From News Weekly to the Catholic Weekly Sixty-Two Years of Writing for the Religious and Secular Media MICHAEL COSTIGAN From News Weekly to the Catholic Weekly Sixty-two Years of Writing for the Religious and Secular Media MICHAEL COSTIGAN It occurred to me at some stage in 2007 that a special personal anniversary was looming. November of that year would see the sixtieth anniversary of the first of many hundreds of occasions when one of my bits of writing appeared in print in other than a school magazine. With the aim of marking the occasion, 1 began jotting down notes for a retrospective account of my mainly journalistic outpourings. The project, abandoned for a number of reasons, was revived in 2009, courtesy of the kind invitation of the Australian Catholic Historical Society. Thus, at the ri sk of being excessively autobiographical, I agreed to renect on my own modest but long-term contribution to the Catholic and general media over half a dozen decades as a journalist, editor and freelance writer. If it has any value, my account will shed a little light on a period of great change in the Church, in society and in the media of communication. In school and seminary (1947-61); early writings I was a sixteen-year-old sc hoolboy in 1947 when my first article appeared in print in what, at least in Victoria, where it was on sale at many church doors, was erroneously deemed to be a Catholic publication. I refer to News Weekly, the organ of B. A. Santamaria's anti-communist Movement, later the National Civic Council. That year, a few of us senior boys at the Jesuits' St Patrick's College, East Melbourne, had been invited by a resurgent post-war Campion Society to join a training class conducted by the author Niall Brennan for would-be writers. The homework given to me one week was to use the resources of the Melbourne Herald's library to put together an article on the hi story of the Melbourne Cup. Thinking my article was worth publishing , Niall gave it to Ted Madden, the editor of News-Weekly, where it duly appeared, without my by-line. I remember well the heading, 'Prom Archer to Hiraji: 87 Years of Melbourne Cups' . It was a proud moment for a tledgling writer. A few of my other articles were published while I was still at school in journals like New YOlllh , the organ of the Young Christian Workers movement. They were mostly on sporting events like the Stawell Gift and the 1948 Olympic Games . In my Matriculation year the Jesuits' Professional Men's Sodality published my pious award-winning poem, ' Sacristan of my Soul' . I also wrote from time to time for several Catholic publications , including the Monslrance, the Messenger oflhe Sacred Hearl, the Advoca/e, the 7i-ibllne , the English Calholic Worker and the American HOll1iielic and Pasloral Review. Eight Advocate Years (1961-69) Late in 1961 , soon after completing nine years of study in Rome and returning to Melbourne, I was a ppointed Associate Editor of the Advocale by Archbishop Mannix. This meant filling a position previously held with distinction for over twenty years by the hi storian- sociolog ist Father James Murtagh, author of Auslralia: lhe Calholic Chapler. It was Mannix's practice to name a senior Irish priest as Editor of the paper, in a kind of watchdog role, leaving most of the editing work to the younger priest, who worked in cooperation with lay staff. During my eig ht years as Associate Editor, the titular Editor was Father Denis Murphy, an elderly and semi-invalid parish priest, who spent little time in the Advocale's office and no time at all helping to produce or write anything, except a rare brief book notice, for the weekly issues of the paper. His main personal concern was to ensure that we retained a page of Irish news, supplied every week by a correspondent in Dublin. My main colleague and mentor was a former seminarian with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, Frank Murphy, who had learned journalism on the job at the Advocale and became a good friend to me during some difficult years. He was a fine sub-editor and writer, specialising in the reviewing of opera, ballet and theatre while producing well-balanced editorials, book reviews and occasional feature articles. He was the author of an admired biography of Daniel Mannix. The only other full-time journali sts on the staff were John McLean, a roundsman for diocesan and parish news, and, for a time, Bert De Luca, a competent sub-editor and former schoolmate of mine at St Patrick's College, East Melbourne. Among the other regular contributors to the paper in those years were the prolific commentator on national and international affairs and editorial writer, Denys Jackson, and the psychologist and teacher, Ronald Conway, who wrote film reviews and who, after my time, became the paper 's most provocative columnist. Conway was later to win renown as an articulate media commentator and as the author of books like The Land of lhe LOSI Weekend, The Creal AlISlralian SltIpor and hi s autobiography, COl/way's Way. The veteran writer Hugh Buggy covered sport every week and also assisted in reporting events like the openings of new schools and churches. Several women, led by the one who wrote for many years as Catherine Kaye, submitted regular columns. And we published many book reviews and literary articles sent to us from Brisbane by Martin Haley, a renow ned man of letters. 8 From News Weekly to the catholic Weekly During my years at the Advocate I served under three Archbishops of Melbourne - Daniel Mannix, Justin Simonds and James Knox. From the beginning I had seen it as my main task in those years to bring information to our readers about the Second Vatican Council and its follow-up. Having been in Rome when Pope John XXIII announced his decision in January 1959 to convene a General Council and during the first two years when the event was being planned , I had returned to Australia full of youthful enthusiasm for what was about to happen. During the Council's first three-month session , in 1962, the Catholic press did its best to report on the event , while finding that information from Vatican so urces was less than adequate. While the general media carried stories about controversies erupting in the Council hall , these were largely ignored or down-played by those officially responsible for news di ssemination. This was to change before the second session in 1963 , as far as the English-speaking world was concerned , after the publication of books about the events of 1962 by the likes of 71me magazine's Robert Kaiser, a former Jesuit, and the Redemptorist priest Francis Xavier Murphy, hiding hi s identity under the pseudonym Xavier Rynne. Faced by the