Gough and his favourite sermon was about the mustard seed.” (Memoirs of the late Joe Meade, son of Gypsy Village pioneer settlers) “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” (Matthew 13:31-32) VII Author’s Note I can think of no more fitting introduction to this book than the following homily delivered by Fr. Frank O’Loughlin at all Masses on the weekend of 22-23February 2014, the eve of Sacred Heart parish’s centenary celebrations. In his reflection, Fr O’Loughlin, the present parish priest of Sacred Heart, used the epistle of the day (1 Corinthians 3:16 –23) to suggest that a parish is much more than just a church and a school. It is now, as it was in St Paul’s day, the Church in action; a group of people, a family, in which God, through his son Jesus Christ, is a loving, working presence. It is this mysterious yet comforting truth, more than any of the human joys and sorrows, triumphs and disappointments recorded in these pages, that has made Sacred Heart parish what it is today. Kristin Allen Sandringham, June 2014 VIII Introduction lmost every week at Mass we have a reading from one of the letters of St Paul. He Awrote these letters to local communities of Christians in various parts of the area around the Mediterranean. We might see these communities as rather like parishes. He wrote to them and called them “the church”; he wrote to the Church of Corinth or Ephesus or Philippi or Rome or wherever else. In today’s section of his letter to the Christians of Corinth he calls them “God’s temple”. They are God’s temple. God lives outside temples but his presence is concentrated and recognized in a temple. But it is not a building but they – the group gathered together – which is God’s temple, where his presence is concentrated and recognized. So it is with us; we here are God’s temple. We have been so for a hundred years. Paul also tells the people of Corinth that God’s spirit is among them and if he were writing to us here in Sandringham he would believe and he would tell us that God’s spirit lives amongst us. He would say this because that is true of any group of Christians gathered to hear God’s word and to celebrate the Eucharist. The God, who is everywhere and dwells in the hearts of all who live, built himself a temple here in Sandringham by calling women and men into a new relationship with him in which they can and do know him more personally, more intimately. He has been doing this for over 100 years. This week we have been an established Christian/Catholic community for a century here in lovely Sandringham. Anyone who knows of us cannot but know and hear the name of Christ. We and our forebears have been listening to the words of Christ and seeking to put them into action for 100 years and more, We and our forebears have been coming to this altar, and others that preceded it, in order to enter into communion with Christ for 100 years. We ourselves, obviously enough, have not been here for that 100 years but others have handed the baton on to us through several generations. There were those who urged there be a parish here before there was, those who founded it, those who got it well established, those who led it to flourish, those of us now who continue to develop and sustain it. In each generation there have been different challenges to confront, new graces to receive, new people to settle in and welcome, new things achieved. There have been new priests to adjust to, new parishioners to make room for, new developments, new stages of school advancement to deal with. Over so many years there have been many Presentation Sisters among us, teaching our children, consoling those in pastoral need, and often themselves struggling to survive. And now they are among us still, in prayer and in friendship. In every generation there have parents loving and giving of themselves to each other for their children; there have been the elderly diminishing in their energy levels and knowing human limitations and being witness to Christ among us as they feel death draw close. In every generation there have been the children – our delight, our concern and our pride. IX Often in all the complex simplicity of life we work on instinct, on what we feel to be right and good and Christ-like. This instinct is so often right because – as St Paul tells us – the spirit of God lives among us. So often – even unknowingly – the movement of God’s breath within us shapes what we do and say and think, ever in the midst of our human frailty. My dear people, I honour you and I honour those who have gone before you. It is my honour to share the ups and downs of your lives. No one can know this community or for that matter enter this Church without having raised up before them in words and images and people the reality of Jesus Christ. No one can go to our school without at least having the person of Jesus Christ enter their minds, their imagination and their horizon. The question