EDY: Conditions of Acceptance: The United States Military, the Press, and the “Woman War Correspondent,” 1846-1945 (Under the direction of Jean Folkerts) This dissertation chronicles the history of American women who worked as war correspondents through the end of World War II, demonstrating the ways the military, the press, and women themselves constructed categories for war reporting that promoted and prevented women’s access to war: the “war correspondent,” who covered war-related news, and the “woman war correspondent,” who covered the woman’s angle of war. As the first study to examine these concepts, from their emergence in the press through their use in military directives, this dissertation relies upon a variety of sources to consider the roles and influences, not only of the women who worked as war correspondents but of the individuals and institutions surrounding their work. Nineteenth and early 20th century newspapers continually featured the woman war correspondent—often as the first or only of her kind, even as they wrote about more than sixty such women by 1914.

    A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF STARKE COUNTY INDIANA ~ Compiled by Marvin Allen Starke County Historian Copyright© 2008 Introduction Originally submitted to local newspapers between 2004 and 2009 as “Starke History”, these photographs provide a pictorial record of more than a hundred years of local history. Some were taken by other professional photographers, as well as amateurs with early box cameras, but the majority of the pictures were taken by Klopot Studios. Sigmund Klopot moved with his wife Clara and daughter Stella to the area in 1894 from Chicago. Soon studios were opened at North Judson, Knox and Bass Lake. Later Stella related that the lens was so valuable that they carried it with them from studio to studio. She said they traveled on the 3-I Train from Knox to North Judson every Friday morning, handled business there and then took the Erie Train to Bass Lake for the weekend, at least during the summers. After arriving at the south end of Bass Lake, they would take one of the steam boats around the lake as it dropped tourists off a various hotels. Their studio was in Winona on the lake’s north side. Tintypes were a tourist’s favorite. They were quick to make and less costly than prints, which required a separate negative. After Sigmund died in 1912, Clara continued on with the business for many years. Stella eventually took over and ran the studio until the late 1960s. Stella (Klopot) Bonner also served as Starke County’s first County Historian. We are forever indebted to the Klopot family for their many, now historic, photos and efforts to preserve local history.

Skipper, Jr. Abstract Although women in the general population tend to have fewer nicknames than men, women baseball players in the All-American Girls Baseball League, 1943-1954, were as likely as male baseball players to have public nicknames. This high percentage may be the result of women baseball players taking on the role of nicknamer, since the group in power is more likely to bestow public nicknames and more likely to bestow them on members of their own group. Public nicknames may be a reflection of the power differential between men and women in a given environment. ***** Although it is generally recognized that nicknames are an important cultural element in American society, systematic research has been sparse, and almost none of it focuses on women. In sports, nicknaming has probably been more prevalent than in other areas of American life (Blount). Professional baseball provides a rich source of data to study the use of nicknames in American society.1 Professional baseball is usually thought of as a man's activity, but in the 1940s women played in a professional league. As with men, nicknames were commonly used, and it is the objective of this report to investigate the extent of nickname use and the types of nicknames these women ball players had. The goal is to better understand the use of women's nicknames in American society. Women's Professional Baseball In 1943, Philip K. Wrigley, owner of the Chicago Cubs, created the All-American Girls Baseball League.

Reba Meagher receives the Access Economics Report on behalf of the NSW Government and announces a one off grant of $50,000. The Health Minister opened our Seminar “Shaking Up Parkinson’s” on 12 September at State Parliament House. She congratulated Parkinson’s NSW on their work in supporting people living with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s NSW is pleased to receive this one-off grant from NSW Health. The money will be used to assist us in providing information services to over 20,000 people living with Parkinson’s in NSW. We are grateful for the recognition from NSW Health of the financial and emotional cost for people living with Parkinson’s, their families and the entire community. We look forward to increased cooperation with NSW Health in the future. Support Group Our Seminar provided an opportunity to hear from leading state wide meeting researchers and clinicians in the field of Parkinson’s: – Prof. George Mellick from the Eskitis Institute of Cell Support groups from across NSW sent a representative and Molecular Therapies, Griffith University, Brisbane, to Sydney to attend a two day meeting in July.
