the young players to Sydney as soon as possible. In my opinion the younger players would be better served by playing their cricket in the Country until they have at least finished high school. There are plenty of good mentors in country cricket.

The Western Premier League games held earlier in the season were used to help select the Western Zone team. The inter council games were held again this season to help pick the Western Zone team. Lachlan Cricket Council 185 beat Mitchell Cricket Council 97 in the first game. Macquarie Valley Cricket Council 7 for 121 beat Mitchell Cricket Council 117 in the second game. Lachlan Cricket Council 8 for 176 beat Macquarie Valley Cricket Council 175 in the last game. A big thank you to Orange District Cricket Association for hosting these games.

The Western Zone team to play in the Country Championships in Orange was announced after these Council matches. Pat Rosser(C) (Parkes), Mitch Bower ( Dubbo), Trent Colley ( Dubbo), Tim Cox ( Dubbo), Phil Dunford ( Parkes), Liam Gough ( Orange), Anthony Heraghty (Parkes), Joe Kershaw ( Cowra), Ryan Medley ( Dubbo ), Jordan Moran ( Dubbo ), James O’Brien ( Dubbo ), Jason Ryan ( Dubbo ), Josh Toole ( Bathurst), David Redden ( Manager) John Perkins ( Scorer) Matt Crawley ( Coach). Liam Gough had to withdraw due to an injury and his place was taken by Ben Patterson (Dubbo).

Western Zone lost their three games at the country championships in Orange. Pat Rosser, Tim Cox and Joe Kershaw were chosen in the NSW Country team to play in the Australian country championships. Congratulations to these three players. Joe Kershaw went to Sydney to play grade cricket with Sydney University after he finished his higher School Certificate. He had a successful season with Sydney University and was part of the winning second grade team. He also was awarded the man of the match for the Grand Final.

The Western Zone under 19’s team was announced in January. There was no trial held this year as the age group was changed to Under 19’s and a number of the players in contention had played for the under 17’s and the players had been playing for their town. This team played in the Country Colts Carnival in Coffs Harbour from 21st February to 23rd February 2014.

The team was Stuart Fredericks Mudgee , Jeremy Judge Bathurst vice Captain, Kyle Aubin Bathurst, Nick Chapman Mudgee, Conner Crook Cowra, Henry Hunt Cowra, Alex Johnson Bathurst, Charles Litchfield Orange, Jacob McNaught Cowra, Ben Patterson Dubbo, Hayden Sealey Parkes, Corey Suckling Dubbo and Vince Umbers Parkes. Henry Hunt had to withdraw from the team due to a family bereavement and he was replaced by James Ryan from Orange. Steve Ryan was coach and I was the manager.

Ben Patterson bowled very well in the carnival and was rewarded by being chosen in the Country merit side.

Thanks to all the team managers, scorers and coaches for this last season. The time given by these people to look after these cricket teams cannot be underestimated.

Pat Rosser and Tim Cox were the other two selectors and they deserve a big thank you for taking the time to help select these teams when they are both still playing. It is a tribute to both players that they were able to still play very well while selections issues needed to be discussed during the games.

WZ Umpires Representative – Greg Jones

In the last couple of seasons, we have maintained a focus on umpire training and development, aiming to recruit new umpires and provide professional development for existing members.

In recent seasons there were training courses on the Laws conducted in Orange and Mudgee, and Dubbo hosted a Laws course and simultaneously a Professional Development Seminar for existing umpires. In the Lachlan council region, a number of umpires completed a Laws of Cricket course in June 2013 in Cowra. Courses and professional development for the coming off-season were not finalised at the time of writing.

It is my hope that, in the coming season, I will be able to get out and about and see a lot more of our Western Zone umpires in action – both for “talent identification” and development. It is vital that we facilitate the improvement of the standard of all umpires who are keen to learn (new and “old”), so that players can gain maximum enjoyment from the game, regardless of the level at which they play!

