While they built the Massena brand, they both were working full-time in other wineries. Dan has been in charge of winemaking at Torbreck and Jayson was employed as the manager at Turkey Flat. As of March 2007, they have obtained their own facility in time for harvest 2007 and will be devoting full-time to Massena. Initially the wines - made from grenache – were prescribed as tonic wines for anaemic patients and the famous Penfolds slogan ‘ 1844 to evermore’ harks back to its origins as a prescribed tonic.
