LJMU

Wellbeing Week 11 - 15 of March

Wellbeing Week provides an opportunity for staff and students to try out new approaches to staying healthy and happy; from yoga to music, knitting to meditation. There are a wide range of events, talks and informal get togethers across our campuses designed to introduce different ideas on physical and mental health and a chance to spend time with friends and colleagues and to meet new people.

Why not take some time out during the week to get involved!

#ljmuWellbeing Wellbeing Week is part of our 52 week a year commitment to health and wellbeing

At LJMU we believe that our wellbeing is important 24/7, 365 days a year. We are committed to providing our staff and students with the best possible environment and support for them to manage their own health and wellbeing and get help where they need it.

Wellbeing Week is a week of activities which draws attention to the importance of wellbeing but we want us all to be thinking about it all year round. We are continuing with the theme from University Mental Health day (www.unimentalhealthday.co.uk). The theme for the week is “use your voice”, in which we are encouraging staff and students to talk about their wellbeing and share their own lived experience, ideas, tips and support with each other to promote self care and a healthy work-life balance.

We are excited about the opportunities provided by Wellbeing Week but also by the support offered all year round by our academic and support services staff, including Student Advice and Wellbeing Services, JMSU and our external partners.

3 Training available during Wellbeing Week...

Keep Learning is one of our 5 Ways to Wellbeing…

It’s important that we continue to find out different ways to enhance our own and other’s wellbeing. There are a number of FREE training opportunities available during Wellbeing Week and throughout the Academic Year.

See Say Signpost If you want to know how to talk to someone who may be feeling suicidal - it could be a friend, family member, or stranger - then try this free online 20 minute training ‘See Say Signpost’. You will gain understanding in how to see the signs, talk to someone in the right way and understand where to signpost them for help.

During Wellbeing Week we will have See Say Signpost training stations available across the University. These sessions will be facilitated should you wish to ask any questions or discuss any issues that the training may bring up. Headphones are available and the training offers BSL for D/deaf learners. Don’t forget that you can also do the training on your phone, tablet or work computer. 5 Share your wellbeing tips...

During LJMU Wellbeing Week why not share your stories and tips on how you look after your wellbeing? Create a #SelfCareSelfie by taking a photo or video of yourself and tell us what you do to look after yourself or others and tag @LJMUsaw using #ljmuwellbeing #SelfCareSelfie. Check out what others in the LJMU Community do to look after their wellbeing…

Andrew Barker, Associate Director, Library Services 1.Going for a walk with my wife on an evening. A great opportunity to talk out loud about work and relax after a busy day at work. 2.Reading fiction – it helps me think and takes me out of the moment. 3. Listening to LPs and going to gigs – Music of all sorts relaxes me, or energises me whatever the requirement of the moment! 4.I meditate for 10 minutes every evening. I just sit quietly and watch my breathing. It great for relaxing my mind and bringing a bit of calmness after a day or work and a couple of hours running around doing household chores. LJMU Wellbeing Week is a great initiative, anything that encourages people to look after themselves, and to be kind to themselves – both their body and mind has to be encouraged.

Lee Browne, Reception Advisor In work I often have conversations with others on the topic and find that because people know I am open about it they feel able to talk to me about their problems too. Knowing someone understands can be a big help. I get outdoors when I can and I find being out in natural spaces always makes me feel better. If I don’t feel like getting out I’ll settle in with a favourite sci-fi movie. I have an app on my phone for making lists and find that if I put things down it unclutters my head. I also keep lists of projects, mostly things that need doing around the house. I like to keep busy and find that accomplishing something always makes me feel good. Going for a run is a great opportunity to clear my head too. Anything that starts a conversation about mental health is a good thing. Someone out there could be struggling and not know what to do. Having the Wellbeing Week is an opportunity for people to use it to raise concerns either through LJMU services or by talking to a friend.

6 Ben Jones, Head of Communications I have depression and anxiety and spend a lot of time working on my own mental and physical wellbeing - with the help and the support of my wonderful wife and of talking therapies and medication. I have written about my experiences on my blog - www.amjcomms.com/#what-we-think-bens-blog - something which I find hugely helpful for my own wellbeing - it helps to get stuff off my chest and allows me to organise my thoughts and responses to what’s happening with me. It doesn’t suit everyone, but writing down how you feel in a diary, a blog, on your phone or just giving yourself some time to reflect can be a big help. I have a few things I try to do each week to support my own wellbeing, ranging from running, reading physical books and hard copies of newspapers, playing golf, spending as much time as possible at home with my wife and daughter and others who make me smile, getting plenty of sleep with no late nights, no iPhone or iPad after 9pm, listening to music and podcasts (alongside the unmissable LJMU 1823 podcast (www.ljmu.ac.uk/podcast), not wasting time on people who bring me down, watching horse racing and listening to Radio 4. I also obsessively watch Liverpool FC - although this can add to my stress levels rather than alleviate them! Wellbeing is a 52 week a year effort for me but I really welcome the chance to talk about it and share ideas and experiences with colleagues in Wellbeing Week - it’s a great chance to hear what others do for their own self-care and see if you can pick up any hints and tips.