2013/14 season saw the continuation of the Western Zone based “Development Panel” of umpires. This season had Mark Waldren and Graeme Glazebrook (Bathurst) appointed to this panel. As is usual there is an expectation that these umpires are appointed to as many Zone matches as possible with a view to advancement towards the Country panels. One focus in the pre-season and early season for 2014/15 will be identification of talent to be included on this panel. With many senior representative fixtures in addition to the early rounds of the SCG Cup, Plate and Shield, there is a need for a clearly identifiable group of outstanding umpires.

Significant appointments during the season include: SCG Shield Final in Cowra (Graeme Glazebrook). Graeme also made his SCA 1st grade debut during the season. Zone final of SCG Cup (Graeme Glazebrook and John De Lyall). Zone final of SCG Shield (Mark Frecklington and Darrin Masters). Zone final of SCG Plate (Doug Sandry and Robert Ryan). Mark Waldren and Graeme Glazebrook were appointed to the Western Premier League final twice (washed out both times) which was ultimately umpired by John De Lyall and Mark Frecklington at the third attempt. Mark Frecklington was also appointed with Mark Hastings to the Mitchell Presidents Cup final. Congratulations also to the following umpires who officiated in local first grade grand finals: Graeme Glazebrook & Mark Waldren (Bathurst), Mark Hastings (Blue Mountains), John De Lyall & Doug Sandry (Dubbo), Noel Phoebe (Gilgandra and Wellington), Alan Seis & Garry O’Reilly (Gulgong and Mudgee), Mark Frecklington & Peter Kirby (Orange).

Congratulations must go to all Western umpires for their commitment (in terms of distance travelled as well as time) throughout the year and particularly those rewarded with finals appointments.

My thanks must go to all umpires in Western Zone and to the executive members of our Affiliated Associations Macquarie Valley CUA and Mitchell CUA (including member branches). In particular, I would like to acknowledge Doug Sandry, Greg Morrissey, Gordon Fredericks, and Steve Warrington for their assistance with representative appointments.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the excellent work, completed over a number of years, by the previous Western Zone Umpire Representative, Dr Stephen Poole. He dedicated an enormous amount of energy to Western Zone cricket and umpiring.

MATCH DAY 1, RIVERINA V WESTERN, WADE PARK

A much-improved Riverina defeated Western by 30 runs in the first game of the carnival. Winning the toss and , Riverina made 9/232 off their 50 overs, on the back of 80 and 68 respectively from their batsmen Jimmy McNeil and J Thompson. Joe Kershaw (3/51 off 10) and Tim Cox (2/21 off 10) were the best of our bowlers.

Riverina won the match in their second batting session, where McNeil and Thompson put on 143 runs for the fifth wicket. Western let things slip in this session, with average fielding and , plus superb running between the wickets from the opposition, meant Riverina got away from us. Late wickets kept the Riverina total to 232, which was gettable on a very good pitch.

After an enterprising opening stand of 42 between Mitch Bower (50) and Anthony Heraghty (24), Western struggled during the middle session once more, eventually being dismissed for 202, saving a bonus point with a last wicket stand of 40 between James O’Brien (38*) and Tim Cox (16). Overall, this was a disappointing day for us, we were off the boil and Riverina deserved their victory; they were hungrier and more switched-on for most of the day.

MATCH DAY 2, SOUTHERN V WESTERN, RIAWENA OVAL

An extraordinary day of cricket, punctuated by a long rain delay, meant that Southern had a D/L chase of Western’s total. Rain started at lunch, and did not abate until 5.10pm, meaning a frenetic 25 over run chase in gloomy light at Riawena Oval.

Winning the toss, Western skipper Patrick Rosser did what ALL locals would do at Riawena; he batted first. Western managed a Par score of 205, disappointingly all out with 16 balls left of our 50 overs. The run-scoring highlights an average batting performance; Jason Ryan (31*), Trent Colley 30, Anthony Heraghty 29, Josh Toole 29, James O’Brien 28, Pat Rosser 27. Left-arm spinner B Mitchell took 5/31 for Southern.

