To assist in the detection of spurious and the correction of inaccu- rate pedigrees, is one of the purposes of the present publication, in which respect the first Volume has been of acknowledged utility. The two together, it is hoped, will form a comprehensive and tole- rably correct Register of Pedigrees. It will be observed that some of the Mares which appeared in the last Supplement (whereof this is a republication and continua- tion) stand as they did there, i. e. without any additions to their produce since 1813 or 1814. — It has been ascertained that several of them were about that time sold by public auction, and as all attempts to trace them have failed, the probability is that they have either been converted to some other use, or been sent abroad. If any proof were wanting of the superiority of the English breed of horses over that of every other country, it might be found in the avidity with which they are sought by Foreigners. The exportation of them to Russia, France, Germany, etc. for the last five years has been so considerable, as to render it an object of some importance in a commercial point of view.

"When Music, heavenly maid! was young" the ancients celebrated her with all that fervour and felicity of expression for which they have been so universally and so justly famed; and the moderns, no less ambitious, though more feeble, have offered her all homage, notwithstanding the hoydenish tricks and caprices she has of late dis- played, to the deep regret of all her rational ad- mirers. For my own part, never having tasted of the Pierian spring, and therefore possessing only the cacoethes scribendi, (the zeal without the learning,) I must content myself with observing, in my own plain manner, that in writing an Ac- count of the General State of Music in England — VI PREFACE.

Travel of young Russian ‘liberal’ to Holland in 1811 (based on the unpublished journal by Sergei Ivanovich Turgenev. Scandinavian Philology, 2019, vol. 17, issue 2, pp. 350–364. https://doi.org/10.21638/11701/spbu21.2019.211 The article is the first to introduce into scholarly discourse the unpublished journal of S. I. Turgenev (1792–1827) from the Turgenev brothers’ archive at the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which is a unique collection of manuscripts related to the history of Russian-European cultural relations in the first half of the 19th century. Turgenev’s journal dates back to 1811, when he, a young ‘lib- eral,’ a future diplomat, studied at the University of Göttingen and during his vacation travelled to ‘French’ Holland to see with his own eyes Napoleon, who arrived in Am- sterdam almost at the same time as the Russian student. The deciphered text contains a lot of valuable observations about the everyday life of the Dutch people of that time, about the organization of socially important public institutions (hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages, etc.), about the practical side of organizing travel for foreigners, and also includes reflections on the nature of political obedience, on optimal forms of government in general and for Holland in particular.

It is the object of the ensuing Work, to unite with the utiHty of description, the most finished eleg-ance of the graphic art. To pourtray the noblest and most beau- tiful of all animals, in his natural and improved form, in order to aid the comprehension and judgment of the reader, by an address to the eye, as well as to the under- standing. To blend both useful and ornamental decora- tion with solid instruction, and with such a degree of amusement, as may result from anecdotes connected with the subject. With respect to arrangement, a cursory, yet it is hoped, satisfactory view, is given of the Horses and Horsemanship of the earliest ages, and of this country especially, with an attention to the various species in use, and a delineation of the origin of the Race Horse, through the blood of which, the English breed has been generally ameliorated and elevated to its present state of perfection.