Wendy Lavin, Student Engagement Officer Student Advice and Wellbeing Services It’s really important to me to look after my physical and mental wellbeing. I work with students on wellbeing and really believe in good self-care. It is important for wellbeing to reach out to friends for support when you need it and this is something my friends and I do….a good natter can really help. Good ‘sleep hygiene’ is essential to my wellbeing, things like not scrolling through my phone before or at bedtime helps massively. I also enjoy downtime by watching a good movie or box set or losing myself in a good book. Connecting is really important and so I enjoy spending time with my husband, family and friends. LJMU Wellbeing Week is a really good way to highlight the importance of wellbeing and a great opportunity for the LJMU community to share practical hints and tips. I would urge everyone to get involved.

7 Sile MacRaghnaill, Mental Health Worker, Student Advice and Wellbeing Services My Name is Sile Macraghnaill I am the mental health worker at LJMU. For good mental health and positive wellbeing I sing with a couple of community choirs, I am part of a global trekkie community, I rejoice in my nerdiness and make cosplay costumes. I love music and live gigs, I keep myself occupied and make plans for new things to be involved with, it’s fun learning new things and meeting new people. I talk to my family and friends about how I am feeling especially when I am stressed - talking is really good. It is important to be involved in your own wellbeing and the university offers events across the academic year to promote good physical and mental health. Wellbeing week is jam packed full of fun and educational events aimed exclusively to help all students and staff begin to understand the importance of managing stress and developing strategies to live more healthily in mind body and soul.

Professor Joe Moran, Humanities and Social Science My tip for wellbeing week: remember that, as a human being, you are a body as well as a mind. When you’re feeling low, it’s easy to think that you’re just living inside your own head – and that all you are is a whirring, wired mind which is somehow detached from this shell of a body that you have to lug around. But when you take care of your body, you also take care of your mind. Eat regularly and well, stay hydrated, exercise your legs, breathe fresh air, and get some sleep (but don’t fret about not sleeping, because your body has a way of fixing this for you, and you may be getting more sleep than you think). Remember, as well, that your brain isn’t just a house for your mind. It’s also part of your body – a three-pound lump of jellified fat and protein. And it can get overstimulated and overloaded by your own internal monologue (often involving unrealistic expectations and self-blame) and the endless noise of the world. Sometimes you just need to give your brain a rest, as you would with any other part of your body.

8 Angela Samata, LJMU Honorary Fellow Over the past couple of years I’d slipped into that freelance whirlwind where you say ‘yes’ too often and ‘no’ not often enough. I’d also noticed that this awful little tendency to over-worry about what people thought of me had crept in. I knew I needed to do something… For me, self-care has to have a pretty swift outcome. I know that’s probably shallow, but it’s also true. I can’t run for miles day after day waiting to feel the benefit. I’ve tried the gym and felt the same way about that. I can talk about other people’s artwork all day, but definitely lack the artistic prowess to create work myself, so that’s out. All in all, I thought that starting something and seeing…and eating…the fruits of my labour within 24 hours sounded like a good self-care fit for me. My brother-in-law offered to show me how to make a sourdough ‘starter’, the flour and water mixture that develops naturally to provide the yeast element in sourdough baking. Sounds simple, but I had to overcome the fact that having anything living AND growing in the kitchen made me feel a little bit sick. The responsibility of ‘feeding’ the starter and keeping it warm also filled me with dread. All of that aside, I thought I’d give it a go and later that day Steven the Starter was born. The bug has well and truly bitten and so far I’ve baked 9 loaves in 19 days.

Rosie Steele, MCC Grad, MA Mass Communications & President of LJMU Student Minds Looking after my wellbeing is really important as an MA student, with a lot of extra responsibilities such as working part-time and volunteering to balance alongside my studies. I like to do things that I can easily do at home for free, such as cooking or listening to a podcast (my favourite is The High Low) as they require my full attention so I can place my worries aside even if only for a few minutes. Wellbeing Week was the first time I became aware of the wellbeing services on offer at LJMU which I really needed as well as other activities. Through my time at LJMU I have learnt the importance of taking breaks to optimise my wellbeing and my academic work and Wellbeing Week can be a great place to start. I am really proud to attend and be involved through LJMU Student Minds a university that centres wellbeing and really gives me a sense of community.