The rain then fell, meaning that Southern had to chase an amended target of 145 for victory off 25 overs. Veterans Phil Dunford (2/14 off 5) and Tim Cox (2/25 off 5) bowled beautifully under the circumstances, with a wet ball.

Former Western keeper Allen Sullivan played a gem of a knock for Southern, coming in at 4/27 and staying until the end for a superb (53*).

Southern needed 2 to win off the last ball, 8 wickets down. Tail-ender M Wright hit one to Jordan Moran at mid-off and took off. Jordan just missed with his throw, and our fine-leg (Joe Kershaw) smartly backed up and threw down the striker stumps to run out Wright trying to complete the match- winning run. So, scores were TIED after D/L. Sadly, however, senior Umpires Neil Findlay and Kim Norris correctly advised us after the game that Southern had won a tie-breaker based on fewer wickets lost. This was a very hard way to lose a game of this magnitude; congrats to both teams on finishing off an amazing, unpredictable game of cricket in near darkness.

MATCH DAY 3, ILLAWARRA V WESTERN, WADE PARK

Onto Day 3, where we played the eventual Pool winners, Illawarra. Graeme Batty won the toss and batted. Western dismissed Illawarra for 221 off the final ball of the innings. Our four frontline seamers (Kershaw, 2/20; Cox, 2/29; Dunford, 3/26 and Patterson, 1/14) all performed well. Illawarra’s Cam Nupier made a match-winning 76, aided and abetted by Jon Cook’s 39 in the lower order. We had them 6/71 but just couldn’t knock them over cheaply.

Another average top-order performance (top 5 all made scores between 11-28) meant Western relied on its deep middle order to chase the 222 needed for victory. Josh Toole’s superb and fluent 59, assisted by Joe Kershaw’s 20, got Western to over 50, bowled by leggie Jon Cook. Sadly, Toole fell LBW, then Tim Cox hit 5 off 2 balls, leaving Phil Dunford the task of making 2 runs off the final two balls to win. Cook bowled a perfect wrong-un, cleaning Dunford up through the gate, and Illawarra won by 1 run. 17 year old Oscar Oborn-Corby took 3/31 for the red caps.

Overall, two very close losses and a disappointing loss to Riverina meant we failed our Zone on this occasion. We lost, as Patrick Rosser says, “too many crucial moments” over the three days. Sorry to everyone in our Zone, coming off being State Champions the year before, we didn’t produce the goods over the three days. We will have to be hungrier, more ruthless and must bat more consistently next time around.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL, NORTH SYDNEY V WESTERN, SCG, NOVEMBER 29

After our Zone management lobbied hard and spent a considerable amount of money arranging this game, the match lasted three overs before rain ruined our special day at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Western were 1/18 off three overs when the heavens opened.

Please let me, on behalf of the players and off-field entourage, profusely thank Dennis Cox, Neil Doherty, Colin Wood and the WZC Board for arranging this game. We were all very privileged to play at the SCG and it was very sad to have our day destroyed by the weather. Many thanks to the WZC Selectors (Doherty, Cox, Rosser) for giving me the honour of managing the side.

Also, a great thank you to our off-field team; Matthew Crawley, Kelsey Ferguson and John Perkins. Having really great cricket people around the team makes managing our lads a real pleasure, and Crawls, Kel and Polly all performed superbly over the three days.

Onwards to next season; it’s back to the drawing board for Western.

WZ Under 19 – Neil Doherty

The team was announced in January. There was no trial held this year as the age group was changed to Under 19’s and a number of the players in contention had played for the under 17’s.

