We are committed to providing our staff and students with the best possible environment and support for them to manage their own health and wellbeing and get help where they need it. Wellbeing Week is a week of activities which draws attention to the importance of wellbeing but we want us all to be thinking about it all year round. We are continuing with the theme from University Mental Health day (www.unimentalhealthday.co.uk). The theme for the week is “use your voice”, in which we are encouraging staff and students to talk about their wellbeing and share their own lived experience, ideas, tips and support with each other to promote self care and a healthy work-life balance. We are excited about the opportunities provided by Wellbeing Week but also by the support offered all year round by our academic and support services staff, including Student Advice and Wellbeing Services, JMSU and our external partners. Check out what others in the LJMU Community do to look after their wellbeing… Andrew Barker, Associate Director, Library Services 1.Going for a walk with my wife on an evening. A great opportunity to talk out loud about work and relax after a busy day at work. 2.Reading fiction – it helps me think and takes me out of the moment. 3. Listening to LPs and going to gigs – Music of all sorts relaxes me, or energises me whatever the requirement of the moment! 4.I meditate for 10 minutes every evening. I just sit quietly and watch my breathing. It great for relaxing my mind and bringing a bit of calmness after a day or work and a couple of hours running around doing household chores. LJMU Wellbeing Week is a great initiative, anything that encourages people to look after themselves, and to be kind to themselves – both their body and mind has to be encouraged. Lee Browne, Reception Advisor In work I often have conversations with others on the topic and find that because people know I am open about it they feel able to talk to me about their problems too. Knowing someone understands can be a big help. I get outdoors when I can and I find being out in natural spaces always makes me feel better. If I don’t feel like getting out I’ll settle in with a favourite sci-fi movie. I have an app on my phone for making lists and find that if I put things down it unclutters my head. I also keep lists of projects, mostly things that need doing around the house. I like to keep busy and find that accomplishing something always makes me feel good. Going for a run is a great opportunity to clear my head too. Anything that starts a conversation about mental health is a good thing. Someone out there could be struggling and not know what to do. Having the Wellbeing Week is an opportunity for people to use it to raise concerns either through LJMU services or by talking to a friend.