fact that information could no longer be suppressed or heavily censored, the Vatican authorities did not stand in the way of a decision by the United States bishops to organise. inform. ative daily briefing gatherings, led by panels of experts, at the remammg sessIOns. At the annual convention in Hobart early in 1963 of the Catholic Press Association of Australi a and New Zealand, Archbishop Guilford Young gave us a much more detailed account of what had happened at the Council's first session than the official sources had provided. He exhorted us to have a presence in Rome for the second session later that year. As a consequence, I was asked by four of the weekly papers - the Advocate, the 7i'ibune, the SOlllhem Cross and the Stal/dard - to go to Rome as a priest-journalist to cover the session , from September to December 1963 . It was the experience of a life-time. I was present in the Council hall on a number of days. That was memorable , but I soon found that attendance at media briefings and lectures by leading Council members and theological advisers, together with the chance to have discussions with other accredited reporters, was more useful to a young cleri cal journalist still wearing an L-plate than listening to a series of ten-minute Latin speeches. Although Archbishop Simonds was to offer me the chance to return to Rome to report on the Council's final two annual sessions, in 1964 and 1965 , my advice to him, which he accepted, was to let me cover what was happening from the Advocate's office, now that 1 had contacts with and access to several enlightening sources - some in the UK and the US A and others in Italy, France, Germany and the Netherland s. These sources supplemented the reasonably comprehensive information supplied by airmailed bulletins from the Ameri can Bishops' own news service.     Launch of Mannix Library’s Special Collections Room by Kerrie Burn AFALIA (DCP) Library Manager, Mannix Library, Catholic Theological College, University of Divinity On Friday 15th February 2019, a gathering was held in Mannix Library (http://www.mannix.org.au/) in East Melbourne to celebrate the launch of the library’s new Special Collections Room. The well-attended event was also an opportunity for library staff to demonstrate the library’s newly installed ElarScan A2 scanner, as well as a new website, created to showcase the library’s Archbishop Goold Special Collection. For the past two years, Mannix Library staff have been involved with a project funded by the Australian Research Council titled A Baroque Archbishop in Colonial Australia: James Alipius Goold, 1812-1886. Goold was Melbourne’s first Catholic Archbishop and made a significant contribution to colonial Melbourne, amassing significant collections of artworks and books, and commissioning the construction of St Patrick’s Cathedral. The archives of the Irish Jesuit Mission to Australia, 1865-1931 One hundred and fifty years ago, two Irish Jesuits arrived in Melbourne, Australia at the invitation of James Alipius Goold, bishop of Melbourne. For the next hundred years, Irish Jesuits worked mainly as missionaries, and educators in the urban communities of eastern Australia. This article will seek to explore the work of this mission from 1865 until the creation of Australia as a Vice-Province in 1931, as told through the archival prism of the documents and photographs held at the Irish Jesuit Archives. Background to Irish Jesuit Archives In 1540, Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Ignatius, with his secretary, Fr Juan Polanco SJ, wrote in the Jesuit Constitutions in 1558, that ‘precise instructions were given to all Jesuits on the missions to write to their superiors at home, and to those in Rome, for the dual purpose of information and inspiration.’ From this moment onwards, the Jesuits, have been acutely aware to the value of documents. ‘God has blessed the Society with an incomparable fund of documents which allow us to contemplate clearly our origins, our fundamental charism.’ Father General Pedro Arrupe SJ, 1976 A history of Irish Jesuits in Australia (1865-1931) The Irish were not the first Jesuits in Australia. In the last few weeks, after my return from Mexico, our Sunday "Angelus" meetings have been inspired more than once by subjects supplied by the recent journey, and, in particular, by the Conference of the Latin-American Episcopate at Puebla.2. Today, on the other hand, I wish to speak about Rome. I remember vividly my first meeting with the Eternal City. It happened in the late autumn of 1946, when I came here for further study after priestly ordination.     B. A. Santamaria: 'A True Believer'? Brian Costar and Paul Strangio* By revisiting the existing scholarship deeding with Santamaria's career and legacy, as well as his own writings, this article explores the apparent tension between the standard historical view that Santamaria attempted to impose an essentially 'alien philosophy' on the Labor Party, and the proposition articulated upon his death that he moved in a similar ideological orbit to the traditions of the Australian labour movement. It concludes that, while there were occasional points of ideological intersection between Santamaria and Australian laborism, his inability to transcend the particular religious imperatives which underpinned his thought and action rendered'him incompatible with that movement. It is equally misleading to locate him in the Catholic tradition. Instead, the key to unlocking his motives and behaviour was that he was a Catholic anti-Modernist opposed not only to materialist atheism but also to religious and political liberalism. It is in this sense that he was 'alien'both to labor ism, the majorityofthe Australian Catholic laity and much of the clergy. It is now over six years since Bartholomew Augustine 'Bob' Santamaria died on Ash Wednesday 25 February 1998—enough time to allow for measured assessments of his legacy. This article begins by examining the initial reaction to his death, especially the eagerness of many typically associated with the political Left in Australia rushing to grant Santamaria a kind of posthumous pardon. Absolving him of his political sins may have been one thing; more surprising was the readiness to ideologically embrace the late Santamaria. The suggestion came from some quarters, and received tacit acceptance in others, that he had moved in a similar ideological orbit to the traditions of the Australian labour movement Such a notion sits awkwardly with the standard historical view that Santamaria had attempted to impose an essentially 'alien philosophy* on the Labor Party, thus explaining why his impact on labour politics proved so combustible.