This team played in the Country Colts Carnival in Coffs Harbour from 21st February to 23rd February 2014. The team was Stuart Fredericks Mudgee Captain, Jeremy Judge Bathurst vice Captain, Kyle Aubin Bathurst, Nick Chapman Mudgee, Conner Crook Cowra, Henry Hunt Cowra, Alex Johnson Bathurst, Charles Litchfield Orange, Jacob McNaught Cowra, Ben Patterson Dubbo, Hayden Sealey Parkes, Corey Suckling Dubbo and Vince Umbers Parkes. Henry Hunt had to withdraw from the team due to a family bereavement and he was replaced by James Ryan from Orange. Steve Ryan was coach and I was the manager.

We played Illawarra on day one. Illawarra won the toss and batted. Illawarra were dismissed for 62 runs. Ben Patterson bowled really well and took 5 for 15 off 7 overs. Jeremy Judge took 2 for 12. All the bowlers took wickets and bowled well together without letting the pressure off the batsmen. We passed the score at 3 for 63 in 13 overs. Charles Litchfield was the best batsmen with 33. This was a very good win for our team.

We played North Coast on day two. Western won the toss and batted. Western scored 163 with the last wicket falling on the last ball of the 50 overs. Conner Crook top scored with 24, Alex Johnston 20 and Stuart Fredericks 20 were the best batsmen for our team. All our batsmen scored double figures except for Numbers 10 and 11. If one of the batsmen had turned their start into a 50 then we may have won the game. North Coast passed our score in the 48th over being 6 for 166. Charles Litchfield was the most successful bowler taking 3 for 21. North Coast went on to win the carnival. We were not very far away from winning this game.

We played Riverina on day three. Western won the toss and batted. Western made 9 for 196 off 50 overs. We were in trouble early being 6 for 50. Hayden Sealey 75 batted very well and he was supported by Ben Patterson 30 and Stuart Fredericks 18. Riverina made 179 runs in reply. Ben Patterson 4 for 15 and Corey Suckling 3 for 35 bowled very well at the start of the innings. Riverina were 6 for 70 after 23 overs and were always behind the required run rate. Another win for Western and this meant that we finished third at the carnival.

Ben Patterson bowled very well in the carnival and was rewarded by being chosen in the Country merit side. Congratulations to Ben. Thanks to all the parents for transporting the players to Coffs Harbour. A special thanks to the Parents who helped during the weekend.

The 2013/14 campaign started with the lead up games and Tour against St George and Penrith U17’s in Sydney. Western accounted for St George. St George scored 117 with James Ford 4/23, Callan Taylor 2/14 and Daniel Donato the chief destroyers. With the bat Western Zone U17’s – 7/121 with Jeremy Judge 44 and Kyle Aubin 29 the main run getters. The win ensuring WZ retained the Brian Booth Trophy. In the second game of the Tour -- Penrith posted 6/135 with main wicket takers being James Ford 2/30 and William Wolter 2/22. Western Zone U17’s – 5/135 with Henry Hunt 41no, Kyle Aubin 38 and William Wolter 34 the main run getters. This win saw WZ U17’s bring home the now revived Stuart Webster Trophy.

Round 1 of the U17 Country Championships held in Raymond Terrace saw Western Zone up against North Coastal. North Coastal batted first and dismissed for 186. Bowling performances by WZ were from William Wolter 3/33, Jacob McNaught 2/40 and Daniel Donato 2/25. In reply WZ need 7 wickets to pass North Coastal’s score. Best with the bat were Kyle Aubin 68 and Charles Litchfield 54.

In Round 2 Western Zone were up against Newcastle. Western Zone batted first and dismissed for 209 on a good batting surface. With Jeremy Judge 63 and Henry Hunt 51 the main run getters. In reply Newcastle cruised to victory in 39 overs with Callan Taylor 2/24, Nick Chapman 1/39 and Jacob McNaught 1/52 the only wicket takers.

Round 3 saw Western Zone take on Central North. Batting first Central North posted an impressive 9/259 with Jacob McNaught 2/53 and Jeremy Judge 2/21 the main wicket takers. In reply Western Zone was dismissed for 219 with Henry Hunt an impressive 82 and having a good game all-round Jeremy Judge 53.

