-3- COLLETTE UPDATE for May and June 2020

Because of the Coronavirus crisis, Spring travel plans with Collette had to be cancelled. We are still hopeful about the Fall trips to Iceland and the Islands of New England. As this "new normal" unfolds daily, please be aware that our board meetings and information about travel tours with Collette in 2021 will most likely be "virtual meetings" for the foreseeable future. Certainly our July 1st board meeting will occur on Zoom. If you are interested in participating, please send us your email address. In August, we will send out a 4X6 postcard reminding you of the trips with an invitation to the tour presentation. Perhaps by September 2, our board meeting may be a combination of virtual communication via Zoom as well as an actual meeting at the SeaAire Golf Course in Torrance. At this September meeting, at 11:30, Collette will give a travel presentation of the tours planned for the Spring of 2021. This edition of the SeaHawk contains a brief bit of info on those trips. If you wish to come to the meeting or participate online, again, please send us your email address. Send it to our new webmaster, Garry, at his address: [email protected]@gmail.com. We will then respond with the information you will need to access our virtual meeting or give directions to the SeaAire Golf Course, if you wish to attend in person. T hank you for your continuing support of our Division 46. I hope to "see" you online or, better yet, in person. Remember: July 1, Zoom only and September 2 possibly in person plus Zoom meeting. In the meantime, stay safe!!!!

Our voice has been heard! And this is why we join CalRTA. The Assembly Public Employment and Retirement Committee had on its April, 2020 agenda AB 2998 (Kiley). AB 2998 (Kiley) proposed amendments that would eliminate a CalSTRS Defined Benefit pension for new educators, negatively impacting future, active and potentially retired educators. Word went out from Government Relations Committee (Susie Dixon, Chair) to CalRTA membership to oppose this bill. The seven members of the Assembly Public Employment and Retirement Committee received thousands of contacts against the proposed bill. AB 2998 (Kiley) was dropped from this agenda for consideration by the committee in the April meeting.

Meanwhile, we continue to campaign for the repeal of the WEP-GPO.