It examines the background and factors leading to the Fourth Plenary Council of Australia and New Zealand held in Sydney in September 1937, which brought all the particular churches of both nations for the second time. Part 2 will appear in the Winter edition of The Swag. After the Australian Plenary Council in 1905, only four particular (provincial and plenary) councils were convened in the English-speaking mission territories under the jurisdiction of the Sacred Congregation de Propaganda Fide (‘Propaganda’): the Provincial Councils of Tuam and Cashel in Ireland held in 1907, the Provincial Council of Melbourne in 1907, and the 4th Plenary Council of Australia and New Zealand in 1937. Developments in church governance, 1905-1937 Fewer councils were held in the English-speaking mission territories in this period as Pope Pius X (1903-1914) had announced in his 1908 Constitution Sapienti Consilio that the hierarchies of Great Britain, Canada, and the United States were ‘established’ and the churches there were no longer considered ‘mission territories’. Australia and New Zealand, however, were to remain mission territories under the jurisdiction of Propaganda.1 In 1911, Cardinal Patrick Moran died, and was succeeded by his coadjutor, Archbishop Michael Kelly (1911-40). Moran had convened three plenary councils in 1885, 1895 and 1905, been Australia’s most powerful Catholic prelate, and for 27 years had functioned as the Holy See’s de facto apostolic delegate for Australia and New Zealand.

He was appointed the sixth Archbishop of Melbourne by Pope Paul VI, succeeding Cardinal Knox on the 1 July 1974. He resigned from the position in 1996 for health reasons. He is predeceased by his parents Gerald and Kathleen (nee McCormack) and his brother Jack and is survived by his brother Gerald. He was a passionate supporter of the Essendon Football Club. Melbourne’s Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart said today that the death of Archbishop Little will be felt deeply by many people in Melbourne. “Archbishop Little will be fondly remembered as a dedicated caring leader of the Church for 22 years,” Archbishop Hart said today. “His sincere pastoral style and concern for his people was admired by all who met him.” Archbishop Little was born in Werribee on 30 November 1925. He entered Corpus Christi College, then at Werribee, in 1943 to begin studies for the priesthood. In 1947, he continued his studies at Propaganda Fide College, Rome, and was ordained to the priesthood in the chapel of the College on 3 October 1950, by Cardinal Fumasoni Biondi. For the next three years he pursued his doctoral studies through the Urban University in Rome and was awarded his doctorate in 1953. On his return to Melbourne in 1953 he was appointed as assistant priest to Carlton, then assistant at St Patrick's Cathedral in 1955.

    KL Pell, Hart were leaders in addressing child sex abuse Gerard Henderson Published: June 4, 2013 - 12:14PM Cardinal George Pell in Sydney and Archbishop Denis Hart in Melbourne have become public targets for criticism concerning sexual abuse by priests and brothers within the Catholic Church in Australia. The evidence suggests that paedophiles have been active in religious and secular institutions and elsewhere over the years, particularly between the 1950s and the 1980s. The situation within the Catholic Church has been particularly serious. During their recent appearances before the Victorian parliamentary inq uiry into child abuse, Pell and Hart were subjected to hectoring by some parliamentarians, along with occasional demonstrations and generally hostile media coverage, particularly on the ABC and in The Age . Yet it appears they were among the first Catholic leaders in the world to address the issue in a serious way. A lot of the commentary on this issue has been replete with an ignorance as to how the Catholic Church operates by those who should know better. For example, on ABC1's News Breakfast last week Way ne Chamley of Broken Rites said the Church "runs on anarchy". It doesn't. Last July, the Four Corners program ''Unholy Silence'', by Geoff Thompson and Mary Ann Jolley, failed to make the point that Pell is not responsible for archdioceses or dioceses othe r than his own. Each bishop reports direct to the Pope in what is an authoritarian structure. More seriously, Four Corners refused to run Pell's comment to this effect, either in the program itself or in the extended interview which is on the Four Corners website.