of who He may be is put before them however they respond to that. At the heart of all we do and say or live lies that Jesus in whose total humanness we find – utterly unexpectedly – God! I say again as I have said so often before “Nothing can ever outweigh the supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord”. You! We! belong to Him. He has claimed us as his own, to be his witnesses. In Him we can glimpse now, and will eventually fully enjoy, a wonder and a permanent joy that we did not think even possible for us human beings. Glory be to Him now and forever! Glory be to Him here in Sandringham and throughout the world. X 1 Faith of Our Fathers n the beginning there was the sea. And a low, bushy shoreline broken at one end by a wall Iof ochreous cliffs. Inland, the bush was dark and so dense that the only light to penetrate the canopy fell on the narrow paths made by the indigenous inhabitants. Then came Europeans and within a generation not just the landscape had changed but the indigenous inhabitants had vanished, perhaps forever.1 The value of what the Europeans brought is, and will continue to be, the subject of intense debate. However, for those of Christian inclination, the value of one thing the white intruders brought with them is beyond question: the good news of God’s actual presence on Earth in the form of Jesus Christ and with that message the promise of eternal life. In the 1840s, before the gold rush transformed it into a colonial powerhouse, Melbourne was still a fledgling town. However, although the population was small the faithful had begun to build schools and churches. One of these churches, really more slab hut than church, was St Patricks in Brighton, a tiny settlement on the fringe of the small city. St Patricks was the foundation of a network of churches and schools that were to be built over the next 70 years. From this rickety wooden structure and others like it, would emerge schools, colleges, convents and stone churches with soaring steeples. These would be built mostly by the people of the diaspora from a small island 12,000 miles away. As the new colony was finding wealth, the Great Famine in Ireland was to claim a million lives and many of those who did not perish were to leave in search of a better life in America, Canada and Australia. The Irish emigrants to Australia, many of whom had never travelled much further than the next parish, gathered their families for a long and dangerous trip across the ocean to a country that was still in parts a penal colony. They came as both assisted and non-assisted migrants. The assisted migrants aided by the government, the non-assisted usually by family networks who somehow found the resources to send one of their number to a new life in a new land. On arrival, he or she would find work and lodging and then send home for others whom they in turn would assist on arrival.

Brian Costar and Paul Strangio* By revisiting the existing scholarship deeding with Santamaria's career and legacy, as well as his own writings, this article explores the apparent tension between the standard historical view that Santamaria attempted to impose an essentially 'alien philosophy' on the Labor Party, and the proposition articulated upon his death that he moved in a similar ideological orbit to the traditions of the Australian labour movement. It concludes that, while there were occasional points of ideological intersection between Santamaria and Australian laborism, his inability to transcend the particular religious imperatives which underpinned his thought and action rendered'him incompatible with that movement. It is equally misleading to locate him in the Catholic tradition. Instead, the key to unlocking his motives and behaviour was that he was a Catholic anti-Modernist opposed not only to materialist atheism but also to religious and political liberalism. It is in this sense that he was 'alien'both to labor ism, the majorityofthe Australian Catholic laity and much of the clergy. It is now over six years since Bartholomew Augustine 'Bob' Santamaria died on Ash Wednesday 25 February 1998—enough time to allow for measured assessments of his legacy. This article begins by examining the initial reaction to his death, especially the eagerness of many typically associated with the political Left in Australia rushing to grant Santamaria a kind of posthumous pardon. Absolving him of his political sins may have been one thing; more surprising was the readiness to ideologically embrace the late Santamaria. The suggestion came from some quarters, and received tacit acceptance in others, that he had moved in a similar ideological orbit to the traditions of the Australian labour movement Such a notion sits awkwardly with the standard historical view that Santamaria had attempted to impose an essentially 'alien philosophy* on the Labor Party, thus explaining why his impact on labour politics proved so combustible.