Henry Hunt gained selection in the Under 17’s Country Team and although missing out on selection to the New South Wales Team was picked up by Australian Capital Territory and had an outstanding Australian Under 17 Carnival. So outstanding he was named in the Australian Under 17 Merit Team. Again, the coaching staff would like to thank Carl Sharpe for his huge contribution towards ordering clothing, organising games/meals and administration. Also thanks to Matt Tabbernor for his help throughout this years’ campaign.

With changes being made to the makeup and structure of the Under 14, Under 17 and Under 19 Squads in Regional Areas of New South Wales in next year’s Academy setup by CricketNSW it will be interesting to observe if this still produces the quality of player Western Zone has for many years. I suppose only time will tell!

Match 1 North Coast

Western won toss and batted, an opening stand of 35, Farnell 14 and Day 38, then Burrowes 28, James Donato 19 took score to 3 for 111, steady loss of wickets before a 29 last wicket partnership between Galvin 43no and Watmore 6no took the score 9 for 180. Good WK from Malady 2 stumpings standing up to the medium pace of Bryant. Peacock 10 runs the other batsman to reach double figures.

Western bowled and fielded very well, Lloyd, Britton, Farnell and Watmore all had good opening spells, after 24 overs North Coast were 2 for 66. North Coast then took the score to 3 for 117, good catches by Farnell and Kitchner, then good spell of 4 overs by Lloyd of 4 for 11 and steady bowling by Farnell, Watmore and Burrowes, North Coast all out 164. Lloyd 4-27, Britton 1-31, Farnell 2-19, Watmore 1-18, Burrowes 1-17 and Peacock 1-23

Match 2 Central North

Western won toss and elected to bat, and were in lot of trouble after 10 overs 6-22. A fine 51 run partnership from Daniel Donato 35 and Ryan Peacock 22, Britton 11 and Woodrow 8, Western all out 105 in 37 over.

Central North lost a wicket early with Britton taking a wicket with his first ball. 2 solid partnerships of 36 and 56 took the score to 94. Western took 3 wickets, Central North passes Western 5 down. Watmore pick of the bowlers 5 overs conceded 4 runs. Lloyd 1-18, Britton 1-26, Farnell 1-15 and Burrowes 2-4. Western lost but fought to the last ball.

Match 3 Central Coast

Central Coast won the toss and batted, Western took 2 early wickets, with good batting by Wheaton 38, Robertson 28 and Eldridge 85 took Central Coast score to 7-205. Good 20 over spell of spin from Burrowes 1-25 and Peacock 1-28 restricted the scoring in the middle of their innings, supported by good fielding. A couple of dropped catches in the final overs were disappointing after good catches by Woodrow and Burrowes. Lloyd 1-41 and Watmore 2-31 were the other wicket takers.

Western's innings started with Farnell run out in the second over and Day in the 10th. An excellent partnership of 84 from Burrowes 50 and James Donato 42, then the lost of 3 wickets, brought Daniel Donato 19 and Peacock 16 to the wicket. They consolidated then we lost 3 wickets in 3 overs, leaving Woodrow 21 and Lloyd 6no to score 36 in 6 overs, Western fell 6 runs short. Good spell from Doyle 2-28

The teams preparation for the cup was thorough, the October camp gave the coaches an insight to all potential players. The training days gave the players an indication of the level of competition they would face.

The concern was the batting, which proved to be not equal to the other teams. We lost wickets in groups, partnerships were built, then a loss of wickets.

Time was spent in practice to bring the players up to a higher standard, the players did work on their skills, but more work through private coaching or a new group of batsman need to have time invested in them.

The team worked hard, never gave up, Tom Galvin and Daniel Donato gave good leadership. Chris and I enjoyed their company and appreciated the support their parents gave us, getting the players to the training days and also at the Cup.

