  • Changing Concepts of a National Theatre in Europe
Zoltán Imre Staging the Nation: Changing Concepts of a National Theatre in Europe In this article, Zoltán Imre investigates the major changes in the concept of a national theatre, from the early debates in Hamburg in 1767 to the 2006 opening of the National Theatre of Scotland. While in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the notion of a national theatre was regarded in most of Western Europe as a means of promoting national – or even imperial – integration, in Eastern Europe, the debates about and later the realization of national theatres often took place within the context of and against oppressive imperiums. But in both parts of Europe the realization of a national theatre was utilized to represent a unified nation in a virtual way, its role being to maintain a single and fixed national identity and a homogeneous and dominant national culture. In present-day Scotland, however, the notion of a national theatre has changed again, to service a diverse and multicultural nation. Zoltán Imre received his PhD from Queen Mary College, University of London, and is now a lecturer in the Department of Comparative Literature and Culture at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, co-editor of the Hungarian theatre magazine Theatron, and dramaturg at Mozgó Ház Társulás (Moving House Theatre Company) and Természetes Vészek Kollektíva (Collective of Natural Disasters). His publications include Transfer and Translation: Intercultural Dialogues (co-editor, 2002),Theatre and Theatricality (2003), Transillumination: Hungarian Theatre in a European Context (editor, 2004), and On the Border of Theatre and Sociology (co-editor, 2005). As we approach the opening night of the National national theatre from the early debates on Theatre of Scotland, a long-awaited moment for the subject in the eighteenth century through the theatre community and audiences of Scotland the establishment of the Hungarian National is about to arrive.

  • Zsuzsanna Kollár the Drama Concept of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in the 1830S
ZSUZSANNA KOLLÁR THE DRAMA CONCEPT OF THE HUNGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES IN THE 1830S One of the most significant features of Hungarian drama history is that the drama- turgy of dramas and theatre plays gradually began to diverge from each other in the middle of the 18th century. Drama and stage related to each other like skew lines, as the aspects of writing and theatralisation are both complex, given the multidimen- sional nature of theatre. Both sides had quite diverse aesthetics in the 19th century. Beyond aesthetic considerations, many economic and linguistic factors influenced the repertories. Theatre managers had to work with the available properties of the theatre, stage effects, number of costumes, the members of the troupe, and types of instruments, and they also had to focus on acting, mirroring the social norms, facing the moral expectations of the audiences, and sometimes modifying the plot due to restrictions of censorship, not to mention the essential position held in the 18−19th century when theatre needed to entertain and teach at the same time.1 While the aesthetics of the translated European dramas were mostly focusing on the style of the evolving Hungarian grammar, rules of rhymes and vocabulary, it was also one of the expectations to find the greatest Hungarian drama writer, the genius who simulta- neously has Shakespeare’s talent and can be as accurate as Racine. Unfortunately, we are unable to fully examine the original Hungarian dramas and “magyarizations”. My focus will be the comparison between the number of translations and the number of performances to illustrate the impact of academic dramatic theory on Hungarian theatrical traditions in the 1830s.

  • The Politics of Exclusion and Retribution in the Hungarian Film
The Politics of Exclusion and Retribution in the Hungarian Film Industry, 1929-1947 by Susan M. Papp A dissertation submitted in conformity with the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Susan M. Papp 2020 The Politics of Exclusion and Retribution in the Hungarian Film Industry, 1929-1947 Susan M. Papp Doctor of Philosophy University of Toronto 2020 Abstract This dissertation examines how the interwar and postwar governments in Hungary politicized and shaped the film industry to do their bidding and how filmmakers, actors and actresses reacted to those political pressures. The interwar conservative government of Miklós Horthy set out to mold the film industry to suit its ideals and ideas, while, at the same time, seeking to limit the number of Jews in the professions. This dissertation investigates the resulting conflicted political forces that brought about the creation of the Theatre and Film Arts Chamber. It examines the impact of the chamber, specifically how those working in the film industry were affected by these laws and new measures. The archival files of the postwar certification committees provide significant historical insight into the leadership and antisemitic narrative of the entertainment industry during the interwar era. In particular, these files illuminate the motivations of the individuals leading the Theatre and Film Arts Chamber. The certification committees established to investigate the wartime activities of those involved in the film industry played a significant role in creating a positive postwar identity. In 1945, this identity grew out of the belief that Hungary had been a victim of Nazi aggression.