It examines the background and factors leading to the Fourth Plenary Council of Australia and New Zealand held in Sydney in September 1937, which brought all the particular churches of both nations for the second time. Part 2 will appear in the Winter edition of The Swag. After the Australian Plenary Council in 1905, only four particular (provincial and plenary) councils were convened in the English-speaking mission territories under the jurisdiction of the Sacred Congregation de Propaganda Fide (‘Propaganda’): the Provincial Councils of Tuam and Cashel in Ireland held in 1907, the Provincial Council of Melbourne in 1907, and the 4th Plenary Council of Australia and New Zealand in 1937. Developments in church governance, 1905-1937 Fewer councils were held in the English-speaking mission territories in this period as Pope Pius X (1903-1914) had announced in his 1908 Constitution Sapienti Consilio that the hierarchies of Great Britain, Canada, and the United States were ‘established’ and the churches there were no longer considered ‘mission territories’. Australia and New Zealand, however, were to remain mission territories under the jurisdiction of Propaganda.1 In 1911, Cardinal Patrick Moran died, and was succeeded by his coadjutor, Archbishop Michael Kelly (1911-40). Moran had convened three plenary councils in 1885, 1895 and 1905, been Australia’s most powerful Catholic prelate, and for 27 years had functioned as the Holy See’s de facto apostolic delegate for Australia and New Zealand.

    VATICAN II AS I EXPERIENCED IT Michael Costigan* A memorable Roman autumn Autumn is an enchanting time in Rome. By October the relentless heat of July and August, from which many of the Romans themselves flee, is only an uncomfortable memory. The days are shorter, often blessed by cloudless skies, with mild sunshine enhancing the golden glow of some of the ancient and modern buildings, especially in the late afternoon. The Romans, including the Pope and his court, have returned, the number of tourists has declined, the schools and universities are open for business and hot roasted chestnuts are on sale at street corners – or used to be in my day. After living through nine Roman autumns as a seminarian and student- priest between 1952 and 1961, I welcomed the chance in 1963 to experience one more of those magical seasons, probably my last and certainly the most memorable of all. I was there that year for the second of the four autumnal sessions of the Second Vatican Council, as a priest-reporter commissioned to cover the event for the Melbourne Catholic Advocate, of which I was the Associate Editor, as well as for three other Australian Catholic weekly newspapers. With the Australian Catholic Historical Society marking the 50th anniversary this year of the opening of Vatican II by making that event the theme of several of the monthly papers scheduled for 2012, the Society’s President suggested I help to set the scene by painting a picture of what it was actually like to be at the Council. My writings and diary My memory of the 77 days I spent in Rome during that autumn is aided by the voluminous reports I mailed back to Australia and by a pamphlet subsequently published by the Australian Catholic Truth Society with the title Vatican Council Survey, in which I summarised those reports.1 In addition, I kept a rough diary in an exercise book in which, usually before retiring late at night, I noted my daily activities in and around the Council.

Due to its opacity, black is uncommon in stained glass work, blue or grey often being substituted. Here the craftsmen have remained true to the traditional black of the Benedictine habit.1 The window may have come from the studios of Falconer and Ashwin, Sydney. Several other windows in the same part of the church and thought to have been installed at the same time are considered to have come from that atelier.     Death of Bishop Joseph O’Connell, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Melbourne Media Release 29 April, 2013 Bishop Joseph O’Connell, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Melbourne has died at Caritas Christi Hospice, Kew on Saturday 28 April 2013. He was 81. In 1949 Bishop O’Connell commenced studies for teaching, but at the beginning of 1950 he entered Corpus Christi College Werribee to study for the priesthood and was ordained by Archbishop Justin Simonds in St Patrick’s Cathedral on 28th July 1957. Bishop O’Connell obtained a doctorate in Canon Law in July 1961 from the Gregorian University, and lived at St Peter’s College in Rome while studying. He worked in the parishes of West Melbourne and Yarraville, combining this with work in the Archdiocesan Tribunal, becoming Vice Officialis on 13 November 1968. He was named Auxiliary bishop by Pope Paul VI on 12 February 1976, being consecrated by Archbishop Frank Little on 31 March of that year.