WZ Kookaburra Cup – Trevor Thomas

Western Zone U14 Kookaburra Cup, coaching staff players and parents left Newcastle No1 Sportsground on Thursday thinking what could have been. The potential was evident in this group of Western Cricketers but unfortunately lost the final by 40 runs in a hard fought match.

For the first time County Cricket NSW picked a merit team and Western players Martin Jeffery ,Luke Powell, Connor Slattery and Joel Robinson were selected in the team.

Round 1 Western v Illawarra losing the toss which became a common theme in the week ahead Illawarra elect to bat. They were soon in trouble with Luke Powell striking early Callan Braithwaite bowled well with no luck but was very miserly with figures 9 overs 22 runs . Joel Robinson kept the pressure on taking 3 wickets in quick succession and Illawarra were struggling 4\25. Ben Knaggs and Charlie Greer also able to keep the pressure on, Knaggs taking 2 wickets and Greer 1 but the Illawarra team were able fight back and post a competitive score of 161 . Western opened the batting with Connor Slattery 44 & Cohen Schubert 8 Ben Knaggs batted well for 33 and Marty Jeffery 35 and Western made 5\162 to post a win . This win was a very important win because Illawarra showed on Day 2 that they were a very good outfit by beating Central North.

Round 2 Western v North Coastal , Losing the toss again and strike weapon Luke Powell was the best of the bowlers taking 5\18 from 9 overs and this effort was remarkable because he sustained a soft tissue injury while bowling in game 1 and was not expected to play in this game or perhaps the rest off the carnival. He was put on an intense ice treatment for the rest off the day and that night. Luke was given a fitness test and he was passed fit to play. Angus Cumming in for his first game after being 13th man on Day 1 attacked the stumps and took 3/13 and Marty Jeffery 1\28 bowling his leg spinners and the bowlers did their jobs and North Coastal were bundled out for 113. The batsman from Western set about the total with ease losing 3 wickets Schubert 12 Connor Slattery 53 and Marty Jeffery 34 and past the total in only 21 overs and this was very important with the quotient system that is used for the carnival.

Round 3 Western v Central North. Losing the toss and bowling first on a wicket with a bit in it and Central North were quickly 5 \36 with Luke Powell and Joel Robinson doing the early damage again. Joel looked like he was bowling better each day, and Marty Jeffery bowled well and took 3\27. Central North tail got the score out to 95. The WZ top order struggled to some good bowling and Western were in trouble at 4\13. HenryRailz & Marty Jeffery 29 got together for a valuable partnership taking the score to 5\49, but then soon after both batsman were out . Callan Braithwaite with 24 lead the fight back with Luke Powell 9 but once a gain lost wickets at important times and Western fell short of the total making 89. Because of the great results of the first 2 days the Western had a better quotient and progressed to the final to play Newcastle on day 4.

Final Skipper Jeffery lost his 4th toss in a row and western were fielding again and once again the bowlers had Newcastle batting in trouble with Luke and Joel taking early wickets and Marty Jeffery brilliant in the field being involved in 3 run outs and Newcastle made 157 in 46 overs. The early batting once again struggled and put pressure on the middle order and Western slumped 6\36 but Powell 39no & Brathwaite 19 with support from Railz tried to help Western get back in the game but always playing catch up were all out for 117.

The team’s behaviour was exemplary with all players being a credit to their parents. I would like thank the parents for their support and help though out the carnival and the lead up training and camp held in Orange and Dubbo. Also the effort of all the parents that scored at the carnival for the 4 days that is much appreciated. The Carnival in Newcastle was well run and the venues were all presented in great condition and the Umpiring was extremely professional and consistent during the carnival. Garth and I identified things to work on for next season, including additional conditioning to play at a high level for 4 days, developing batsmen’s ability to build an innings and bat for long periods. After a successful carnival but missing out on the prize the players showed that they have the talent to carry Western Zone U\16’s in 2 years time with extra strength work and cricket coaching to enhance their chances to go do better in their U\16 season.
